WEAK-ly Standard Props Up Democrats Senatorial Candidates
The Weak-ly Standard | November 10,2006 | me

Posted on 11/10/2006 5:18:29 AM PST by colonel mosby

Congratulations to The Weak-ly Standard. The "conservative" magazine did a wonderful job promoting Democrat senatorial candidates Jim Webb, Harold Ford Jr., and Jon Tester in it's last two issues immediately preceding Tuesday's election.

The Standard wrote a long tribute to Webb, calling him a "blood and soil conservative". Despite Harold Ford Jr.'s very low ACU lifetime congressional voting record of 19, the Standard tried to portray him as being similar to his conservative opponent Bob Corker on the issues. Apparently, the magazine was enamored of the notion of having little Harold in the U.S. Senate.

But, most outrageously, the last Weak-ly Standard issue before the election had Jon Tester on it's cover, in a populist pose doing farm work, and asking in bold headlines if Mr. Tester was "The New Face Of The Democratic Party" ? The accompanying cover story on Mr. Tester was so glowing and complimentary that one would have assumed that it had been written for Time or News-weak.

Apparently, Rockefeller Republican Bill Kristol and his minions at The Weak-ly Standard are happy this week. They did everything they could to tip the balance of power in the U.S. Senate to the Democrats. I guess The Standard wants to see the next two Supreme Court justices mirror their "centrist" values.

With friends like Kristol and The Weak-ly Standard, the Republicans don't need enemies.

By the way, I cancelled my subscription to The Standard. I hope all true conservatives will do the same.

Talent lost by a really narrow margin as well which is a damned shame. This guy even voted against trigger locks he was so pro-gun. His stance on the war was impeccable. The moral of the story? People were frustrated with the national scene and we had some issues on our ballot that brought out the dems. I hear the same thing happened all over the country. We'll be back in spades after this 2 year circus. The headlines about jihadis being happy the democats won are going to be campaign ads in 18 months. Count on it.

Caveat - Dewine and Chafee had it coming. Nothing would have saved those guys.

I don't subscrie to the Standard, I just see Kristol on FNC/FNS.

George Allen and his campaign blew their chances of winning with the idiotic 'macacau' remark and then the absolutely assinine strategy of going after Jim Webb's novels.

Hugh Hewitt mentioned in a column back in the spring that George Allen would have to run a perfect campaign to beat Jim Webb. Allen didn't and he made enough missteps to lose a squeaker of a race. Otherwise it would have been a cakewalk.

Our local fiscal / pro-military conservative talk show host here in Denver, Mike Rosen on 850am KOA, also spoke very highly of Jim Webb having known him personally for over the past two decades. Mike called him a good friend.

Give the devil his due. Chuck Schumer chose Senate candidates who refused to embrace liberal ideals in their deceitful campaigns, and so-called "conservatives" in the media carried Senator Schumer's water for him.

The DNC outwitted the RNC this time, and will come back with the same tactic again in 2008.

Will we get fooled again ?

Not having read the other Standard articles in question, I can't really speak to them. However, I think you misunderstand the Standard's depiction of Webb. The term "blood and soil conservative" is a way of calling Webb a borderline Nazi. It's definitely not a compliment.

James Webb was too well-liked to go after him personally on things like his writing. And how many conservatives were turned on by attacking Webb for saying Tailhook was overblown, or that back in 1979 he opposed women in the military -- didn't most military people come slowly to women in the military?

The stuff about "horny women's dream" was OK, because it showed an ATTITUDE about women that was sexist, but unfortunately most of what we attacked Webb for was BEING A REPUBLICAN IN THE 1980s.

The Allen campaign needed to stay positive, and let outside groups do whatever attacking of Webb was needed. Problem was, once "macaca" happened, Allen lost his veneer of being a "nice guy", because he appeared to go after a kid, and called him a name.

On the other hand, I can only hope that Webb is as good a guy as so many republicans seem to think he was.

One thing this election shows is that you can't buck the american majority simply by using legislative tricks to deny them what they want. You really need to have the DEBATE, and convince them you are right.

I never heard republicans make a good pitch about why the minimum wage shouldn't be increased, instead they actually TRIED to increase it, tying it to two tax items neither of which were really related to it, showing they just wanted to bargain with it. (To his credit, Allen's support was based on changing tax codes to help small business that would be hurt by the increase).

Losing Allen really hurts, and it seems like we could have pulled it out, and we know what happened but you can't go back and change history.

Republicans should have been holding hearings, and doing oversight, for the past 6 years. They were so scared that the democrats would win the talking points that they forgot that the american people really want our government to debate and discuss things.

'What if the ticket is Clinton-Obama in 2008?'

IMHO, this is what the Dim ticket will probably be.
BTW, the media often talks about the President and his religious feelings. Has anyone heard the media ask Mr. Obama about his religon?

Charles Stenholm was a blue dog democrat and at home he would tout his conservative beliefs as in keeping with the people around here. Everyone loved Charlie. But he was beholden to the liberal leadership and when they needed his vote, they got it. When they didn't need his vote, he could look conservative. He kept up appearances and seemed to be doing good and maybe he did stick to principle but there were crucial votes where he stuck with his dem bosses. Re-districting weeded him out.

These new "conservative" dems may be just as hard to beat. It is a game of one upsmanship and the dems are very good. We need leaders that are upright and shrewd as snakes. Maybe our leaders got all puffed up and soft. Especially when the media is so biased. Reagan ruled with democrats in control. Did we learn anything? We'll see.

If al gore runs he will win the democratic nomination going away in 2008. He never voted for the Iraq Freedom mission and that will win over the blame America (and hate America) crowd that makes up the majority of today's democratic party. I also think that gore would like nothing better then to win the democratic party nomination and take out hillary at the same time as payback for clinton cheating on his wife in the oval office, thereby ruining gore's chances for an easy victory in 2000. It is a fact beyond contestation that if there were no clinton sexcapades that gore would have won in 2000 however close the results may have been.

If you look closely you will see that the Wall St. Journal also moved left. Guess those declining subscriptions were the reason for the treason.

If the media wasn't so busy deifying Barak HUSSEIN Obama, they might have spent more time on Ford. Thankfully, they didn't, he isn't and we have time to expose Osama Obama for the far far leftist he is.

Okay, need further evidence ? How about this characterization of Jim Webb, contained in the Weekly Standard pre-election feature article:

"Webb is not only a gifted novelist, but something rarer: a novelist of ideas. And all his ideas are reactionary. Together [his] books form a long, eloquent protest against the wussification of America, exemplified in the Washington world of slick pols, butt-covering bureaucrats, and the panty-waist, nancy-boy journalists who serve as their stenographers."

Now, I ask again. Was The Weekly Standard trying to help, or hurt, George Allen with this tribute to his opponent, James Webb ?

James Webb was too well-liked to go after him personally on things like his writing.

I don't know that this is true. I still don't believe that Novelgate had any effect. When Rasmussen polled on it, 20% said the writings were of concern to them. I believe the NRSC's decision to go after him for his reaction to Tailhook was the real turning point. Webb stood up to the feminazis and the NRSC slammed him for it. How stupid could Elizabeth Dole have been. Tens of thousands of normally Republican military voters throughout the state decided to thank to Webb for standing up to the feminazis who turned a minor incident into an inquisition. That alone could have been the 7,000 vote difference.

And how many conservatives were turned on by attacking Webb for saying Tailhook was overblown, or that back in 1979 he opposed women in the military -- didn't most military people come slowly to women in the military?

Webb never even said women shouldn't be in the military. His piece was about women in combat. As I have said here many times, what kind of conservative attacks a guy for saying that ground combat is no place for a woman.

The problem with the campaign was two-fold: the decision to run Allen as a radical feminist sympathizer, and the relentless attacks of the media. If Webb had used the word macaca, do you think it would have been mentioned in 200 Washington Post articles?

Yes, and I'm sure that we can also expect The Wall Street Journal to promote Guiliani and McLame as the only two men who can rescue the Republican Party in 2008.

The Rockefeller wing of the Republican Party is trying to becomes it's new foundation.

It ought to be obvious to us all by now that everybody knew what was going to happen Tuesday except us voters.

Not "us voters", but "us Freepers." Only here in Freeperland was there hyterical denial of the obvious right up until the polls closed. Apparently Freepers here got into such a cave mentality that they were willing to believe all 22 pollsters were wrong!!

Webb said that women did not belong in the military academies. Guess he felt their place was in the bedroom being referred to as monkey faces. NO doubt his third wife, a viet namese, thought that was just peachy keen.

The women in the academies felt that his comments created a hostile environment for them.
