Oct. 27 - A historic change may take place in Washington on election night -- Democrats may take control of the House of Representatives. If it happens, San Francisco's Nancy Pelosi could become one of the most powerful people in the country. ABC7's Mark Matthews sat down with her today.
No other woman has ever held the job of Speaker of the House. But if Democrats win just 15 of the 50 Republican seats that are in contention, Nancy Pelosi could find herself third in line to the White House.
Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is maybe just a few days away from becoming speaker of the House. A possibility she says she doesn't dwell on.
Nancy Pelosi: "If the election were today, I think we would win, but it's not today."
As minority leader she's spent much of her career vigorously attacking the president and his administration. A pair of boxing gloves hang on her office wall. Her tenacity and force have served her in uniting House Democrats. I asked her if as speaker she'd need to shift gears to a kinder gentler Nancy Pelosi.
Nancy Pelosi: "Well I'm kind and gentle, I'm also truthful and that people sometimes have a problem with, and I'm sorry for them."
She says her goal is civility defined by fairness allowing the minority party to have a voice. Something she says that has been lacking in the Republican controlled House.
Nancy Pelosi: "We know the abuse of our democratic system that Republicans have exacted, and we know it isn't right and we wouldn't do it to them."
Former Republican congressman Tom Campbell served in the House on the other side of the aisle from Nancy Pelosi. He says Pelosi should take note of what happened to another strong fighter Republican Newt Gingrich.
Tom Campbell: "In order to take over in 1994 he was an attacker. And it was very difficult to move towards the model of now let's work together productively. The question is can the leader of the revolution be the one who then immediately makes the peace. In political systems it's very rare."
In the case of Newt Gengrich, his own party removed him in favor of the more conciliatory Dennis Hastert.
Today, Nancy Pelosi is still minority leader and still on the attack.
Nancy Pelosi: "The Republicans will not be constrained by money, by truth or by any sense of decency."
Nancy Pelosi is of course keeping a close eye on the congressional races. She says out of 50 Republican seats that are not considered competitive, in 33 of them the Democratic challenger is ahead in the polls.

Nancy Pelosi was back home in San Francisco Friday to vote and to campaign.
CBS 5 sat down with her to talk about a variety of issues, including one where she agrees with Vice President Dick Cheney.
Pelosi hopes to make the current polls come true, to make democrats a majority in Congress and her the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Some of extreme elements in her party are so angry with President Bush, they want him out.
But Pelosi won't talk of impeachment. "Not going to impeach the president, it's just simply not going to happen," she said. "Impeachment takes away the time we need to build the future."
Much of that anger at the president comes from the difficulties in Iraq.
Pelosi said going to Iraq was a mistake in the first place and the troops should get out.
Moreover, she says it was better to leave Iraq as it was before the invasion.
"I think it was a mistake to go in the first place," Pelosi said. "Not only do I think it was a mistake, I think it was a historic blunder, a grotesque mistake and our presence there has been a failure in terms of keeping us safer and making our military more formidable and bringing stability to the region."
Vice President Dick Cheney is no darling of the left either.
He's in the cross hairs again, this time for his statements that dunking people in water is acceptable to get terrorists to talk and save American lives.
"Whatever the vice president said, any use of degrading and inhumane treatment of somebody that we have detained in violation of the Geneva Conventions doesn't make us safer, because the intelligence gathered is usually not very reliable and it endangers our own people, should they be picked up and subjected to the same inhumanity," Pelosi said.
Same-sex marriage looks to be a hot issue in this the mid-term elections, but Pelosi doesn't think it's her job to do anything about it.
"The vice president has said this is a state issue and I agree with him, it is."
She also addressed the interesting phenomenon of the polls showing Democrats ahead in Washington but behind in California.
"The election isn't today, it's 11 days away and we don't' know what can happen in 11 days," Pelosi said. "In 11 days we can increase our lead, in 11 days Phil Angelides can come closer to winning the Governorship, so I haven't given up on that race at all."
Pelosi won't talk about her party's chances of winning the presidency in 2008.
"Not even going to go there. I don't see past 11 days," she said. "After that it's another story but this is about November 2006. I don't even give a thought to what happens after that much less to an election that's two years away."

You know that list the Dixie Chicks were complaining about? Who has it? I need to add someone to it...
Which is why the Dems will not gain control in either house.
Thats nice for your grandchildren... I am also sorry for the people that find you truthful.
There was another news snip tonight that had her almost seemingly salivating over the possibility of winning at least the House and being able to "make" the President a lame duck..
It's a pretty sick state of affairs when those who swore oaths to the Constitution and then seek to rip it to shreds for their own purposes and to fulfill their own misguided agendas.
She represents the worst side of human nature, a dark side that knows no bounds and will stoop to any level, solely for the sake of the acquisition of power.
Hey, do you think she is HUMAN, Norm?
LOL
I think she was hatched and probably has no navel, but would not want to be the one to check. As far as I am concerned she lays eggs, and rides a broom , just like Hillery.
The news snip I saw tonight made her skin look like ya could bounce a coin off her face and it would go flying off into space,, tight tight tight,, I guess I should go easy on Grandma Pelosi, she is 66 after all.
as to human,, I sure don't want to be the one selected to check for the navel, that's for sure. . ;-)
.....and don't lose 15 of the ones they already hold...right Murtha?
Pelosi has spoken publicly of supporting impeachment in the past.
"She also addressed the interesting phenomenon of the polls showing Democrats ahead in Washington but behind in California."...Not phenomenon--Taxpaying Californian's are tired of having their Democratic led state turned into a welfare state.

Step One Reminder of What a Real Woman Looks Like:
Pelosi is truly, as you say, an ugly manifestation of hatred for Republicans and anyone who is a True Patriot of our nation, and I would guess she has been somehow hatched, rather than born to anyone warm blooded.
Step Two, Pelosi Real Appearance Photo:
What's the difference between Osama bin Ladin and Nancy Pelosi? Osama bin Ladin went into hiding AFTER he did bad things.
