Two Democratic congressmen who could have mounted formidable challenges to longtime Mayor Richard Daley announced Thursday that they will not run for mayor next year because of their party's new found power in Congress.
The power shift on Capitol Hill bodes well for both Reps. Jesse Jackson Jr. and Luis Gutierrez.
"More than any time since I took my initial oath of office, I am excited, eager, and downright giddy about the prospects in Washington," said Jackson, the son of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson.
"In short, Tuesday's election made for a big night, and a new day."
Jackson said he wanted to continue as a member of the House Appropriations Committee, where he can "help set and fund new priorities in the city, the state, the nation and the world."
He will be second in seniority on the House Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee.
Gutierrez is the senior Democrat on the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House Financial Services Committee, and is in line to become the subcommittee chair.
"It's really exciting to go back as a member of the majority party," Gutierrez said.
Daley has yet to announce his re-election plans, but there are signs that the Democrat will run again for the job that was long held by his father and to which he was first elected in 1989.

Have you checked the markets today?
Apparently Wall Street has realized that the Rats will control the $inate too.
Gold, silver and oil are enjoying big gains. Many of the other stock indexes are going down.
Maybe the Wall Streeters, who were pushing for gridlock are having a second look at that desire.
We sold most of our mutual funds yesterday. That was a nice daily gain and weekly gain for those we sold.
Here are some good choices to start...

Thanks, George.
We are on the road here.
We have Fidelity's Money funds which are the highest paying money funds.
Also, we buy CD's via Fidelity for no cost. I bought 40 k in 90 day cds that pay montly at 5.1%. That fits in with our current CDs, I have been buying since we got out of the bond markets about a year ago.
