Wilson calls for federal election monitors after ballots run out

Wilson calls for federal election monitors after ballots run out

Incumbent Republican Congresswoman Heather Wilson is calling for federal monitors from a US House committee to keep tabs on voting in New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District.

Wilson made that announcement after a heavily Republican Northeast Heights precinct with roughly 2,500 registered voters ran out of ballots within two hours of the polls opening.

Precinct 603 was supposed to receive 1,500 ballots but only had 150 on hand when voting began at 7:00 am. When ballots ran out at about 9:00 am, voters were asked to leave their names and numbers and told they would be called when new ballots arrived.

“Now they are turning away voters at the polls and denying them the right to vote,” said Wilson at a morning news conference. “These voters were not offered provisional ballots as is required by federal law. That is a violation of the federal voting rights act.”

Mike McFadden, one of those called back to vote when new ballots arrived, questioned whether there were political motives behind the ballot shortage.

“I’m just wondering if it has something to do with the election itself,” said McFadden. “[Precinct] 603 is primarily a Republican precinct.”

County Clerk Mary Herrera, a Democrat, blamed the Secretary of State’s office for the shortage of ballots saying they adjusted the number based upon early voting and absentee ballot numbers.

The Secretary of State’s office fired back blaming the county clerk for not providing enough inventory.

You can just bet that over 27K illegals voted for Madrid, canceling out the votes from New Mexicans who voted for Wilson. When they took NM back to paper ballots I knew we were in trouble. The new RAT motto should be "vote early, vote often!"

I just can't see why, when you know the voter registration, you don't send enough so that if everyone showed up, the could all vote. The 1500 ballots does not excuse this.

U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson and an attorney for the state Republican Party this morning said at least two heavily Republican precincts in the Northeast Heights received only a fraction of the paper ballots needed, a move they called a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise GOP voters.A spokesman for the Secretary of State's Office said it appeared to be a numerical error in which a zero was dropped. Two precincts that should have received 1,500 and 1,700 ballots, respectively, instead got 150 and 170."The (Bernalillo) county clerk should have checked it when they accepted the order," said Ray Baray of the Secretary...

Have a judge order the polls to stay open longer at that location. It works for democrats.

If they ran out at 9am, how long can they stay open to compensate?

So both the NM SOS and the County Clerk (in a heavy Repub district) are both democrats. Why wasn't the RNC ready for this? Not like it's the first time NM elections were questionable, is it?

Hope the voters are mad enough to come back and vote.

The state switched from machines to paper ballots this year.

The paper ballot I used this weekend s*cked.

(thought I'd add my $.02)
