That would be
"To raise and support Armies, . . ."
And "To provide and maintain a Navy;"
Minor points I know. Still, I am always amazed at the incredible care our founders exercise in crafting our Constitution. No matter what the left believes, it means what it says.

I feared we were going to be in deep trouble when they started too call the terrorists insurents and the Army lawyers had to OK an attack on one of the terrorist big whigs. John Wayne never had to deal with crap like that.

SecDefs come and go. Rummie had 6 years...longer than anyone else in history. He had a good run.
Change is the nature of the job.

"The supreme irony of the campaign against Rummy and the President is that by all indications, both listened intently to their generals in the field and gave them free reign to pursue their post-modern warfighting theories into oblivion. But if the President or the SecDef would have taken drastic action and fired the lot of them, they would have been accused of being LBJ and McNamara reincarnated." For the sake of the country these generals should have been fired regardless of the possible name calling the CIC and others may have encountered.Right on! I can't say how many times I've seen FReepers attack the "PC way" Bush and Rumsfeld were "forcing our generals to fight this war", when in fact they were doing what most people say should be done: letting the "professionals" run the war. Don Rumsfeld didn't develop the Marines "expeditionary doctrine", by which you "win hearts and minds" by developing positive relationships with the natives. I suspect that a lot of that stuff was the residue of that old "snake eater", Shelton who was Clinton's Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and guys like Wes Clark and Eric Shinseki as well. Turning soldiers into diplomats.

I understand your Grandson's feelings on the way we are forced to fight the war. I was in Fallujah before the battle for the city as a member of 4th MEG. I can think of at least four instances where we were receiving fire and order not to fire back. Scary, huh? Anyway out of our six humvees the Lt. was the only one to receive a CAR, and he was back at the compound for all of the engagements!
