"in instilling self-esteem"

As a right, rather than something that is earned.

Jay Leno had a funny observation about the abrupt end to the game of tag.

Imagine the self esteem of the poor b*stard that was the last one tagged "IT".

HE/SHE must go thru the rest of their lives being "IT".

When my boys were in school, they had the usual 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons on play day. By the time my daughter was in school, they were put in groups of 10 kids on play day and every event had 10 ribbons, 1st through 10th place. I remember thinking this is giving the kids the wrong message, the real world doesn't give you a ribbon for being in 10th place. We all need to learn to deal with the fact that some people are better suited to certain events.

As a right (self-esteem), rather than something that is earned.

Couldn't agree more.

Had the opportunity to talk with my 12 year old daughters 6th grade class the other day....I stressed the importance of setting goals and working hard to achieve them. I told them that life is competition, be prepared to be tested every day....prepare yourself to take advantage of the opportunities that cross the paths you travel in life...there is very little truth in saying someone is lucky, if you look at it closely you will see they were ready when opportunity presented itself...

However, the one point I really tried to put in their minds was that they shouldn't fear failing when challenging themeselves....to fail, and than to overcome, builds character, confidence and self esteem....

Rather conservative principles.....but you are correct....it is earned through dedication and perseverance....it certainly is not a right....
