"3rd in line for the presidency."

2nd in line, dear. Cheney is first in line. House Speaker second.

Try this:

Pelosi Splits Democrats With Push For Murtha - Speaker-to-Be Accused Of Strong-Arm Tactics

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/15/AR2006111501521_pf.html

Well, that certainly looks like a good source.

That makes the situation much more entertaining. If she actually put some serious effort into getting the votes and didn't qite make the grade.

The fact Pelosi put this joke of a gasbag up for Speaker in the first place ought to tell you how much of a circus things are going to be in the house for the next 2 years.

I have to admit that your knowledge of Murtha is much more detailed than mine. He only came to my attention when he began badmouthing the troops. That being said, your observation is interesting. If Murtha is "blue-dog" and Hoyer is an "anti-Reagan" then it might be more philosophically consistent of the Democrats that they chose Hoyer.

Murtha should have taken the bribe when he had the opportunity.

They couldn't pick a more unattractive, un-American leader.

I really do not agree that Murtha winning would be good for the GOP. As disgusting and repulsive as we find Murtha, the public seems to dig him. He won his race quite handily, so I doubt he will self-destruct, as the MSM has portayed him as a couragous hawk with the courage to oppose an "illegal war".

"He just told Matthews last night he had the votes. It wouldn't be the first time he'd be wrong.....nor the last."

Murtha lied, ballots died.

He needs to start an investigation and determine who "lied" to him about how they would vote.

If just last night he "had the votes" and today he got creamed, clearly there was some lying going on amongst his collegues.

Where have YOU been the past several days?

Out of it, I guess.

Republican Red linked the WaPo article. This makes things much more entertaining - if she tried some heavy duty arm twisting and didn't get what she wanted.

Murtha is an unindicted co-conspirator from Abscam.. he's a pork barrel guy who gets perpetually re-elected because he brings pork from washington to the Mon Valley.. and there are so many left over steel hunky union mentality fools up there who dream of what it used to be instead of doing something to actually clean the state up that he'll keep getting re-elected from there until he dies.

"Pelosi's aggressive intervention on behalf of Murtha baffled and angered many Democrats, who said she unnecessarily put her reputation on the line out of misplaced loyalty to a friend and because of a long-standing feud with Hoyer, the minority whip. Pelosi pushed Murtha's candidacy at social events, in private meetings and with incoming freshman Democrats; they were called to her office to discuss committee assignments, only to hear first that she needed Murtha in order to be an effective leader."

Ah, they're eating their own and her intimidation tactics are backfiring! Love it!!!
