Wouldn't that be like putting Clinton in charge of girls volleyball.

The new Congress hasn't convened.

Doesn't stop them from theatrics, er, preparing.

I don't understand how this can happen now. The new Congress hasn't convened. The Congress now is not a 'Rat majority. They've got some new members coming in who haven't taken office yet, and so can't vote on things like this. Is it some kind of symbolic gesture, a sort of rub your nose in it deal? Wouldn't surprise me if it were. Can't expect much class from a bunch of 'Rats.

Both parties do this every Congress. The Republicans will be electing their leadership for the new Congress tomorrow.

The formal vote is taken when the new Congress convenes, but both parties do the actual electing early, so the new leaders can start preparing.

Seems kind of dumb. The 'Pubs have the majority right now, so they should elect the Senate leader. Likewise the House. If the 'Rats want meaningless gestures, give them to them.

Good picture!

After two years of DemoRat control of Congress, voters will be ready to switch back to Republicans in 2008.

There is no need to elect a majority leader for this Congress-- he was elected two years ago and continues to serve. But both parties want to know now who their leaders will be for the next Congress when it convenes in January, so they both hold non-binding votes this week. The membership of the new Congress-- not the outgoing Congress-- votes on that.

You and me, both, Sandra! I used to watch Brit Hume's show, but no more. I can't stand to watch all of these RAT poseurs preening, pontificating and patting each other on the backs and having Gorb-asms all over my television screen. It's TV Land for me!

Criminal behavior is not a disqualifier in RAT politics.

Like I said, seems kind of dumb, kind of like grandstanding, rubbing the other guy's nose in it. A non-binding vote. The incoming members haven't been sworn in yet. They're going to vote again. They might change their vote. The vote when the new Congress convenes is the one that counts. Just save the grandstanding and wait until then.

I think it would be sweet if the 'Pubs could work a backroom deal to nominate Lieberman for Senate leader. Get 50 votes for him (assuming he votes for himself) and Cheney breaks the tie. I know there is no guarantee that will hold if a 'Pub flip-flops or if that one 'Pub Senator from WY who is sick ends up biting the dust, but it's a fun fantasy to think about, Dirty Harry getting snubbed and all. What've we got to lose, we're no going to get any of our guys elected leader.
