What the Heck Is Jim Caveziel Saying in That Video? [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

The Corner can end all suspense and officially confirm that in the commericial airing in St. Louis tonight Jim Caveziel says in Aramaic, "You betray me with a kiss." (Which is what a few readers, including one Aramaic student told The Corner last night.) As one source working to defeat Amendment 2 in Missouri explains (and if you've read Yuval Levin, our editorial, or any of my pieces on the issue you know this already): "It refers to the promises made on page one of the amendment that are betrayed on page 5. On page one Amendment 2 promises to ban human cloning and this is betrayed on page 5 where human cloning is enshrined in the Missouri constitution."

And again, I'm more interested in the 'right vs. wrong' aspect of this issue, while you are equating it all to 'who has the best mouthpiece'.

Hiring a 'decent' lawyer (isn't that an oxymoron?) doesn't even begin to address the moral issue(s) of the Shiavo case. But I guess that's a difference of opinion between myself and people like you, that I've been made fully aware of (and thanking God FOR).

If it ever gets to the point where I am agreeing with you and/or other people that think like you, I will no doubt be having to give thanks to another entity other than God. I pray that day never comes. And for your sake, you should do the same.

Next time get the family to hire a decent lawyer rather than one provided by pro choice groups that were more interested in their agenda than they were in winning the case. Republican OVER reaching in that case is a major reason why their poll numbers have gone down the drain. The family availed themselves of the best legal system in the world, they just hired incompetent counsel who was more interested in making news than saving the client.

I just want to point out that I can't be too angry at Fox. He made an ad in 2004 for a republican. I don't think his issue is based upon party its based upon his feelings about stem cell research. I don't have Parkinson's, don't know anyone that does and I can't say what I would do if I did. But I can't be angry at him for being a "liberal" when I didn't get angry at him for doing the same exact thing for a republican.

Don't get me wrong. I'm tickled to death that Fox made these ads for the DemocRATS. By doing so, he made Rush Limbaugh the number one target of the leftist MSM with only 12 days left to go. Rush isn't even running for anything. LOL! I love it!

yes but my point was that it becomes a bit hypocritical to go after someone like Rush did. Had he done the same thing in 2004, then it wouldn't be an issue. And one thing I do know is that being ON the medication is what makes you shake like that when you have Parkinson's. When you are OFF of it, you become almost catatonic and can not move at all.

The support is dropping like a rock. I was surprised too, but Missouri is a state wherein most support life. Medicine is big there, esp. in St. Louis area, which may account for much of the support. Once the truth gets out however, this monstrosity is doomed.

It is a shame the game was rained out this evening. Hopefully there will be additional runs of the ad. God bless these men and this woman for using their influence for the benefit of those with no voice!

Yesterday on Fox and Friends Sean Hannity said that Michael J Fox admitted to NOT taking his meds prior to making the ad so that his tic would be worse.

I can agree with this, yet what is the alternative? If these embryos are being made in fertlility clinics and then not implanted in the woman, there is no way to regulate that they be donated to science. So, what is the answer?

Earlier this year, Talent WITHDREW his support for a Senate bill that would ban all embryonic stem cell research and impose a million-dollar fine and jail sentence on violators.

Supporters of the state referendum deny that assertion, noting the language of the proposed constitutional amendment explicitly bans human cloning.

But Amendment 2 is identified for many Missouri voters by the language at the beginning of the five-page, 2,000-word ballot initiative: "No person may clone or attempt to clone a human being." That explains why polls have shown a substantial margin of support for the constitutional amendment, also backed by key Republican politicians and business interests. It seems to offer the best of all worlds: government support of stem cell research without fear of cloning.

The problem is that the proposal so narrowly defines cloning as to open the door in Missouri to any cloning procedure that takes place outside the womb.

Talent at that time was taking no position on Amendment 2, but he has since come out against it. In a recent debate with the Democratic Senate candidate, state Auditor Claire McCaskill, on NBC's "Meet the Press," Talent said the proposal "would create ... an unqualified constitutional right to clone the earliest stages of human life. " But he hastened to add he is not against stem cell research.

Amendment 2 bans only cloning that involves planting an embryo within the womb. It specifically prohibits government from interfering with somatic cell nuclear transfer, which involves replacing the nucleus of a human egg outside the womb -- the cloning procedure used to produce Dolly the sheep.

Unequivocally, the proposal tries to keep politicians from interfering with its approved cloning process:

"[N]o state or local government body or official shall eliminate, reduce, deny or withhold any public funds provided or eligible to be provided to a person that lawfully conducts stem cell research or provides stem cell therapies and cures."
