| WASHINGTON, Nov. 1, 2006 -- The Hawaii National Guard is planning to airlift supplies to isolated residents on Maui as soon as their needs are ascertained, a military official said from the states capital today.
Local authorities are compiling supply needs lists from Maui residents, Hawaii National Guard spokesman Maj. Chuck Anthony said from Honolulu during a phone interview with American Forces Press Service.
Items requested by Maui residents will likely range from fuel needed to power generators to food and other necessities, he said.
A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Hawaiian Islands Oct. 15. No deaths were reported. Besides some broken bones, no one was seriously injured, Anthony reported.
Damage among the islands varied, Anthony said, noting the earthquake damaged some roads and bridges on Maui. Electric power was off on the island of Oahu, where Honolulu is located, for 12 hours after the quake ended.
Once residents needs are ascertained, National Guard CH-47 Chinook helicopters will be used to ferry the supplies from Oahu to Maui, Anthony said. The airlift could start by Nov. 5, he said.

The road to Hana is narrow winding with a lot of old, small single lane bridges.

Sea supply would work too.

The hotels are fine and the power was quickly restored. The roads have been cleared......BTW all this on the same day as the quake, except for Honolulu, which had a power grid cascade event.
You'll be just fine. Enjoy your vacation!

I'm on vacation right now just 2 miles north of Lahaina on the coast.
This article is a surprise to me and my fellow vacationers from Maryland.
We've seen nothing here that is a problem due to the earth quake. I haven't checked the paper each day but no one has even mentioned to earth quake to us. It's a non-event here as far as we can tell.
We drove 1/2 to Hana today and drove back without incident.
We went to Lahaina last evening to celebrate Halloween (great town-size party) and the earthquake had no ill effect on anything. Lahaina is a great place to celebrate HAlloween. Thousand and thousands get into costume and party up.
Everything is fine here.

Thanks for the picture. Brings back fond memories of my stay at Hana, way back when. As I recall the wild guava on the road added even more excitement to the tiht curves. But the helicopter run to Haleakala was the best.
