Is A Speaker Pelosi A Victory for Women?
Townhall.com ^ | Nov. 8, 2006 | Carrie Lukas

...American women should be careful what they wish for. Over the next two years, they will witness some of the consequences of having liberals in charge, as Democrats push for bigger government, higher taxes, and more regulation—none of which benefit women.

Consider taxes. Democrats have derided the Bush tax cuts as solely rewarding the rich. Yet when the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire, middle class families will learn how much these tax laws have benefited them. In four years, the child tax credits will be cut in half, the marriage penalty will return, and the bottom income tax bracket will rise from ten percent to fifteen percent. Middle class families may be surprised that the Democrat’s agenda of repealing Bush’s “tax cuts for the rich” will put a serious squeeze on their family budget.

American women will also learn how higher taxes hurt the economy. Many of us don’t feel directly affected by investor tax cuts on dividends and capital gains. Yet these cuts have a significant, positive impact on the economy, and their elimination will have the opposite effect. Increased taxes on investment make capital more expensive, which makes it harder for businesses to expand and create jobs. That means slower economic growth and higher unemployment.

One of the few specific items in the Democratic agenda for 2007 is a minimum wage increase. Like most Americans who don’t look closely at the policy, many women see this as economic common sense. The reality is, like all regulations, a higher mandated wage comes with hidden costs like unemployment and higher consumer prices. Liberals portray employers as having an endless supply of money that they could give to employees were they not so coldhearted. The truth is companies forced to increase wages must find ways to

Ms. Pelosi has nothing to teach that is of any interest to me. I'm embarrassed by her duplicitousness.

Carrie's contribution to a NRO Blog:

A Tough Night for the GOP, But Probably Good for Conservatism

Last night was rough: I was definitely surprised at the extent of Democratic pickups in the House and the Senate. And there may be some real bad consquences to having Democrats in power. My greatest concerns is that the Democrats will hobble intelligence agencies and hinder the war on terror. I’m also sad to think that the Washington DC voucher program (it’s up for reauthorization next year) may be killed, which means that about 1700 low income students in the nation’s capital will likely have to leave their current schools and return to the miserable DC public school system.

That’s the bad news, but there is good news in this election too. Republicans are going to have to do some real soul searching and remember why people supported them in the first place. This means returning to first principles, like a belief in limited government, less regulation, fewer government handout programs, a transparent tax code, reformed entitlement programs, and more individual control. When I was on Fox News yesterday, I struggled to come up with any legislative victory from the past two years. It shouldn’t be that hard. Republicans in Congress really fell down on their job, beginning with their failure to engage with the President on reforming Social Security. This should have been a no brainer. It should be conservativism 101 to want to transform our broken, tax-and-spend Social Security system into one that is based on savings and investment. Not only is this good policy, but survey research increasingly shows it’s also good politics. Yet the Republican Congress balked, and proved that they were more concerned with avoiding a challenging political conversation than in doing the right thing. That has to change. Republicans need to get back to talking about their vision of an ownership society.

The Democrats didn’t win this election so much as the Republicans lost it. The country didn’t embrace a Democratic vision of government and domestic policy: they never even offered one. They put forth a few small time initiatives -- a higher minium wage and more subsidies for student loans -- but never tackled any of the big issues, like Social Security, healthcare or immigration. Many of the big pickups for the Democrats came through candidates that positioned themselves as fiscal conservatives and practically Republicans on many core issues.

Conservatives should take heart. In two years, there is another chance to reclaim Congress. By that point, not only will we we will be able to point to the vacuous Democratic agenda, hopefully, we will have committed conservatives to root for.

No, it is a victory for communists, America-haters, criminals and layabouts of every stripe, everywhere. They're dancing in the streets of Pyongyang, Havana, Tehran, Paris, and in the prisons alleyways, near the dumpsters of America. But for me, life goes on apace -- I'll just go to work and brighten my corner like I always do (and THEY never do)...

Santorum? Allen?

The Democrats, their far left allies, and the national and local media poured unprecedented amounts of money and effort into defeating these two. Why? Because they were the only two viable Conservative presidential candidates they saw with a chance to defeat Hillary in 2008. And the RNC and the administration, as is typical, didn't do nearly enough to help them.

Unfortunately for the Democrats, the law of unintended consequences in politics may come into play here...

I disagree that this will be a problem for dem-o-rats. 4 years from now will be 2 years into hildabeast's first term and the MSM will be saying how wonderful everything is.

As for our GOP.....it's a wake up call. Return to CONSERVATIVE values, or go away.

Let the RATs have this next two years to show their true colors and then we can kick them to the curb in 08.

Well the point is they lost (Allen, Santorum, etc) and it wasn't just RINOs that lost. DeWine (a RINO) was doomed because I believe he got swept away in Ohio corruption. Chafee? Well nobody could tell him from a Democrat so he probably did lose because he was a RINO. The so-called RINO purge is self-destructive and is similar to the left dumping Lieberman over one issue. There will always be the mushy-middle. If you write them off, you lose. Reagan had the advantage of a disasterous Carter. The Class of 94 had the advantage of a liberal Clinton who ran as Conservative Democrat but had obviously lied.

There is nothing positive about this election. Republicans who stayed home to punish elected officials will now have no voice in DC. We can be for all the prinicples you described but it won't matter. The Dims play dirty and they have the media on their side. We won't get control back in 2008.

Many of us don’t feel directly affected by investor tax cuts on dividends and capital gains

It would seem many don't understand the formula for higher tax rates on the "rich", higher dividends and/or capital gains. All it will result in is inflation of the prices of goods that these "increase taxes" will effect.

Example: If John Doe makes 5 million a year and his taxes goes up. That little product he sells will go up, and who pays the tax? As a matter of fact, as the price of that product goes up, so will the wages of the employees that make the product in order to at least stay with the inflation. Is that really hard to understand? And after all this, what is John Doe salary now? Now he was able to inflate the product and makes 6 million a year, pays a little more tax and comes out with 5.2 million. What a life. And the that poor dumb a@@ goes out to buy the product and found the price went up since the tax cuts went into effect. What is the total effect, the poor dumb a@@ purchasing power went nowhere. Ever hear the saying, the rich only get richer and the poor say the same or looses.

Oh, God, no. And aside from Hillary, it's hard to imagine a more shrill feminazi, with radical feminist 'values' that have failed a generation of women and will surely fail the next... But that's okay, because she'll just throw more tax dollars at the problems to make us feel all warm and fuzzy like someone really 'cares'.

Interesting. It's good to purge the Rinos, but the cost, the sanctimonious ranting, the leftie policies, ugh. Quite a cost. It does give some food for thought for 08, though.

You are exactly right, happened here in my state. The Dems were selling their wares by telling people that the republicans were selling us out to those furriners. They bought it. Yes, some RINOS were purged but good ones lost too. This loss will have significant impact because Republicans can't seem to unite anymore for their own good. I hope this ain't so, but it is a problem.
