Airports across India were put on high alert today after a warning that a plane flying to Europe or the US could be hijacked, officials said.
Officials at the airport in the southern Indian city of Chennai tightened security for passengers boarding flights to Europe and the US, adding a second round of body checks using metal detectors.
"We have taken special security measures in view of the threats," said Dinesh Kumar, the airport's director of security.
Security also was stepped up at the New Delhi international airport, according to a duty officer.
The additional security measures were put in place following intelligence reports, said an official at the civil aviation ministry.
The official didn't elaborate, but the CNN-IBN television station reported that a US internet centre received an email saying there were plans to hijack a US or Europe-bound flight from India. The centre handed the email to the FBI which informed Indian intelligence, the report said.
The report did not say who sent the email or if any particular airport or airline was at risk.
Only days earlier, a letter warning of imminent attacks at airports or on aircraft in southern India prompted officials to issue a security alert for airports there. The letter was sent to the director of the domestic airport in the southern city of Trichy.
Authorities said they were investigating the letter, which was written in Tamil. Its sender described himself as an al Qaida supporter.
Today, police erected barricades on roads leading to airports in major cities including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai.
Kumar at the Chennai airport said the extra security measures will not lead to delays.
"There is no need to panic. There is no need (for passengers) to come early," he said.
The Amish again?
The Dolly Llama thinks it might be some mischievous methodists.
Nah! Probably the Mennonites this time.
"The Amish again?"
I think it must be the Baptists. Possibly the Hindus.
Waiting for the "In a fashion reminiscent of Gunjas Din" from Kerry.
Those waskely Yuts...
Don't worry, now that Nancy is here, everything should be fine.
No, not Mennonites. This time it's disgruntled Masons and I don't mean the ones who build walls.
Nah. They've received world wide orders to destroy the White House.
I didn't link the two, but it is still too early for my brain to function properly.
Makes sense. A hijacking in a US city or with a preponderance of American citizens would be met by the resistance of the militia. This notion, expressed in our constitution, doesn't exist elsewhere...
I just did a google search which revealed: direct flights from various India airports and various airlines to Washington, D.C.
It's happening. The jihadists were empowered by the last US election. They are going to get bolder, knowing full well that the US will do nothing to stop them. In fact, the demands for full victim status for all jihadists and their sympathizers will grow louder, and will be fulfilled!
There will never be profiling at airports. There will be no revoking of visas of those who sympathize with jihadists. The slightest look or word will now be used to get millions of dollars from Christians and Jews which will be used to fund terror.
The next big terrorist attack will not receive any response.
All that from the latest election.

Yup, you gotta watch out for those Baptists, or even worse, the Amish, they teach their kids to strap dynamite on their bodies and bomb planes or fly them into buildings. Innocent muzzies don't do that. /sarc
