Radio Legend Lets Anti-Hunting Colors Fly High- (11/17) National Join our e-mail alert list
One of Americas most well-known radio commentators earlier this week showed his anti-hunting colors in a nationally broadcast message.
On Nov. 13, syndicated broadcaster Paul Harveys noon report announced how thankful Michigan doves are that voters rejected the states dove hunting initiative. He proudly rattled off a number of other ballot issue campaigns to which the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has contributed in recent years, including efforts to ban trapping and bear hunting. Harvey concluded by praising the organizations new-found political prowess, saying HSUS has never had such clout on the Hill.
Obviously, Paul Harvey is entitled to his opinion. In fact, its his job. However, the advocacy of an agenda that seeks to destroy the lifestyle and livelihoods of millions of Americans will elicit responses.
Americas sportsmen do not stand idle when the faction that is trying to eliminate hunting, fishing and trapping is handed credibility, said Bud Pidgeon, U.S. Sportsmens Alliance president. Paul Harveys support and recognition of the animal rights movement, and HSUS specifically, is a blow to the pro-hunting movement and deserves to be addressed.
This is not the first time Harvey has used his radio segment as a soapbox for his animal rights viewpoint. He has praised People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals leader Ingrid Newkirk for her dedication and commitment towards making planet earth a better place for animals. He made these glowing comments about a woman who hopes hoof-and-mouth disease will come to America!
Take Action! Sportsmen are urged to express their dissatisfaction with Paul Harveys controversial radio segment. Let radio stations that air Paul Harveys program know that you object to his extremely controversial views on animal rights.
Also, contact Paul Harvey sponsors and let them know that you object to their support of a program that acts as a mouthpiece for the anti-hunting movement.

Don't expect him to expose the overblown salaries of the HSUS directors and employees, or the minute amount of money they spend on helping animals (ANY animals, including cats and dogs). And don't expect him to reveal that all those tax exempt millions they raise annually don't go toward spaying, neutering, housing or feeding animals, but instead go to lobbying for/against political condidates friendly to/against animal rights goals.
And this is not just about hunting, it is about medical research on animals, wearing fur, what you eat, the effort to destroy the agricultural interests in this country, and on and on.
Ping.
"thankful doves".....hmmmm
With the brain barely the size of a pea, I would think that pretty much the only feelings doves would have are being hungry, full, sleepy, alert, hot, cold and horny for doves of the opposite sex.
Harvey is an idiot.
I don't know if it's my imagination or what but Harvey has been trashing President Bush and the war in Iraq a lot lately also. I guess he's just getting old.
Sheesh.
Pigeon? I always love it when the spokesman has a name directly tied to the story!
He's channeling Jimmah Cartah.
You go girl..!!
I'll bet you're right.
Is he still alive?..Never could stand his commentary....
Taking an animal's life simply for the fun of it is an ugly act which reveals something significant about the person who does it.
Does Paul Harvey still have an audience? I could never stand to listen to him. My grandfather used to listen on his car radio, but he's been dead almost ten years now. My father can't stand Paul Harvey either.
Doves are tastey. There are lots of ways to cook them.
Everybody I know who dove hunts eats the doves, just like the cows and chickens that are killed for people to eat.
I thought his son took over. Isn't he in his 90s?
Personally I don't see the point in hunting anything smaller than a duck or anything you don't actually eat. I do however make an exception for varmints that become a problem.
Is this the son? I thought Paul Harvey stroked out years ago?
Either way, I personally find Dove Hunting a waste of time. Not that they aren't tasty, but the older I get the larger my targets need to be, LOL!
How absolutely appalling that this guy would express a personal opinion that conflicts with the right to blow small creatures out the sky for sport.
I was careful to say "simply for the fun of it". I am not a vegetarian.
Paul- I respect you.
If we don't hunt these animals, there is no population control on them.
As RoseMarie told Doris Day years ago:
Honey, if I don't have these alligator shoes and matching purse, we would be up to our a$$e$ in alligators in Florida in a matter of months......
I've never had any success hitting them. But I do enjoy eating them. Here in the South it is always a great get together with lots of food, fun and beautiful dogs.
While I don't agree with Paul Harvey on this one, my gosh, isn't he around 100 years old? If this is his "thing," who cares? He is entitled to his opinion.
I remember listening to him in the car when I was a little girl. He was an old man THEN.
Not being a hunter, I need instructions on how to "field strip" them; we have zillions of them here in the desert, and whenever I hear a thump in our back glass, I'm likely to find another that's flown into the window and snapped it's little neck.
Amen. I would like to go a little further than that, but I will refrain.
Thanks. :)
"But I do enjoy eating them."
One of the first things my husband made for me was a squab dish. Yum! (He was a professional chef at the time, but anyone that can follow a recipe can handle it.)
We need to ping that Carlo guy for some recipes!
(OT: Went to a craft show with MIL this morning. We found these awsome fishing lures for our menfolk. They're a treble hook, a silver Cabela's spinner, and a Leinie's beer bottle cap! The guy swore up and down they've caught him lots of fish.)
I wasn't aware that Harvey had died, and this may be his son.
I do know that the senior Harvey's wife was on the HSUS board at one time, and the HSUS wants to end medical research on animals. Do you know anybody with heart disease, diabetes, birth defects, etc., that has benefitted from such research?
There is a LOT of info out there on the HSUS, proof of what they do and they don't do with the tax free millions they raise from unsuspectng people who think they are helping animals.
Do you eat meat? What is the difference between shooting a dove or raising a chicken in a slaughterhouse to eat, other than you let somebody else kill your meat for you. At least the dove lived in a natural environment before somebody killed it. Not so for the chicken.
As for him expressing his opinion, that is fine. I just don't beleive the "rest of the story" is being told, and never will be. I used to enjoy his reports but not now, not knowing what I do.
What the hell would any of this/his sort have done a hundred and 10, 150 years ago? Starved I guess........lessen they were 'city slickers' even back then.
I wouldn't shoot an animal for the fun of it, so I agree with what you are saying.
Unfortunately, the HSUS spends tons of money trying to outlaw the legal hunting of these, and all other species. So they are in effect, telling others they can't shoot and eat doves.
Whether I agree with what he says or not is irrelevant. It's his personal commentary program, end of story.
I've far better things to do than find things to be offended about.
I love garage sales and flea markets for finding fishing tackle. LOL, I'd love to see one of those lures.
At a conference I went to in October I bought (during an auction) a George Varney engraved handcrafted bamboo fly rod for $35. Last I checked it was worth no less than $350.
I listen to Paul Harvey every day. I don't expect to agree with him all of the time, and I don't want to. If I only listened to people I agreed with, I'd probably never learn anything.
Great find! I've got all of my Grandpa's old fishing gear wrapped up and increasing in value as I type. :)
Don't knock it till you tried it. What's the sport in hiring an exterminator to control roaches when you could stomp on them one at a time? Enjoy your chicken. They are all God's creatures. Think about that the next time a bug splats on your windshield. Hunting can be a great sport for all ages and genders.
Paul Harvey ought to go out and thank every hunter he sees. Does he have any idea how dangerous it would be for his old a** to totter across the parking lot if mastadons and sabretooth tigers were rampaging through it??? He can thank hunters for that.
I suspect nature will silence Mr. Harvey long before any opposition to his political stances. I have enjoyed his broadcasts and unique take on the news for years. I will graciously allow him one issue to separate us.
Paul Harvey Aurandt (born September 4, 1918), better known as Paul Harvey, is an American radio broadcaster for the ABC Radio Networks. He broadcasts News and Comment at 8:30am ET in the morning (5 minutes) and at 11:30am (15 minutes) Monday through Friday and at noon on Saturday, as well as his famous The Rest of the Story.....
Old Paul has finally lost it.....
It's time for him to back away from the microphone.......
He's there to hawk products, nothing more.
You have an interesting situation - sort of like getting manna from heaven!
Here's my suggestion. Almost all the usable meat on a dove is in the breast. You can pick the feathers off and gut the whole bird just like a chicken, but it's extremely time consuming and the amount of extra meat you'd get is negligible. Just insert your fingertip under the breastbone where it covers the abdomen and pop or rip the whole breast off the carcass. You can then easily clean the remaining skin and feathers off the breast.
Since you're only getting a bird every now and then, simply save each cleaned dove breast in a ziplock freezer bag until you have enough for a meal. When you have a sufficient number, thaw and marinate them for about an hour in your favorite marinade (zesty italian dressing is very good), then wrap each breast with a strip of bacon, place on skewers and grill quickly over medium-hot charcoal. Yum! Endless variations of this recipe are possible limited only by your imagination.
I've been observing and commenting on the recent shift of Harvey's public broadcasts more towards liberal causes.
I heard him mention the animal rights thing, but I didn't associate it with the PETA nuts, until now.
Thanks..now it sort of comes back to me. Many years ago, I did do some pheasant hunting with a pal, and all I could remember was him putting the birds breast up, and he'd stand on the spread wings and do something similar.
Proposition 3 was destined to lose here in Michigan. The HSUS dumped over a half million dollars into the anti-dove hunting campaign and successfully sued the state to put a temporary ban on the hunting. 2005 was the first year we ever had the hunt and it was very limited as to where they could be shot.
This year we don't know how much they spent yet on their intense advertising campaign but you can bet it was alot. And with the ads they were running, there was no way they were going to lose.
The Prop 3 supporters blew this one but they really didn't have a chance anyway. They should have focused all their attention on the financial backing and agenda of the HSUS instead of a lame attempt to say dove hunting is fun and they taste good.......The sight of a freshly shot dove flopping on the ground which was used by HSUS resulted in overwhelming support for voting down the proposal.......
In the last two months he has advocated legalized marijuana and embryonic stem cell research - both for geriatric care.
Is it Jr. or Sr. to blame??
As you probably know, the Fund for Animals and the HSUS merged in 2005 to create a powerful lobby to funnel money into state and federal campaigns. From the HSLF:
Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF) is a social welfare organization incorporated under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code. HSLF works to pass animal protection laws at the state and federal level, to educate the public about animal protection issues, and to support humane candidates for office.
Most animal protection organizations are non-profit charities and, as such, are limited in their lobbying work. Even if you combine their spending on public policy lobbying, youd find that the total is miniscule compared to that of our opponents. The NRA, for example, spends tens of millions of dollars each year on lobbying and political activity. Our other political opponentsincluding the American Farm Bureau, the National Pork Producers Council, Safari Club International, and Ringling Bros.have huge war chests. We are at a distinct and often overwhelming disadvantage when we attempt to push sweeping and meaningful reforms.
HSLF was formed in 2004 as a separate lobbying affiliate of The Humane Society of the United States. As a 501(c)(4) lobbying organization, HSLF can engage in more public policy work, build an army of trained activists, and compete with other groups that have long been operating at a different level. HSLF may not be able to match its opponents dollar for dollar, but it will be more aggressive and more effective. That means more lobbyists at the state and federal levels, more ballot initiatives, and more victories for animals.
HSLF publishes the Humane Scorecard, which tracks the voting records of members of Congress, as well as a Voter Guide, which makes recommendations for supporting humane candidates. We also operate the Humane Action Network, which organizes thousands of volunteers and calls them to action on important issues, and publish HumaneLines, a free electronic newsletter with news and action alerts. Please join HSLF as we take our legislative activity to a whole new level and push forward a wide range of reforms for animals. Its time to get political for animals.
She may have seemed nice on his show, but you should read some of her actual quotes, among them wishing to bring hoof and mouth disease to the U.S. Also, Newkirk, one of the founders of PETA, has led that organization to funding legal costs of terrorists (AR terrorists) who firebomb research facilities, etc.
It has to be noted the HSUS and the PETA have, over the years, shared the same leaders, same board members (including extreme radicals who believe in violence toward its goals), and although the HSUS tries to convey an image of being an animal welfare group, the leaders are animal rights activists, which is far more extreme.
I am sure Harvey knows this, there is so much info out there on the two organizations and what they actually stand for.
"I was just thirteen, you might say I was a musical proverbial knee-high"
Ha, another John Sebastian fan. I love the Lovin' Spoonful.
You are absolutely right, and would be surprised at the freepers on here that believe the HSUS is about helping animals.
The NWTF, NRA, SCI, USSA and others need to get the word out more about exactly WHAT these AR groups are about, and it aint just about hunting.
Have you ever been on the Americans for Medial Progress site? Check it out sometime.
*** I guess he's just getting old.***
I remember Paul Harvey going into an anti-hunting rant in June,1971.
Hard to believe he went to a University not far from here.
I saw nothing anti-hunting about it, just a humorous poke at a truly weird turn of events that ought to be seen as cooky at best.
Maybe it helps to have no perspective or agenda when listening to his pieces.
He was poking fun, not saying that this was a 'great thing'.
Some of y'all are a bit too sensitive...
Where was "Taking an animal's life simply for the fun of it" mentioned?
Making a point by introducing a "red herring" argument reveals something significant about the person who does it.
