Harris: Despite polls, I'll win
Bradenton Herald ^ | Saturday, October 21, 2006 | STACEY EIDSON

Posted on 10/22/2006 10:17:36 PM PDT by Maelstorm

WINTER HAVEN - With less than three weeks remaining before the general election, Katherine Harris said Friday that she will be elected Florida's next U.S. senator despite a new poll showing she is trailing incumbent Bill Nelson by a wide margin.

She also used her platform, a State Farm Insurance candidate forum, to promise the insurance workers in attendance that she would help get the state's rising insurance costs under control.

"Everywhere we go we hear about the homeowners insurance crisis," Harris said.

But the Longboat Key congresswoman said her opponent has ignored the issue until this campaign season.

"Clearly there is so much to be done," Harris said. "And for five years, different industry groups went to Bill Nelson and said, 'You are insurance commissioner. Please help us in Washington, D.C.' And for five years, nothing."

Harris, who trails Nelson 57 percent to 31 percent in the latest Mason-Dixon Polling & Research poll, is campaigning on her plans to address the insurance issue.

"In Washington, D.C., we can help lower those homeowner insurance rates through a national catastrophic fund that I co-sponsored," Harris said.

Harris dismissed reports that she is more than 20 points behind in the polls.

"All the liberal media is going to say, 'Oh, she doesn't have a chance.' But they've said it every time," Harris said. "In each one of my races I ran against the Democratic incumbent, down 30 points, and won."

Harris said she's again determined to prove the media wrong.

"I am never going to be one of the good ole' boys," Harris said. "But I can promise you I am going to be the people of Florida's senator."

Harris said she wanted to change the perception of the senate.

"Unfortunately we sometimes call the senate the graveyard of good ideas," she said. "We have to fight hard to make sure that won't continue to happen."

Harris also pledged to cut taxes, reduce wasteful government spending and secure the nation's borders.

"We believe that the most important role we have is to protect you," she said. "We need to make sure that we secure the borders - that we have a labor force, but not create this massive entry of new citizens that actually have more rights and privileges than you or I do."

Harris said the 12 million illegal immigrants currently in the country could potentially bankrupt the Social Security system and compete with legal citizens trying to attend public universities.

"Their children will come to our universities at state-resident rates, competing with our kids, and disenfranchise students from 49 other states," she said. "Ladies and gentlemen, we really have to hold the line."

The congresswoman recently co-sponsored a bill called the Secure Fence Act, which proposed constructing more than 700 miles of reinforced fencing, with cameras, ground sensors and surveillance equipment along the nation's borders.

I think Katherine has a chance. Here is a revised idea for an ad based on comments from Freepers.

Sorry, the music is horrible.

Also, too busy.... what are the TOP 2 or 3 issues.

I oppose drilling in ANWR but is that a top issue?
what I got out of it was ...
Nelson is:
* Higher taxes
* pro abortion

what about the patriot act? oppose that?

Thanks for the comments.

Sorry about the music but it was free. I'll see if I can find something better.

Well you are right on that. Nelson opposed the Patriot Act once and then voted for it. He is generally a typical liberal on most issues. Just not overly outspoken which is probably how he has survived for so long in his district.

Thanks for your input.

I think she can win it. After looking closely at Nelson's record it really looks like all is necessary is hitting him over and over again on his voting record.

I BELIEVE KATHERINE HARRIS CAN WIN !

I have already stated reasons why, on countless postings I have made in this forum, since early this year .

In 1948, everybody was certain that Dewey would beat Truman in the Presidential Race - the opinion polls and bookies and even the Nuke York Press thought he was a sure win .

IT DID NOT HAPPEN !

The odds are and always have been, clearly in Nelson's favor -
so no one sure be suprised if Katherine does not succede .

Chances are, the GOP will lose big this year as well .

I presume this is people living in areas with no hurricane threat paying for a large part of the insurance of those that do with tax money, as usual.

Man the money gets given away in those cases regardless. At least with such funds it caps the bleeding somewhat in those events. I don't understand why the federal government needs to intervene as much as it does. People seem more than willing to give charitably in those events.

Your comments demonstrate that you haven't a clue about Katherine Harris. Instead, you choose to believe the ridiculous hit stories in the MSM. Furthermore, your need to be on the record with descriptions of Harris as "delusional" and "self-important" on the day the polls open indicate support for the liberal candidate. Shame on you.

That why campaigns run TV ads, so that they can get their message out. Congresswoman Harris' campaign has spent over $7 million so far, but for some reason has yet to run any TV ads.

I used to think that Congresswoman Harris believed that she was going to win, but I now seriously doubt that. This spring she said that she was going to donate $10 million to her campaign. So far she has only given about a third of that. I think that speaks volumes about what she thinks about her chances.

Nelson has his own voter machine independent of the national party.

There are many old people who will vote for nelso because he is PERCIEVED AS an OLD school democrat.

Nelson does not need a party to win.

Harris has only herself to blame for running an lousy campaign. She lost too much time looking to the national party.
