In this television ad, Rep. Rick Renzi attacks Democratic challenger Ellen Simon, tying her to a case the American Civil Liberties Union litigated and saying support for her is lacking within her own party. A similar radio ad is also running.
THE SCRIPT
"Over 100 Democratic elected officials are opposing Democrat trial lawyer Ellen Simon. Liberal Ellen Simon served as the president of the ACLU, a radical organization that defends hard-core criminals at the man/boy love association (North American Man/Boy Love Association), a national group that preys on our children. One Democratic mayor called Simon's actions 'utterly disgusting.' He's right. Ellen Simon: radical, liberal and wrong for Arizona."
ON THE SCREEN
Text: "Over 100 Democratic Elected Officials are opposing..." Simon's image appears, the text "Democrat Ellen Simon" appears. The words "LIBERAL," and "Served as the President of the ACLU," appear along with the words "Radical Organization defends hard core criminals Man/Boy Love Association." News headline reads "ACLU Defends Child Molester Group." Text reads "Preys on our children." More text reads "One Democratic mayor called Simon's actions 'utterly disgusting.'" Text reads: "He's right." Text reads: "Ellen Simon: radical, liberal, wrong for Arizona." Renzi approves ad.
ACCURACY
Renzi's campaign released a list of more than 100 Democrats holding office that it says have endorsed Renzi over Simon, including 55 Navajo Nation Council delegates. Due to time constraints, the Daily Sun did not independently verify whether each of these politicians had endorsed Renzi.
Ellen Simon served as chairwoman of the Cleveland chapter of the ACLU, a volunteer position and once litigated a civil case regarding an AIDS patient for the group as an attorney, her campaign confirmed.
She was never president of the entire ACLU, a national organization.
The ACLU defended a man who'd already been convicted of the murder of a 10-year-old boy when the boy's family sued the North American Man/Boy Love Association for wrongful death.
The family was suing NAMBLA over material posted on that group's Web site, linking the Web site led to the murder. ACLU took the case as a First Amendment issue.
As chair of the Cleveland ACLU group, Simon didn't have anything to do with the NAMBLA case, the ACLU has said.
The Democratic mayor referred to in this campaign is Ron Green, of Safford. Green is also backing Republican U.S. Jon Kyl for re-election, according to Kyl's campaign.
As to the liberal and radical assertions, Simon hasn't been a politician, so her opinions can't be measured by a voting record.
Here's where she stands on a few issues, according to her responses in a recent Daily Sun survey.
She supports: keeping abortion legal, increased border security, capital punishment, stem cell research, physician-assisted suicide, requiring handgun owners to obtain permits, raising the minimum wage and health care for all.
She opposes: a constitutional amendment banning flag-burning, prosecuting minors charged with violent crimes as adults, using tax-supported vouchers to send children to private or religious schools and making illegal immigrants felons.
Arizona Daily Sun pimping for a far-left Dhimmi lover of pederasts. No surprise here.
She sounds like a real doozie.
