Think of old congealed motor oil with lots of salt.

Actually I love it on hot buttered toast spread real thin.

The signature block doesn't really apply to vegemite.

Definitely ban SPAM! In all forms. And those awful cousins, Viennese sausages which come in tiny tin cans. They are pure lard as far as I'm concerned.

"Oh boy - way to antagonise one of your closest allies, people."

Perhaps they should be understanding as we are regarding the anti-USA demonstrations staged in their nation. Perhaps they should take care not to antagonize (with a "z") us, person.

LOL! Great adjectives there.

An acquaintance in Australia sent me some a few years ago, but I later found we could by it at the Albertson's Grocery. I thought it tasted like beef bouillon cubes that had gotten soggy because someone left the lid off the jar.

It's pretty silly for the government to ban something that no native born American will eat in the first place! Funny how you'll eat something that you were brought up with that other people will say "would choke a maggot!" For me, gefilte fish is wonderful. According to my "goyshe" friends, it's something they don't want to look at, let alone touch or eat!

If you're not born into it, you have to develop a taste for it, or just avoid it, and Vegemite is one of those things.

The US banning another terrific food - I know that I once resorted to "Black Market Jelly Babies" when I was "into" Dr. Who.

"Vegemite" is a spread, sort of like peanut butter, that is made from yeast, and LOTS of salt. Really, really a huge amount of salt. It's practically inedible. Truly foul. But for some reason, the Aussies seem to like it.

My personal theory is that it comes from Austrailia originally being a prison colony, and vegemite was a part of the punishment. The prisoners were fed it every day, and it became a staple for them. That and the old saying, "what doesn't kill me makes me stronger."

That's my theory, and I'm sticking to it.

it is homecoming, there are 8 kids going to dinner at the country club and then to the dance at the school. It is a Catholic all boys HS, he and his friends each asked a girl from their catholic elementary school [from which they just graduated in 8th grade this past May] to the dance. we have known the people involved forever. xshub and another dad are doing the pick up from the dance and taking them home. it should be fine, but i did have some anxiety about it. xshub reported that when he and xsboy picked the young lady up at her home, xsboy went to the door to get her and then sat in the front seat of the SUV with his dad, leaving her to sit behind them. i roared! he is SOOOOO not ready for primetime!

I'm shocked! You mean that when you eat tiny little critters that consume sugars and produce CO2 you get "the vapors?" Who knew?!?!

Hmmm.... They seem to have left off the final, and most important sentances...

Following months of laboratory tests, Dr. Cyril P Callister, who became the nation’s leading food technologist of the 1920s and 30s developed a tasty spreadable paste. It came in a two ounce (57g) amber glass jar capped with a Phoenix seal with the label "Pure Vegetable Extract. The problem was Dr. Callister was murdered before he could record the formula, and it was lost forever. So Kraft released Vegamite instead, which was originally designed as an industrial spackle."

Yet another example of the government making criminals out of us... Just a week or two ago, it seems I broke state, and quite possibly federal drug laws by bumming a few Cold Formula Advils off of a co-worker, due to the chance that I might start up a meth lab with them!

I think this is an urban legend. Someone was trying to spread this (no pun intended) on another website, and claimed that his Vegemite order was cancelled, and that he should contact the "FDA (Federal Department of Agriculture)," which is obviously wrong (FDA is Food and Drug Administration, part of HHS; Agriculture is USDA).

Shhhhhh!

Don't let them connect Vegemite and Marmite as one and the same. I just bought a large jar of Marmite and Bovril along with Oxo cubes this morning at the British Import Store, maybe I should pick up some more on my next trip into town, just in case.

Check if it contains folate - that seems to be the issue. It's added to Vegemite - maybe it isn't added to Marmite.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Kraft starts manufacturing a folate free Vegemite for export after this - the amount in it is absolutely tiny.

IMO, you take a bottle of soy sauce, and reduce it to a paste.

Been a while, but I had some in a restaurant "jelly" style package.

Made by Kraft, btw.

Oh, and it can be used as a thermal paste for mating heat sinks and cpus, although when it dries out, it loses some effectiveness.

Bloody silly!

Personally I can't stand the stuff. The only Aussie food I dislike more is custard apples (no, that's not a desert made with custard and apples, it's a non-apple fruit, which, for those of us who carry the gene that causes us to experience phenylthoicarbamide as really vile tasting, should come with a barf warning).

Of course there are plenty of Aussie foods that are wonderful, mostly deserts: pavolova, huge merangues smothered in whipped cream and passion-fruit pulp, ANZAC biscuits, and the ubiquitous 'bars', whether lemon, almond, chocolate, . . . though the streotypical 'shrimp on the barbie' and steak and salad are up there, too.

Still, the Aussies are our good mates in the GWOT, and Vegemite is an Aussie staple--I think you have to have grown up with the stuff. (I know Aussies who feel the same way about peanut butter that I do about Vegemite.) This ruling has to be rescinded!

Marmite.

Ingredients:
Yeast Extract,
Salt,
Vegetable Extract,
Niacin,
Spice Extracts,
Thiamin,
Riboflavin,
Folic Acid,
B12.

Nothing about folate.

The map is delightful. Do you have one for bag/sack/polk as well?

But what does it have to do with the thread.

Incidentally, this confirms my long-held contention that culturally the midwest begins in Western PA.

Interesting. I just discovered what marmite/vegamite is today on BBC America. A brewery owner was explaining that it is made from the "squidgey stuff" that is left in the bottom of the vat after brewing. If that doesn't sound yummy, I don't know what does. LOL!

My son's "romantic" goodnight to his first date last year: "Thanks, g'night, had a good time" [spoken looking back over his shoulder, at the girl and her mom, as he walked out of her house] ;-)

I don't recall having any real interest in dating until I was about 17 or so, and it didn't kick in with a vengeance until I was 19-going-on-20. You probably don't have to really start worrying for a while yet. :-)

Now in 8 years or so when my girls start dating, you can give me some advice. (I have plenty of gun-cleaning supplies laid in already. ;-))
