Upset in Michigan?
The Allen Report ^ | 11/2/06 | Mike Allen

Posted on 11/02/2006 11:03:32 AM PST by impeachedrapist

Republicans hope that will be one of MANY surprises on election night. They need them. With lots of struggling candidates, the National Republican Senatorial Committee is throwing a $900,000, buzzer-beating lifeline to the Wolverine State and Mike Bouchard, a sheriff who has been running an intense campaign against incumbent Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D), though with little national attention because of her lead in polls and fundraising.

"Mike CAN win with the right resources and that's why we are coming in," says NRSC Communications Director Brian Nick. "He's running on the fact that the economy is the worst in the country and that Stabenow is ineffective. It's resonating, big time." The new ads started yesterday. The committee had previously given Bouchard $1.2 million.

[snip]

Confident Democrats are making a similar play in Arizona. Sen. Charles Schumer of New York, chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, is holding a briefing for reporters today to discuss what the announcement calls the "expanding Senate playing field." He's talking about the Grand Canyon State, where the Democratic challenger, shopping mall developer Jim Pederson, has not appeared to pose much of a threat to incumbent Sen. Jon Kyl (R). But the DSCC is releasing a polling memo showing Pederson running strong among early voters. The memo concludes that the race "is closer than it seems to be." DSCC Communications Director Phil Singer says: "Pederson's cash resources have enabled him to keep the race at single digits as he has mounted a three-pronged attack focusing on Iraq, Kyl's failure to achieve results after 20 years in the Senate, and ties to special interests."

In other Senate races, two Republicans fighting to stay in the game are both up with ads acknowledging public frustration with Iraq...

How the hell is that a "similar play". They're citing some internal memo, but they're not claiming to give this guy any more money or support. This is delusional blather to keep their faithful happy.

Any race in which the Dem upsets a Republican lock will constitue incontrovertible evidence of a "Blue Tidal Wave" of disgust with the criminal Bush enterprise.

Any race in which a Republican upsets a Dem lock will constitute incontrovertible evidence of voting machine fraud.

Hugh Hewitt had on Bouchard yesterday and he refered to him as the next Senator from MI, I am not so sure. Anyone from the Devos/Bouchard teams here that have some internals that can give us some hope.

It's ridiculous that MI would re-elect a governor and a senator with such absurdly bad records.

Yet, that appears to be what's happening.

This could be turning into an interesting race -- I've felt for some time that Michigan could be a GOP upset in the making (see my post #25 on the thread below).

That shouldn't be such a big surprise. When a state's economy goes down the sh!tter, its most productive residents are usually the first to leave. Over time, the citizenry becomes dominated by losers, social misfits, and recent immigrants (both legal and illegal). It's hard for conservatives to win elections when a disproportionate number of voters are losers, social misfits, and recent immigrants.

Polipundit just reposted some info I saw last month that convinced me that Brouchard had a great chance of picking up this seat:

In the 2000 General Election (Michigan Statewide) Stabenow defeated Abraham by only 67,232 votes. At the same time, farther down the ballot in Oakland County, Bouchard received 83,161 more votes than Stabenow countywide.

AC, have you ever lived in MI?

It is not an optimistic place to be at the moment, I am living it, we are fine, but it is hard to keep a stiff upper lip with the whole state going to pot.

The mentalities of many will not allow them to pull the "R" lever. Sorry, just the way I see it.

"The mentalities of many will not allow them to pull the "R" lever. Sorry, just the way I see it."

No, it won't.
Nor will mentalities ever allow the Dems to change back to something tolerable.
What is happening in Connecticut, where the Independent, Lieberman, is clobbering both other candidates, is indicative of what COULD happen. There are more Indepedents than either Republicans or Dems, and plenty of moderate people who will never vote for a Republican because of the "R" WOULD vote for an Independent.

Unfortunately, you are correct. I overheard a discussion yesterday about how Jenny and the state would be much better off if the whole state gov't were dems - basically, it's the fault of the right-wingers that are holding her back from bringing back our glory days. Of course, they also believed that stopping the stupid wars overseas would make billions of government aid available to our state again. Everything they said could be easily refuted, but most people here have been guzzling the kool-aid all their lives, and are immune to facts and reason.

I have to admit that it's going to get worse in MI. On the other hand, it will get worse no matter who is elected, until, at least, they are willing to reel in the labor unions.

Exactly! I keep asking where they are doing the "polling" that we all keep hearing about? It can't be West Michigan-it has to be Southeast Michigan. I believe it is an effort to discourage republican voters from voting and swaying the undecided toward making their vote supposedly count.

state's ongoing malaise

Yep, and for the record, we are losing more jobs to others states than we are other countries.

Sure, market globalization has taken it's toll just like any other state but we cannot compete because of high taxes, and high taxes, unions, etc.

Did I mention taxes?  Especially on the business side.  Were taxed like crazy to support K-12, then all cash that goes in to the universities just so the graduates can leave and go to another state for employment.  Great concept, eh?

And don't forget the big cities - they're dyed-in-the-wool lazy libs who vote to protect their socialist gubmint handouts.

It is not a coincidence that Detroit is not only the most dangerous city in the modern world, it is also the fattest.  Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Ann Arbor to name a few are the few idiots in the class that ruin it for everyone else.

Until all the retired unionheads die off or lose their pensions I'm afraid we're just going to be outnumbered by a few percent, just enough to swing an election.

The liberal enclaves are pretty cut and dried, you know when you are headed into one and that makes them easy to avoid.

Senator Stabenow is the world's most prominent white, heterosexual obese woman.* That such a fat woman should have gained office in the first place is an aberration, and so it stands to reason that Michigan voters will rectify their mistake.

*Not counting women (e.g. Kristie Allen) who became prominent before they became fat.

I think DeVos has a good shot because I don't think Detroit is going to come out to vote. Granholm endorsed Mayor Kilpatrick's opponent in the last Detroit mayoral election. This is a union-dominated state, but if Detroit doesn't come out, the Democrat has no chance (ala Blanchard 1990). Posthumus almost beat Granholm the last time, and he ran out of money with a week to go. DeVos will not run out of money.

"It's ridiculous that MI would re-elect a governor and a senator with such absurdly bad records.

Yet, that appears to be what's happening."

It's the women voters, stupid(sorry not really cally ya stupid, just paraphrasing a demo line from '92)!

I call it "woman's non-replacement of broken car" syndrome.
The car keeps breaking down, she keeps taking it to the shop to get it fixed in the hopes that THIS TIME, IT WON'T BREAK!

That's the way many women vote, things are bad but maybe if they vote again for the same people who are promising for a better economy thru increased taxes and socialist spending, THIS TIME FOR SURE, THINGS WILL GET BETTER!

The dirty shame is that many women don't trust the men of this country to support them and their children's needs; they want a stronger force to compel men to be responsible by means of confiscatory taxes. They don't trust churches or the men in them to come through for them if they are widowed and penniless. The government according to their thinking, while imperfect, is the safty net of last resort and they are prone to suggestions of the great goodies that will be extracted from men and greedy coperations if only the "right sort" persons were in charge.

As I've looked over the broad thrust of how the Dem's are conducting their campaigns, their themes are strongly emotive and seemingly not based in strong intellectual facts...Casey for example seems to gain more by "hiding" his views. In short, the Dems, even the men, are campaigning as though they were women...and guess what; its working...even amongst many formerly security minded conservative women.

They are cleverly stoking that strong streak of passive aggressiveness that women are prone to resort to when they feel threatened or frustrated when they feel they are not being "listened too"(ie agreed with).

My wife has picked up on this..."Well folks just want change...". I asked..."change to what"? She couldn't answer that, neither could many of the other women I work with. They all want "CHANGE", and will roll their eyes condescendingly..."oh you are just a man and just don't understand". Most men I've talked could name goals and specifics and other non emotional, non sexy issues surrounding this campaign. We are losing ground because the Dem's have cornered the market of "vagueness" of ideas and have made "vagueness" sexy.

Just imagine the government and benefits you want and peace in the world and the Dem's will supply it for you...just dream it, and make a wish when pulling the lever for the Dem's and it shall all come true! We won't make your eyes glaze over with the details as to how we are destroying your freedoms as we implement your new dream world

That is the Dem's message...and the fact is a great many women from all walks, including many Republican women have bought into it! (they just won't tell their husbands about it...they might get mad)

MI has been a slowly sinking ship since foreign autos started their inroads in the 1970s. The old rule was never buy a car built on Monday as the workers were still hungover from the weekend. Oh, and management came up with "planned obsolescence" whereby your car fell apart after a few years and you would have to buy a new one.

Although I left the state in the 70s and never seriously looked back, I half shed a tear when I think about all of the squandered talent and manufacturing capacity.

It's a long shot but we're gonna fight to the end!!!
But the fact is Detroit usually decides all state wide issues and as long as they consitantly get more votes for dems then there are registered voters in Detroit it's gonna be uphill all the way.

If you want to see how crazy Detroit is go to the Detroit Free Press website on the home page right hand side banner advertisements for Wyoming Jobs!!! and still the Free Press endorsed the Dems!! hope whoever leaves last remembers to turn out the lights :(

For instance local Detroit story because of the terrible public schools and the Teacher's Unions annual delaying of the start of school by going on strike the Detroit Local School System lost 14000!! yes you read that right 14 thousand students this year alone... and the Union is up in arms they laid of 70 teachers!! Now do the math if being generous lets say 20 students per class they should have laid off ten times as many!! another story not long ago... a anonymous auto plant manager says he has to plan for a daily absentee rate of 20% because of the lousy workers the unions cover for!
