Spiegel ^ | November23, 2006 | swampsniper

Researchers have been scouring rivers in Europe and the US for traces of cocaine consumption. The result: Cocaine use is probably much greater than previously assumed -- and New Yorkers are the biggest coke-heads of all.

Well that explains Charlie Rangel, Hillary Clinton, Eliot Spitzer, to name but a few.

I suspect that if NYC was not totally stoned out of it's mind, most of the time, it would truly be a mess! Imagine all those crazy people, unsedated.

"New Yorkers are the biggest coke-heads of all"

Explains the correlation between voting for Democrats and zero self-survival instincts (vote Republican) even after 9/11.

Explains their general sheeple instincts in not opposing non-elected officials imposing "no smoking" bans, "no transfat" ban, and most recently "spy towers" in Harlem at the tax payers' expense for a couple of high end tower apartment buildings.

JUNK SCIENCE! Either that or the author of the article works for the NYT and makes stuff up. 3.5 mil in the Hudson watershed...HAH! There's 1 mil in Albany alone! Where did they take their measurements? There's just sooooo much wrong with the science as reported in the article!

Even though it may explain some things I just can't figure out, junks science is just that....junk!

They've been using those towers in North Dallas and adjacent affluent suburbs for years...usually park them in a shopping mall or movie theater lot.

Exactly correct!!!

Experts had foraged Germany's rivers for a substance produced by the human body during cocaine consumption, and the results were bountiful.

No where in the article does it tell us what the "substance" that the body produces is and why it is a marker for coke use.

"benzoylecgonine, norcocaine, and cocaethylene" are too hard for journalists to remember.

Science makes their little heads hurt, which is why they majored in bullshit.

I don't know about you, but I find this a little creepy. Seems to me our government is getting far to intrusive.

I realize on the surface it seems pretty innocuous, just gathering information to fight the WOT, but based on the # 1 lie in the world

"I'm from the government and am here to help you"

I don't like it.

From the article:

"They did not take the samples directly at the purification plants, where the by-product benzoylecgonine is broken down by about 80 percent"

This is a very poorly worded article. Benzoylecgonine is mentioned in such a way that one would wonder if it was something that was a part of the water treatment process.

"For example in New York, IBMP teams searched the Hudson River and found the by-products of a projected cocaine consumption totaling 16.4 tons per year."

SWAG - Scientific Wild-Ass Guess. Their inputs, criteria, etc., do nothing but generate a meaningless conclusion.

My non-scientific opinion is more people do more drugs than SWAG estimates or government estimates.
