Put him in a cell with Richard Simmons and Oprah he will kill himself soon enough. Sorry, that falls under the 'cruel and unusual' exclusions.

"Sounds like a nice, clean, painless death to me."
I have heard of that too. I am not sure why no one wants to do it that way. I guess it takes to long? Carbon dioxide is painless too, just fall asleep and die of oxygen starvation.

And note, please, that this is hanging in the original usage, where the executed strangle to death. Slowly. Not the quick, merciful snap of a broken neck used in the West.

I agree. It would take me a few minutes to figure out how it works.
And being a Sig man, I'd prefer this

I guess it takes too long? Nope. Unconsciousness in seconds, without pain. Three minutes to brain death. The guy recovered from the tank and resuscitated suffered, if memory serves, no lasting ill effects at all.

The key here--requiring medical personnel would outlaw lethal injection by fiat, as the AMA forbids its members from actively participating in capital punishment.
That may be the case, but not all physicians are AMA members. I never have been. It's quite liberal. However, state medical boards may also take adverse actions against physicians that participate in executions. That's probably the greater concern.

Since I tend to be a little overweight myself, I always wondered if there was a way to play the FAT CARD.

I know but the body takes quite a bit longer to die permanently via oxygen deprivation. The last thing they want is a brain dead body suddenly gasping for air while they are cleaning up.
They could always go to lunch for a couple of hours before recovering the body. That ought to be long enough.

Yeah, and trying to get the fat bastard to drink himself to death doesn't seem to be working either.

A few years back there was an overweight man who argued they couldn't hang him because his excessive weight would cause him to be beheaded if he was strung up. I'm not sure what ever happened in the case....

I keep suggesting to my legislators in Maryland that they pass a law specifying that in the event any execution is challenged on the ground that the honored guest might suffer unduly, the means of excution shall automatically be changed to the guillotine. After all, Dr. Guillotine gave his fine invention to humanity specifically to avoid suffering at the moment of death. It provides both instantaneous death and instantaneous cessation of all nervous function (i.e., pain).
I never get any replies to these letters.
