That's an interesting strategy, but it really only works in the Northeast. For all intents and purposes, there are a bunch of "independent" senators in New England these days -- including Chafee, Snowe, Dukakis, Jeffords, etc. Basically, the Northeast is the kind of place where the Republican Party doesn't really exist.

We voted around 6:45 this morning. Cold and rainy and the forecast looks like that will hold for the day. There were about 8 people voting at the time but more were just starting to pull in to the station when we were leaving. There are a lot of self-employed/work from home people in this area so there really is no need for people to come in early prior to heading to the office/work place.

I wouldn't use Connecticut as an example given there are no Republicans in the state. They are RINO's.

Try again - this ultra conservative Republican lives here with all of my ultra conservative voting family - and proud of it. Take a look at the county map from 2004 - I live in the ONLY red county in the state!

We voted at about 8:00. Straight Republican and "No" on all ballot questions.

Seems like a good turnout in Virginia. Radio call ins talking about it. My voting station had a good steady stream coming in and going out.

Lieberman's unique. There is no other Democrat currently on the hosizon that Republicans would vote for enmasse. Without strong Republican support that third route wouldn't work.

I'm excluding Zell because he retired.

Voted in Ohio at 7:45AM..pouring down rain...Place was packed...Good thing imho as Ohio need all the help we can get...Republicans will vote in the rain...Dems don't if history stays true. I vote about the same time for every election and was happy to see the turn out.

From a friend on another board:

"My firm in DC is a lobbying firm and obviously has quite a stake in these elections so we're going to be getting turnout updates throughout the day. (For full disclosure my firm is 90-10 Republican so there may be some noise coming in that makes it 'look better' but it's still a nice resource to have)

My thoughts on turnouts and reports at 9:20 in the morning are that it's just a way to make the waiting game go by faster.

With that said in the two states that they are following closely this morning (MD and VA) they are reporting:

Larger than normal turnout in Rep districts in VA
Larger than normal turnout in Dem districts in MD
A "steady pace but nothing earth-shattering" in Northern VA*

*This is key because obviously Northern VA is typically a Dem stronghold. Some in the office are claiming this is a sign that Democrats are not getting out in Arlington/Alexandria. Others are saying that because of the nature of the Metro system(our public transportation) no good turnout info will be available until around noon. You can take a guess as to which side is saying what. "

The Mrs. and I arrived at the polling place 5 mins before it opened. Lots of Republican volunteers there cheerfully handing out 'R' voting guides. One lone Democrat volunteer who wasn't at her post, either as we arrived, or as we left. I spotted her once, running around asking if anyone needed a Democrat voting guide. Nice old lady, if misguided.

The polling place had about 15 of us stalwart voters standing in line as it opened. As we headed back to our car, there appeared to be about 3 dozen more arriving.

I'm in the northern "Blue" part of VA, so can't say if the turnout is good or bad for Republicans.

Just watch Katie Couric this evening. If she looks as if her best friend just died, you know news is not good for DEMS.

Do you think she brought a black outfit to change into?

That`s true, but it just goes to show what makes it in politics, especially the liberal states...It`s not what they do, it`s what party they belong to and how well known they are. I mean you can whittle Hellarys accomplishments down to two things while in office; She went on a 8 month book tour and blamed Bush for every problem. That`s all this beeyatch has done, yet she is above Spencer by almost 50% in the polls, it`s incredible. Any other profession a person who has that kind of job record would have their arse kicked out in a second.

She has literally done worse than nothing, for example here in Queens New York, when she first came into office we had an electrical blackout that lasted about 2 days. She of course immediately blamed Bush, and promised while she was in office this would never happen again. Well this past summer, the first day that hit 100 degrees and everyone immediately put on their air conditioners, the power went out again. Only this time it wasn`t for 2 days, or three days or four days or five days or six days or seven days, but EIGHT full days without power! I ended up having to live with my brother that entire week, entire businesses around here lost 1000`s of bucks, people couldn`t get to work being that the subways were off, yet what happens? This bitch gets re-elected.

I was voter 172 in the A-L line in my precinct at 8:30. I asked, there are ~3200 registered voters. The 60-ish Democrat woman behind me was swapping gloats with the 70-ish Democrat man in the M-Z. I couldn't help it, I turned around and said, so you're okay with voting for a man who writes about women cutting bananas with their vaginas? She had never heard of it and looked shocked. Probably too late to change her mind though.

I have heard all kinds of praise for what Lieberman did...but, it actually makes me sick.

I also don't like his attitude...that the reason he will caucus with the Dems is to keep his "power"..his committee assignments.

Like you said...how many times is this going be done in 2 years??? Especially if nothing changes...and you get to keep committee assignments based on your membership in ONE party...
