My Interview With Michael J. Fox
CBS ^ | 10/26/2006 | Katie Couric

Posted on 10/26/2006 3:24:32 PM PDT by dave k

I’ve interviewed Michael J. Fox several times before – but never quite like this.

After all the controversy and publicity and debate about his political ad, and the criticism he got from people like Rush Limbaugh, he really is in the eye of a political storm right now. But when he came to our studio for our exclusive interview, he was remarkably calm. He was also obviously symptomatic. He trembled uncontrollably, and his legs shook, but he explained it was actually a side effect of not taking enough medication. He told me he reduced his dosage because he didn’t want to have dyskinesia, which is the side effect of too much medication, and which causes the swaying back and forth that was so evident in the controversial ad for Missouri Democratic Senate candidate Claire McCaskill. Fox said that he can never tell from one day to the next how serious his symptoms will be. It’s a crapshoot.

High recent dose is walking through mud. Low late dose is uncontrollable dancing. According to my mom that's about to die with (not of) Parkinson's.

It annoys me that no one will explain to the American public that the real progress is being made with adult stem cell research and that all indications are that embryonic stem cell research is causing tumors in animal testing. The other point they conveniently leave out is that it is perfectly legal, just not being funded by the federal government.

Nobody has attacked his illness. We've attacked the way he represents it and the way he uses it to deceive.

I've seen the previews of this "interview". Fox flops around like a break dancer, just like he did in the ad. IMHO, he's exaggerating to get sympathy. I've seen people in the final stages of his disease, and they shook, but they didn't put on a show like Fox. Then again, they weren't making RAT commercials.

Do you think it is wrong to lie in the commercial?

But according to the MSM, to question a liberal is to attack them.

What part was he lying about? He wasn't lying about his illness....he was MISREPRESENTING all the other stuff and that's the stuff we should be calling him on...not the effects of his illness.

Not only that, he was not challenged about the fact he was supporting a phony non-cloning amendment to our state constitution. This really isn't about stem cells, it's about the sneaky way this was put on the ballot, and the fact that if it passes there will be absolutely no legislative oversight for these procedures. Cloning will be legalized and enshrined in the constitution even though the wording of the legislation leads the average person to believe otherwise.

It is goulish to think we are on the verge of creating human life, then killing it in the name of helping people.

I don't think anyone is down playing the horrors of Parkinson's. And I don't think anyone is denying MJF's right to take or not take his medications.

However, I have heard people question the honesty with which he portrayed Parkinson's disease. That is fair. There were so many falsehood and deceptions in the ads, that you can end up questioning everything about the ad, even MJF's own condition.

From everything I have read, and the little I know about Parkinson's, MJF was honestly depicting life with Parkinson's. But you can't fault people for questioning, since it appears to be the only honest representation in the entire ad.

We can now add Michael J. Fox to the list.

You forgot to mention "the children," the environment, and endangered species.

That's what we're doing. He is, in fact, LYING about the records of certain legislators regarding stem cell research and he's being called out on that as well.

Have you seen the commercial? You are the one that said he did NOTHING WRONG. I have been calling him on his lies, as has Rush. You are falling for the spin of the MSM media, who wants to make him the victim.

If you are interested in dealing with the text of the commercial, what Michael J. Fox says that people like Claire McCaskill support stem cell research and Jim Talent wants to criminalize it. He says that what we do in Missouri effects people like him.

What he says is the commercial is an utter falsehood.

Fox said that he can never tell from one day to the next how serious his symptoms will be. It’s a crapshoot.

Yet he was still able to appear on Boston Legal...

Okay, I'm gonna say this one more time- We don't have a problem with his symptoms, we have a problem with the way he USED HIS SYMPTOMS TO DECEIVE.

You put yourself out into the mix of politics you cannot expect to walk away unscathed. I now have absolutely no respect for Fox. He is unworthy of respect, he is unworthy of pity. There are people out in this world who have it alot worse than he does. Poor sick Michael J. Fox...blah, blah, blah.

Here's what I have for you now Michael....

Right, he said that too much medication made him twitch.

Managing meds is a continual balancing act with Parkinson's. At Fox's stage of the disease (18 or more years in) taking a larger dose of Sinemet probably causes twitches and head bobbing. Taking less means that he may freeze in place and have other symptoms including falls, difficulty swallowing, and difficulty talking.

I dislike these misleading ads but many of the comments on these threads about Fox's condition are gratuitous and contrary to fact.
