Police are appealing for calm after four men were beaten up in a mosque last night.
Two men were arrested on suspicion of racial assault after police were called to the Eccles Mosque on Liverpool Road in Salford, Greater Manchester, shortly before 9.30pm following a report of an attack inside the building.
One man was taken to Hope Hospital but has since been discharged. The other three men were only slightly hurt and did not need hospital treatment.
A 37-year-old man from Eccles and a 19-year-old man from Davyhulme, Trafford, were arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated Section 37 assault and racially aggravated Section 49 assault.
Chief Inspector Geoff Wessell, of Salford CID, said: "Greater Manchester Police take crimes of this nature extremely seriously and a thorough investigation is currently under way.
"I would appeal to members of the local community in and around Eccles to remain calm, behave responsibly and let police deal with the incident and those responsible for it."
An Islamic youth organisation, based in Manchester, blamed politicians for the attack tonight and said the local community was "extremely fearful" they were not even safe inside a mosque.
Mohammed Shafiq, from the Ramadhan Foundation, said: "This is another example of Muslims being attacked and persecuted - and the responsiblity lies with the politicians who have been on a feeding frenzy attacking Muslims and giving ammunition to thugs' hatred towards us.
"The responsibility for this lies with the likes of Jack Straw, Phil Woolas and others who believe it's open season on Muslims.
Mr Shafiq said Muslims in the area were scared.
"We used to see attacks on the street but now we're seeing them in the mosques - people even go into a holy place and attack us.
"People are extremely fearful now, especially the elderly people.
"People think they might be attacked on the way to the mosque or even inside while they're praying."
Mr Shafiq said he has urged local Muslims not to respond to the attacks and tried to reassure them.
"The police are dealing with the situation and that should be enough for us."
He added: "So far it does not look like an organised campaign. The police have told me that no pattern of attacks has emerged and I have told people that."
Phil Woolas, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, dismissed claims that his controversial contribution to the debate about Muslim veils had fuelled the religious tensions behind the mosque attack.
The Government's race minister said: "Any such attacks are appalling.
"But I don't accept politicians' comments are to blame for this. That would imply there haven't been attacks before which, of course, there have been."
Last weekend the minister said Yorkshire teacher Aishah Azmi's refusal to remove her veil in class meant she could not "do her job", and insisted that barring men from working with her would amount to "sexual discrimination".
The leader of Salford City Council said the council would be liaising with local police to ensure Muslims felt supported.
Labour councillor John Merry said: "I am very concerned to hear about these attacks.
"Eccles is a settled community where, thankfully, incidents like these are very rare.
"We'll be working closely with Greater Manchester Police to see if there is more support we can offer people in that area."
"We used to see attacks on the street but now we're seeing them in the mosques "
Of course, the general population is now afraid of attacks on buses, but that's different.
It's sad when hooligans wind up serving as a society's immune system when the police won't.
Leftists apparently have a difficult time understanding that Islam isn't a race.
You're right, kinoxi. An attack inside the building??? I smell a setup.
Not safe in a mosque? For heaven's sake, those things are arsenals!
Muslims are a race now. Yes, a personal attack is bad on Muslims, but so was 7/7.
Now why don't the libs say: "They should ask themselves why this is happening"?
"They should ask themselves why the world hates them."
Hooligans schmooligans at least someone has some sense.
Don't be surprised that vigilantism increases when the laws aren't equally enforced.
So the muslimes are a race now????
"Mr Shafiq said Muslims in the area were scared."
Should this make me feel sorry for someone? Because right now it's not happening...
I smell a setup too. I note that the jihadis had a ready-made villain in the MPs. This was a very convenient attack.
Lol, exactly! Good point. I wouldn't bet any money that we'll hear the MSM make those points..
I may be slightly surprised but I certainly won't be dissapointed!
Vigilantism is virtually always the response to the break down of legitimate law and order. When Muslims are essentially impugn for any act, obviously somebody out there is going to want to make up the difference and take up the club out of a feeling that Muslims are being let off the hook by regular authority.
"it's open season on Muslims"
I can't believe this was written during hunting season.
On that thought, if they have to do any internal physical discipline on one of their own, they can turn around and blame the natives and kill two birds with one stone!
These are the same asswipes that riot over cartoons and 14th century quotes right? They blow each other up and saw peoples heads off right? I guess they have no balls if they can't even defend themselves in their own church. Bwhahahahaha
Officer, that infidel hit me back!
Interesting that I did not see any type of ID for the perps. No names, no ethnicities, etc.
Finally a beginning.
I can't wait to see what happens when the UK soccer thugs / hooligans finally get it.
Didn't I read that Allah, or one of the other head rag head nut jobs, said that "soccer" was not good?
Oh, man... that's, uh... Brilliant!
Wasn't there a similar incident inside a mosque in Scotland?
This is a shame. Next thing you know, these folks might be "terrorized". It is wrong to target people for simply being in a mosque. That said, somebody must step up and reform the Islamic "faith" from within. For if they fail to do so, it will get reformed from the outside. With extreme insensitivity and prejudice.
HA HA HA, good one......
Soccer fans in charge.
So are the Muslims arrested when they riot in the streets and burn buildings?
Yup, here it is.
This is standard procedure under British law. I actually respect this. It prevents retaliation against family, friends and associates. Once upon a time our common laws adhered to the same standards. Innocence until proven guilt. No guilt by association. No corruption of blood.
But hey, knock yourself out.
A "government race minister"?? Sheesh, don't let the scumbag Democrats find out about that. Give 'em ideas.
Apparently, the British aren't French.
Howmany Muslims have been arrested and charged with racial assault when they beat up a Brit.
Oh, yoohoo, Britain -- Islam is NOT a race. Maybe these guys should get a parade.
It is so true -- vigilantiism happens when governments do nothing.
holy? HOLY? HOLY?
You're 100% right. I just posted another thread: Residents Flee As Islamic Militia Prepares To Recapture Somali Town whose title could just as easily have been Residents Flee As Islamic Militia Prepares To Recapture Des Moines.
It could happen folks. And it will happen. Soon. If democrats aren't stopped. Okay, hollywood, who cares? But Des Moines? Who among us is willing to stand by doing nothing while that unfolds before our eyes? Not me.
LOL! Who would get that post, Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton?
I agree, AmishDude. These guys are nothing if not masters of propaganda and agitprop. The press releases were already written and ready to go.
Two guys beating up four muzzies???
I hope the truth comes out.
Reminds me of all the bogus koran flushing that goes on...
Sounds like a saavy lawyer could have some fun with that....
