He was later quoted as saying, "Oh man, I would give my left nut to have not done that..."

> Nice story, but it bothers me that the article implies that this was yet another case of a dangerous evil gun going off by itself -- twice!..."accidentally pulled the trigger in the process..."

That's an excellent point. It's conceivable that something like a belt buckle caught the trigger, but I'll bet that he was disobeying the "Keep your finger off the trigger" rule of gun safety. A dismaying number of inexperienced shooters think their finger belongs on the trigger as long as the gun is in their hand.

Sticking a loaded gun in your pants is nuts.

> Sticking a loaded gun in your pants is nuts.

Especially if you have your finger on the trigger, which this guy apparently did. Guns generally don't just "go off" by themselves.

From the 2000 Darwin awards nomines list:

[Arkansas Democrat Gazette] Two local men were seriously injured when their pickup truck left the road and struck a tree near Cotton Patch on State Highway 38 early Monday morning. Woodruff County deputy Dovey Snyder reported the accident shortly after midnight Monday.

Thurston Poole, 33, of Des Arc and Billy Ray Wallis, 38, of Little Rock are listed in serious condition at Baptist Medical Center. The accident occurred as the two men were returning to Des Arc after a frog-gigging trip.

On an overcast Sunday night, Poole's pick-up truck headlights malfunctioned. The two men concluded that the headlight fuse on the older model truck had burned out.

As a replacement fuse was not available, Wallis noticed that the .22 caliber bullet from his pistol fit perfectly into the fuse box next to the steering wheel column. After inserting the bullet, the headlights again began to operate properly and the two men proceeded toward the White River bridge.

After traveling about 20 miles and just before crossing the river, the bullet apparently overheated, discharged and struck Poole in the right testicle. The vehicle swerved sharply right exiting the pavement and striking a tree.

Poole suffered only minor cuts and abrasions from the accident, but will require surgery to repair the other wound. Wallis sustained a broken clavicle and was treated and released.

"Thank God we weren't on that bridge when Thurston shot his balls off or we might both be dead" stated Wallis.

"I've been a trooper for ten years in this part of the world, but this is a first for me. I can't believe that those two would admit how this accident happened," said Snyder.

Upon being notified of the wreck, Lavinia, Poole's wife asked how many frogs the boys had caught and did anyone get them from the truck.

2000 Darwin Award Nominees

NOMINEE No. 1: [San Jose Mercury News]: An unidentified man, using a shotgun like a club to break a former girlfriend's windshield, accidentally shot himself to death when the gun discharged, blowing a hole in his gut.

NOMINEE No. 2: [Kalamazoo Gazette] James Burns, 34, (a mechanic) of Alamo, Mich., was killed in March as he was trying to repair what police describe as a "farm-type truck." Burns got a friend to drive the truck on a highway while Burns hung underneath so that he could ascertain the source of a rumbling noise. Burns' clothes caught on something, however, and the other man found Burns "wrapped in the drive shaft."

NOMINEE No. 3: [Hickory Daily Record] Ken Charles Barger, 47, accidentally shot himself to death in December in Newton, N.C. Awakening to the sound of a ringing telephone beside his bed, he reached for the phone but grabbed instead a Smith & Wesson .38 Special, which discharged when he drew it to his ear.

Sounds like his second shot went off half-cocked. Yo, Joe, my daughter might be reading this. (OK she's 37 and not a bad shot, but it's the principle of the thing ... what if she tells your joke to my grandson? What would the neighbors say?)

Technically speaking, without knowing the caliber of the weapon, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it were the old "buck and ball" round.

if all he did was cringe, he must be Chuck Norris.

Nah, if it were Chuck Norris, the bullet would have shattered, thereby taking out all of the bad guys...

"Police did not release information about the size of the gun he was using at the time."

Well, the barrel length is probably 2" to 3" shorter then when he started.....

This started as a good pun but just petered out....

I'll bet he'll be using a lighter load, in that pistol, in the future.
