The Hate America Marxist Left leading the "anti-war movement" realizes that the reason they can not get the large marches seen in the 60s is due to the lack of a draft. As soon as the draft was no longer a threat, the large marches of the 60s stoppped. Charlie Rangel works with those leaders. Two and a half years ago, Charlie Rangel helped the MFSO and Code Pink Death March protest from Dover AFB to Walter Reed Army Hospital to the White House. Charlie spoke outside the gates of Dover AFB. A march that saw no American flags outside Walter Reed Army Hospital, while supposedly patriotic military families placed black funeral wreaths on the fences and in front of the Walter Reed sign. Early 2005, the anti-war movement realized it was not resonating with the general public and held a meeting to define strategy (see The nation March 2005, "The New face of protest"). A draft is the "Holy Grail" that the Hate America Marxist Left sees as the key to having the movement "rise up" instead of "dry up" as it did with their desperate attempt at revival on Veterans Day in Philadelphia.
The Nation, March 2005, "The New Face of Protest"
This could really backfire on the Left. Keep it up Charlie, I don't think this is gonna play well in Harlem.
When is America going to wake up to the people who are trying to destroy America?
Rangel epitomizes too dumb to know how dumb he looks. I would guess most people see him as just another used up old fart with nothing else to do but sit in congress until he dies.
Bump!
There was universal scorn for his suggestion.
He will not vote for this if it ever came to a vote.....again.

Democrat Plan Summarized in One Word: Draft
by Scott Ott
(2006-11-20) Rep. Charles Rangel, D-NY, yesterday unveiled the Democrat plan for boosting the minimum wage, providing free healthcare to millions more Americans, increasing college attendance, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preventing future U.S. wars of aggression.
Our plan is so simple and elegant that it can be stated in one word draft, said Rep. Rangel. By implementing a military draft, well provide a living wage and free healthcare to our new involuntary soldiers and their families, plus well give them college money after their term of service.
The New York Democrat, who has proposed a draft several times before, said taking many of the 18-to-26 year-olds off the nations highways will decrease the number of automobile fatalities and drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The most crucial element of the Draft America Plan, he said, is creation of a huge military force comprised of less-motivated troops in case the president must decide whether to go to war with North Korea or Iran, or to expand the global war on terror in other lands.
Right now, its the skill and passion of our all-volunteer force that gives George Bush the arrogance to challenge our enemies on their soil, Rep. Rangel said. With a military full of reluctant conscripts, Bush wont be so cocky. Well be safer because, as we all know, when American troops stay home fewer terrorists are created.
I read elsewhere that Rangels proposal will include "alternative service" provisions with the same educational etc benefits as military service........this is only a disguised gift to democrat voters-to-be.............somewhere else there will be created numerous groups of little lefty gestapo groups to further the lefty agenda dressed up as "alternative service"
personally, I think Rangel is badly miscalculating this. I know he is doing this purely for politics with no intention of this really becoming law.
2 points:
1. Contrary to his claims that it would make the use of military force less likely, it would have the effect of making a the use of force more likely without concern of being over stretched.
2. A large segment of the US population would be in fvaor of mandatory military service for all young adults, not just male.
If memory serves, Rangel voted against his own draft bill on '04
Mr. Rangel is a high-operating idiot. No, that gives a bad name to all idiots.
OK, how about this: He's a putz.
He's a putz and a schmuck. Do you think he will actually vote for it this time around?
I agree. This has never been anything but a political football to him to get the protests started up.
He did. It is sad when you vote against your own bill to distance yourself from the stupidity of the author of the bill.
If we had a draft without the loopholes of the last one, it wouldn't just be the children of the Left protesting.
No idea, Pete. Mr. Rangel is not one of the trustworthy types. He may be raising this question just to step into the political limelight.
One thing I do know, however: Military commanders do not want troops in their outfits who do not want to be there.
I think what he's really hoping is that he can stir up fear. Also, he's hoping that Bush will take the bait and start clamoring for a draft. That's his fondest fantasy.
