GOP may keep Senate seat in Rhode Island
McClatchy Washington Bureau ^ | November 5, 2006 | Ron Hutcheson

If Sen. Lincoln Chafee wins re-election in Rhode Island on Tuesday - and a new McClatchy Newspapers-MSNBC poll indicates he might - it will be because he is one of the most rebellious Republicans in Congress.

Although Chafee had been trailing Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse in previous polls, the latest McClatchy poll showed him with 46 percent support, compared to 45 percent for Whitehouse. About 9 percent of voters remained undecided.

While Chafee's slim lead was within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points, it was the first indication in weeks that he might survive the anti-Bush mood in his state. The poll of 625 Rhode Island residents was conducted Oct. 31 to Nov. 2.

Do you have some good news? Talent, Steele or Allen pulling ahead? Santorum rebounding?

While Chafee is really a RINO, we need his seat so just grin and bear it as hard as it may be.

LOL its a crying shame. I hope we keep a big enough margin so he can't pull a Jeffords on us.

AS pissed off as I figure to be on Wednesday morning, Chaffee winning will only make it worse.

I can't shake the feeling that he might pull a Jim Jeffords. Maybe because he's publicly toyed with the idea of switching parties. If he wins, I'd put him in the ? column until further notice.

He will cross the aisle if he finds himself as the tie breaker or in the minority.

So, Chafee has taken a 46% to 45% lead. His attacks on Sheldon Whitehouse's tolerance of corruption are working.

Are you saying that it would be a good thing for Sheldon Whitehouse to be in the Senate?

Undecided voters seldom come down on the incumbent side. While this is better news than last week, it still favors the Dim.

It is a bad thing for either of them to be in the Senate.

I'm a big "vote for the RINO" guy, but Chaffee has gone too far. I hope he loses.

Seriously, I think it should be in Washington D.C. inside the capitol building.

I don't know what will happen in RI. I suspect RI's political gravity would pull Whitehouse over the finish line. Just as I think VA's political gravity would pull Allen over the top.

I think Chafee will win, considering that he does well on the actual elections rather than the polls. Polls showed him losing to Laffey but he won the primary quite strongly.

Chafee is and will always be a RINO, but considering the fact that Liddy Dole, Karl Rove and Ken Mehlman have pumped millions into his campaign I doubt he'd ever switch. He'd rather be a thorn in our side in the same mold as Snowe, Collins, DeWine, Graham and McCain (probably without DeWine after 11/7).

Chafee will probably cross to the Dems.

The question is...who is a worse Dems....Chafee or Whitehouse?

My guess is Whitehouse.
