WASHINGTON (AP)--A House Republican and Democrat, in the new spirit of bipartisanship, are urging President George W. Bush to name defeated Republican Rep. Jim Leach to be the next U.S. ambassador to the U.N.

A job for the spineless Leach. Sure!!
Leach makes a saltine seem bold and spicy. He's as zesty and dynamic as milquetoast.
I think Rick Santorum would be a better choice. Just watching his old democrat collegues diss him would blow the democrats "bipartisanship" out of the water.
Yes if it were the Jim Leach who went after Billary for the Whitewater scandal... NO if it is the Jim Leach who has been Uber RINO the past several years.
A real shame.
After the way the dems have crapped on Mr. Bush, screw this bipartisanship b.s.
Wow! Might as well send a small patch of brown liquid..
But I still think an even better idea is to just give Bolton a second recess appointment. Repeat until the Dims allow him an up or down vote.
About Santorum - I think it is a mistake to name someone so high profile. Why are we dignifying the United Nations by sending our best people to be Ambassador there?
Make Santorum our Ambassador to the Vatican.
Yeah, if Dubya names Leach to the UN, Gov. Thomas Vilsack (D)
gets to name is his replacement. Now there's a good idea....
That can't be good.
Forget the fact that he is a RINO, his speaking pattern will put everyone to sleep.
That would be fine. Just keep him away from the weather bureau.
Hmmmm.... How about Michael Steele?
Leach lost his election, and governors don't appoint congressmen.
Jim Leach is my congressman here in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Bush would be CRAZY to put him in the UN.
With friends like Leach, Bush wouldn't need enemies. He'd be fighting Bush's policies, not supporting them.
What a waste.
Can we say Linguini?
The guy wasn't smart or observant enough to realize that his seat was in jeopardy (despite warnings from the national party apparatus). In no way is he smart enough to represent this country's interests at the UN.
And add to your brilliant idea (I actually mean that!) that GW could issue an executive order to stop ALL funding to the UN and ALL UN activities until Bolton gets his vote.
Is Jesse Helms still around? lol
We're already withholding funding. Their receiving funds is tied to their effort to clean up the un.
I'm not a big fan of this new trend among us to enforce "ideological purity" on the Republican Party, but Jim Leach really was a disaster. He was truly wrong on a host of really important issues. He was a spineless moderate when he should have been a Conservative, and he was an Authoritarian quasi-fascist when he should have taken more moderate positions. This guy was just flat out wrong about nearly everything.
Leach has never been the same since the Whitewater hearings.....if memory serves, people were going through his garbage, and leaving him threats on the phone, etc. (ala Kathleen Willey's dead cat). The real Jim Leach then disappeared, never to be heard from again.
Hillary's FBI files just keep on giving.
It'd make more sense to have him head up the DNC, frankly.
What a joke! We're going to replace the testosterone endowed Mr. Bolton with this soggy piece of limp toast? Jim Leach is a spineless, ball-less limp wristed girly man. God help us!
Don't I wish! Little did we know that Jesse Helms owned the only set of balls in the GOP Senate Caucus.
That speech where he went and told the UN how much they suck was priceless. XD
I've been thinking this all along (even before the Dims took control).
BTW, I still favor Ann Coulter as the perfect choice.
Are you certain we have paid ZERO to the UN--check again.
Say it ain't so, George!!!!!!!!!
Get the US out of the UN and the UN out of the US.
Leach has been my congressman for nearly all of the 30 years he's been in the House.
The one thing I'll ALWAYS remember him for is when, after the 2000 election debacle, healong with the Hildabeastcalled for the ELIMINATION OF THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE.
That's right, folks. A congressman FROM IOWA said there should be no Electoral College.
It was then that I knew any additional talk of his alleged superior intellect would be utterly ridiculous.
Any sensible person would want to eliminate the Electoral College. It makes Presidential votes, like mine in MD, worthless. It's a wretched backwards and archaic system and I will vote for anyone advocating getting rid of it and letting the American people actually live in a democracy.
You bring up an interesting point. We know FBI is still loaded with CLintonistas, what about IRS? Wonder if they keep sending her info as she asks for it?
I used to think there was a time when I was young and arrogant and knew everything. Now, I know I was wrong to think so.
Thanks for setting me straight.
Furthermore, it's a real shame you weren't around for the founding fathers to benefit from your wisdom. What were they thinking?!
Nice to see you learned to debate from the Al Sharpton Ad Hominem Attack School. Were you a graduate or did you learn to dodge arguments by close observation and emulation?
