University of Pennsylvania president Amy Gutmann threw her annual Halloween costume party at her home Tuesday night. Among the guests was Saad Saadi, who came dressed as a suicide bomber, complete with plastic dynamite strapped to his chest and a toy automatic rifle. Worse, Gutmann posed with Saadi!
An obvious question: would Gutmann have posed with a guest--or even allowed him into her house--if he'd dressed as Adolf Hitler or a Nazi SS officer? A KKK member?
But in modern liberal circles, posing as a Palestinian suicide bomber (see his kefiya) is just fine. After all, he mainly tries to kill innocent Jews.

Actually, I think a better tactic than expressing outrage would be to express gratitude that political correctness is on the wane and that truly scary costumes are now permitted at Penn Halloween parties, and tell President Gutman that we're looking forward to seeing her posing with faux Hitlers, ersatz SS, and students dressed as aborted foetuses next year.
Incidentally, I get dibs on the tactics on this one. I'm a Penn alum. (Grad A&S '84, Ph.D. in Math). Remember folks, sarcasm, biting sarcasm, not outrage.

Some fraternity members at Johns Hopkins University thought it would be fun to have a "Halloween in the Hood' themed party last weekend. Part of their decorations was an effigy in a noose. The University's reaction was the exact opposite to what happened in Penn. These kids will probably be on probation for the rest of their studies at Hopkins.
This witch should be fired immediately.

I am glad to see that my old graduate alma mater has not become so politically correct that offensive Halloween costumes have become a matter for disciplinary action against students. Under your predecessors from the days when I was a grad student at Penn in the early '80's up through the 'water buffalo' incident, I had very much feared that Penn was heading in that direction.
Saad Saadi's suicide bomber get-up was truly disturbing and gruesome in the best tradition of the great American costume party. I trust next year we will be treated to more of the same, perhaps you'll pose with a faux Hitler or an ersatz Grand Dragon?
I suspect you'll get a lot of outraged e-mails and letters since Saadi's party pix had made it into the blogosphere.
When it happens, take the advice of the old fight song, and drink a highball: you'll feel better.

Sarcasm and riducule, folks. Not outrage. Like I say, I've got dibs on the tactics here. I'm a Penn alum, wrote for the first issue of the conservative alternative paper there back in the early '80's when I was a grad student. (Worked on the first Reagan campaign while I was there, too.)
Making them out to be ridiculous will work a lot better. (Besides, it's more fun.)
