The linked article is subscriber-only, but an excerpt is here:
After meeting privately with Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) earlier this week, Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) said Thursday he is moving forward with plans to resurrect the languishing immigration reform measure before the end of this year.Specter said the three Senators, at the core of negotiations over the legislation, "decided to make an effort" to spend the next month working to bridge the divide between the House and Senate over the issue. He said the Nov. 7 elections, in which Republicans lost control of both chambers, sent a signal to Congress that voters want immigration reform now, and it is incumbent upon lawmakers to heed that call before the end of the 109th Congress.
"I'd like to do it," Specter said. "We have time."
Specter said he already has talked to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) about his intentions, adding that he expects Frist will discuss the matter with Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) when the two leaders meet later this week. The Judiciary chairman said he is also engaging the White House on the issue...

Please contact as many Senators as you can with your thoughts.
That feel a little better.
Gawd, I really hate this guy.
I'm sure glad the Republicans went all out to get Senator Specter re-elected. That guy really knows how to repay a favor.
Comprehensive = Amnesty
Paging Senator Kyl...we need your help! Time for us to do some obstructing.
I'll contact my Senators...Kennedy and Kerry. They're sure to see things my way.
Thank the send the message voters who kicked out the gop house.
After all it would be so good to get gridlock for two years and send them a message.
Well now we are full steam ahead with the amnesty liberal agenda now that the only conservative firewall has been taken down.
The same perot voters were out in full force for this election.
The Libertarian party is also gloating saying we told you we would punish you.
What Americans want is current immigration laws enforced. We don't care how long illegals have been here or how cheap they will work, nor how well their kids are doing in school whether they are born here or not. We don't care what kind of emotional distress is caused by sending them back across the border. If the law is broken, it is broken and we don't reward people for doing that unless one has been voted into congress.
Why don't they try bridging the gap between the American people and Congress. Much better idea.
I agree and the illegal aliens ain't cheap. With all their freebies; they make more than I do.
I'm not worried - they aren't going to do a damn thing about illegal immigration one way or another.
After all, about half the Senate will spend 2007 campaigning for President, and about one-quarter will do the same for most of 2008!
called Kerry's office to complain one day about illegal immigration and they transferred me to an 'aide' who spoke broken English with a Spanish accent. Made me even madder.
Yeah, but they can give the illegals already here amnesty, which will REALLY unleash the floodgates.
Aw c'mon. All of the "Rudi for President" threads say we need more RINOs.
We, the people, do not want reform, we want the existing _law_ enforced. If you expect the citizens to follow the law, you better start expecting non-citizens to do the same - is there anybody home in Washington, D.C. (District of Corruption)?
He's doing Bush's bidding just fine.
Me too! Leave it to RINO bastards like Sphincter to read last weeks results wrong in every case. I hope somebody on our side comes up with a way to throw ups some road blocks.
I used to think in terms of .. "If I ever meet a liberal or socialist or __________________ (fill in the blank) ".
But now, honestly ... if I ever found out one of my neighbors voted Rick Santorum out ... TWO sidewall cuts. NO ONE keeps two spares.
"Gawd, I really hate this guy."
Thank God the Bushbots supported him, and Chafee too, or we'd be in the minority in the Senate.
"He's doing Bush's bidding just fine"
Actually this is encouraging news. If Specter thinks he has to get this done before the end of the year that might mean he sees the next congress less in the hands of the wage depression lobbies and their ethnic public front groups.
Oh, my god; no wonder we lost everything............LOL.
Well, since the BushBots voted, I guess the only people to blame for us being in the minority would be you malcontents, huh?
Calling Lott and Cochran. Trent can get that wet noodle whip out.
And, as an added bonus, we loose Santorum.
Must be nice to know that when you lose you win.
How DOES that work, Mr. President?
The media will incessantly chant that Lott is a closet racist and he will cave and give them more than even they expected. (They being Democrats, Rinos and Bush).
With the tremendous range of viewpoints on FR, one thing we all can agree upon is that Specter is a royal pain in the ass 95 percent of the time.
Hang in there, House members! No amnesty this session or the next session, either!

Specter wants "comprehensive immigration reform" this year
I think we have a good chance [at passing the amnesty bill]
. It's an important issue and I hope we can get something done on it. I meant to put that in my list of things that we need to get done. - GWB
Oh darn. Specter doing the job that Bush 'forgot'. Can someone please remind Bush that he 'forgot' to secure our borders too. It's only been, what, 5 years and counting?
Now Specter can stand with the dems!

If you had directed your ire at the Chaffees, Specters, McCains, Grahams, Snowes, Collins, Martinez', Tony Snow, and the President who told the faithful to go to hell on amnesty, the Santorums and Allens would still be in office.
Maybe when it's your job and your neighborhood that's affected (and it's coming soon) you might question the RINOs that put you in that spot, rather than those who are trying to fix the problem.
Good graphic potlatch
Thank you devolve!
Yes, and Senators make terrible Presidents, in fact when was the last time a Senator ever was elected President??
We dodged that bullet with Lurch, that was too close and now he's been thrown overboard too.
"I'll contact my Senators...Kennedy and Kerry. They're sure to see things my way."
As will my two, Nelson and Martinez! /s
This sucks. Is Mcaniac that out of step with the voters in this country and our state? They really didn't learn a thing last week.
I'll admit I voted for Perot in 1992.... that is why to this day I tell everyone DON'T do it!! Don't vote Third Party... they don't work and cause more trouble than anything any of us can possibly do...
Rudi is in favor of stronger borders. Try another one.
I used to use italics all the time for the comment I was replying to, usually just use 'bold' now.
And I'll contact mine....Feinstein and Boxer...
Yep, they are sure to agree with me - NOT!
Who gives a rat's patoot what this loser wants? It's because of backstabbers like him that the GOP is out of power. Why is anyone in the GOP even giving him the time of day?
Kyl, heck, we need Sen. Byrd!!! He's blocked it before and he can do it again.
I really, realy hate the guy. Seriesly.
