NASA Sees into the Eye of a Monster Storm on Saturn (Cassini)
NASA JPL Space Science Institute ^ | November 9, 2006 | NASA News Release

Posted on 11/09/2006 8:34:10 PM PST by garjog

NASA's Cassini spacecraft has seen something never before seen on another planet -- a hurricane-like storm at Saturn's south pole with a well-developed eye, ringed by towering clouds.

The "hurricane" spans a dark area inside a thick, brighter ring of clouds. It is approximately 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles) across, or two thirds the diameter of Earth.

"It looks like a hurricane, but it doesn't behave like a hurricane," said Dr. Andrew Ingersoll, a member of Cassini's imaging team at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. "Whatever it is, we're going to focus on the eye of this storm and find out why it's there."

A movie taken by Cassini's camera over a three-hour period reveals winds around Saturn's south pole blowing clockwise at 550 kilometers (350 miles) per hour.

No kidding! I always thought 2010 was an incredibly underrated movie, even though critics bashed it. Late 80s sci-fi was meaty, thought provoking material - today everything is just explosions and gadgets no story.

Hehehehe... The Eye of Saturn!

Hey, the only difference between Saturn and Sauron is a 't' and an 'o'.

Hmmm... That's gotta mean something!?!

Are my eyes deceiving me, or do I see millions of monoliths eating Saturn ?

All these worlds are yours except Europa
Attempt no landing there.

2010 is also one of my favorite movies. 2001 a Space Odyssey did absolutely NOTHING for me; it was just too intentionally wierd. The characters and story in 2010 were more interesting, though they were pushing the anti-nuke war message pretty hard.
