Excellent if true. Does MD have a lot of early voting/absentee voting? Or have most people still not voted yet?
To: 7thson
Black ministers endorsing a republican? This election is a strange one.

More information please. There have already been important black democrats endorsing Michael Steele. Is this a new set of endorsements?

I missed him on Fox but Rush played a great clip. It sounds like he hammered the Washington Post who did 2 editorials on him supposedly saying he brought nothing to the table but the color of his skin. Amazing.

He said in an interview on FOX that the Post would have to write the headline on tuesday saying Steele wins and he could tell them to eat it.
To: 7thson
It's a violation of the tax law for a minister to endorse a candidate... Unless you're black, of course. Or maybe it's unless you're Democrat.

lol. Steeles honeymoon will be the shortest in history if he manages to win.
The cries of uncle tom will be fast and furious when he votes to nominate a conservative SC judge.

Does MD have a lot of early voting/absentee voting? Or have most people still not voted yet? Ehrlich has been pushing for absentee voting among the base, though I as a rule don't vote absentee if I'm going to be in town. If there is early voting, I haven't heard of it.

It is not a violation of law for a minister to endorse a candidate. He has the same 1st amendment rights as anyone. It is against the law for them to do so from the pulpit of his tax exempt church. Step outside the building and he can campaign all he wants.

They weren't in a church. As individuals who happen to be religious leaders, there's no restriction on who they endorse, campaign for, or donate to.

Yep, both he and Allen got endorsements from local african-american clergy yestday/today.
The Allen endorsement cited gay marrage, and the Steele endorsement was just all around.

Two factors playing into this other than just race. The white Dem candidate beat up on a black opponent in the primary and also is tied to the Baltimore City machine. Lot of rivalry between the DC suburbs and Baltimore.

Steele's big endorsements last week were local african-american community leaders and politco's.
Heck even Mfume's son was out with Steele last night campaigning!
Anyway, this endorsement is from the religious community, and it is different.

Not really true. In fact, the only church ever to lose its tax exemption for a political endorsement lost it because the minister paid for a newpaper ad urging voters to vote against Bill Clinton. The key is not whether he does it in the pulpit, but rather whether he identifies himself as the minister of a church in making his endorsement. If he just says "I, John Doe, recommend Steele," and there is no reason to know that this guy is a minister, then he's OK. But if the audience is there because someone advertised that a prominent minister was going to endorse Steele, then they've got problems. It's just a question of whether the IRS will do anything about it.
To: My2Cents
Thats what Rush said. He mentioned that there would be a 2 week firestorm if he had said that about Barack Obama.

the first were the PG County politcal bigwigs. This is from the prominent clergy in PG county I think. The wave for Steele is building at a perfect time. Cardin has done nothing but diss the African American voter and thought bringing Barack to campaign for him would mkae up for the fact he is taking their vote for granted, as Dims always do. He will soon find out the 'plantation' is being taken over by those he has not respected.

ministers can endorse any candidate they want, they just can't use the church to preach that endorsement to their flock. That is why this comes on monday.

"Dem'crat" is the operative here. Black ministers who endorse Republicans are treated as harshly as if they were James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, or Pat Robertson.
Just as a matter of arithmetic: Each vote that Michael Steele wins from the black community, means it takes TWO from the Dem'crat tally. Because they not only have to neutralize the one taken from them, but they must also have to stay ahead by that additional one to win.
And they may not find that additional one.
