Vermont poised to elect America's first socialist senator
Gurdian ^ | November 2, 2006

Amid the furious debate over Iraq and the speculation that George Bush may be a lame duck after next Tuesday's mid-term elections, an extraordinary political milestone is approaching: a cantankerous 65-year-old called Bernie looks set to become the first socialist senator in US history.

Bernie Sanders is so far ahead in the contest for Vermont's vacant seat for the US Senate that it seems only sudden illness or accident could derail his rendezvous with destiny, after eight terms as the state's only congressman. His success flies in the face of all the conventional wisdom about American politics.

He is an unapologetic socialist and proud of it. Even his admirers admit that he lacks social skills, and he tends to speak in tirades. Yet that has not stopped him winning eight consecutive elections to the US House of Representatives.

"Twenty years ago when people here thought about socialism they were thinking about the Soviet Union, about Albania," Mr Sanders told the Guardian in a telephone interview from the campaign trail. "Now they think about Scandinavia. In Vermont people understand I'm talking about democratic socialism."

"...the first socialist senator in US history."

Too late by many years.

Bernie Sanders is honest. He says what Democrats really think but are too chicken to tell the American people.

What the people of Vermont fail to realize is that Bernie has accomplished absolutely none of the things he's been promising them for 18 years. But he sure talks a good game

Yeah Vermont is the People's Republic. He was the state's only congressman for 8 terms. The Green Mountain State is right up there next to Massachusetts for the loons they send up to Congress.

Bernie sold himself to the poor in Vermont by promising them everything they wanted (but he has yet to deliver). Couple that with the full support he gets from Vermont's aging hippie population and he can't lose an election in that state

The author would be incorrect, a number of admitted socialist candidates have been elected to the U.S. Senate. No person has won for the U.S. Senate running on the Socialist Party ticket itself, and that fact won't change with Sanders election, since the Socialist Party doesn't have ballot access in Vermont. Sanders is running as an "independant"

Incidentially, two people did managed to get elected to Congress on the Socialist Party ticket.

The other half of Vermont's Senate team is Patrick "Depends" Leahy. As a state, Vermont has become a hopeless Massachusetts of the North.

Sorry, there are many, many socialists in there already...to our abject shame.

He is just more in your face about it...but their actions speak just as loudly in my ears as his words.

Socialists like him are just pure de marxists by any other name, and are not in the least interested in or committed to the values and principles upon which our Republic is founded.

Well, I certainly don't like Bernie Sanders, and don't intend to vote for him next week, but even though he's a deluded socialist he's relatively honest and decent.

He's a hundred percent better than Leaky Leahy, the Democrat.

So the Free State Project has started?

It's been off and running in Vermont for 30 years. Bernie's followers were only able to win an occasional State office, but their partners in the Democrat party have pretty much controlled state government.

No, the REALLY sad thing is that a Republican congress and Republican president had a chance to eliminate the tax deduction for state and local taxes -- a huge federal tax subsidy to big spending blue state governments.

See, the people of VT don't have to live with the financial consequences of their actions and their philosophy and the federal tax code makes it possible.

Not really, that I saw. And now, with Vermont's civil unions, the only way they can is through adoption.

The other problem is that the poor in Vermont are not raising large families like they used to when farming was the lifestyle. And the young they do have leave the state for better jobs.

Taxes are going to send Vermont to the graveyard. They drove me out

VERMOUNT POISED TO ELECT AMERICA'S FIRST SOCIALIST SENATOR

That is the most hilarious headline I've seen in a long time.

America has been electing filthy, goosestepping, socialist Marxist senators since at least 1910.

How the hell do you think America got direct election of senators, the female vote, the income tax and prohibition.

It wasn't with senators opposed to socialism.

Honesty.

The abuse of the word 'liberal' (which really belongs to us advocates of liberty and free markets) by American socialists is a travesty. Sanders calls himself what he is, rather than trying to pass himself off as something else like the 'rats are always doing.
