Lieberman, Seniority Sure, Has No Plans to Join G.O.P.

Mr. Lieberman said he spoke Wednesday morning to Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic leader, and that Mr. Reid assured him that he would retain his seniority despite having bolted the party after losing its primary in August to run on his own party line.

I'm no fan of Lieberman, but his trouncing of Lamont blows away the whole "referrendum on Iraq" angle. If Iraq was such a big deal to the voters, Lamont would have coasted to victory.

Once you get away from the WOT, Lieberman is a solid liberal. He even supports partial birth abortion, almost unheard of for an Orthodox Jew.

Why so many FReepers and ceoservatives were getting excited about Lieberman is beyond me.

How's that? Lieberman said he would vote for the DemocRAT leadership. Republicans In Connecticut knew that before voting for Lieberman. As it turns out, the DemocRATS can't afford to punish Lieberman.

I don't see he duped anyone. He was straight-forward as to his position on voting. Since they were ticked at Bush and took it out on all republicans, he was a better choice given the war on terror than the Dem candidate.

What?

Nobody expected Lieberman to switch. There was no way a Republican was getting elected in that race and Joe is literally the lesser of evils.

Much of the Senate decisions will rest, in a large part, on this man's vote. He can have whatever he wants from either party.

As Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee and a crucial vote and potential coalition-builder, Lieberman may be able to play a positive role in the next two years. Not saying I like it, just that he is in a crucial position at the balance of power between the two parties.

Don't anyone jump down my throat, please, I'm not saying I like anything about the situation, except that I'd still rather have Lieberman chair the Homeland Security Committee in the Senate than any of the uber-leftists who might have been in line....

Also, while I have no use for the "Gang of 14" (now "Gang of 12"), the FACT is that some such coalition is now going to play an even more crucial role in the Senate, for the next 2 years at least, and Lieberman is going to be in the driver's seat a lot of the time..... so we'd better pay attention to what he's doing because both parties are going to depend upon his support and coalition-building for just about anything they want done in the Senate.

Yup, that's just what I was saying, Lieberman is going to be in the driver's seat on a lot of issues in the Senate. He is going to be very liberal on virtually all non-defense issues, but maybe at least he can put on the brakes when his party starts to go really crazy on leftist national security policies. With Lieberman as Chair of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, at least avoided the execrable Carl Levin as Chair (I think he would have been next in line if Lieberman had lost his seniority with the 'Rats):

http://hsgac.senate.gov/

Joseph I. Lieberman Ranking Member (D-CT)
Carl Levin (D-MI)
Daniel K. Akaka (D-HI)
Thomas R. Carper (D-DE)
Mark Dayton (D-MN)
Mark Pryor (D-AR)

Why is Lieberman's vote more magical than any of the other democrats? All it would take to swing a Senate vote in either direction is a change of any single Democratic Senator and there are Democrats in the Senate more conservative (relatively speaking)than Lieberman. A swing vote can be caused by any democrat in the Senate...particularly if the Dems in Senate leadership positions dems don't treat the newer and allegedly more socially conservative Dems well.

I must be a stubborn SOB because there is NO WAY IN HELL I'd caucus with a party who trashed me and left me beside the road, and then came crawling back pretending none of it happened. I was hoping Lieberman would stiff the Democrat leadership after the election but, alas, he's soft as we've known all along. At least we can count on him on WOT votes.

I would expect Lieberman to at least stay consistent with his pro-military stance. So having military issues be 50-50+1 instead of 49-51 is a plus, and the vote on those issues is the most we could have hoped for from Connecticut.

Yes, and at least the Homeland Security Committee under Lieberman is likely to be a whole lot more rational than what's going to happen now to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence:

http://intelligence.senate.gov/members.htm

Rockefeller will now presumably chair that committee, and look at some of the other uber-libs who will influence it more than ever now.....

Rs made a HUGE mistake (one of many) in not getting a thorough examination of the many leaks and illegalities of leftists (Plamegate and NYTimesgate, just for starters) because now the only investigations are going to be of Bush, Cheney, et al.

Since you do NOT have my husband's FR nic, I can't be your EX, for that reason and for the fact that I have been married to the same man for almost 40 years, you are not him, and I have never been divorced. :-)

Why would Lieberman go Republican if the Dems take the Senate, which I believe I read on another thread they had. It would leave him in the minority, with no shot at a committee chairmanship.

If he switched parties or, better yet, caucused with the Republicans, then they would be in the majority. He'd be in the majority either way.

The Slimes would rather have the "people's candidate" Ned "the Red" Lamont in the Senate than Lieberman.

As much as I do not agree with Loserman and some of his views on liberal social policies, the guy will stand up for what's right in the WOT and will be a crucial vote when it comes to replacing Rummy and other issues dealing with our national security.

Barring a RINO switch, he is the vote that will swing the Senate on anything related to National Security issues. The Rats have 49, the pubbies 49. That useless commie Sanders gives the Rats 50. But with Loserman on our side on Iraq, it's 50-50 and Cheney breaks the tie.

He's said all along he'd caucus with the Democrats. And I've said all along that the whole 'independent' routine wouldn't last six months before he was back in the Democrat fold, less if the Dems took power. Lieberman will be the next head of the Armed Services Committee, mark my word.
