WASHINGTON - American support for the fledgling Iraqi government is not unconditional, and Iraq should expect changes in the U.S. role, incoming House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Saturday.
"In the days ahead, the Iraqis must make the tough decisions and accept responsibility for their future," Hoyer, D-Md., said during the weekly Democratic radio address. "And the Iraqis must know: Our commitment, while great, is not unending."
Hoyer's comments were taped Wednesday, before an escalation in sectarian violence in Iraq. At least 215 Shiites were killed in bomb and mortar attacks Thursday in Sadr City. Shiites retaliated Friday by burning six Sunni Arabs alive and killing 19 others in attacks on Sunni mosques.
Once in power, Hoyer said, the Democrats hope to work with Republicans and the Bush administration to change direction in Iraq war plans, "because, clearly, the current strategy is not working."
Democrats will also seek to reach across the aisle to accomplish their other goals. One of their first priorities, Hoyer said, is to pass lobbying and ethics reform.
"We will restore civility and integrity to our legislative process, and transparency and accountability to our government," he said.
Other Democratic goals in the new Congress include:
_Increasing the minimum wage.
_Enacting the Sept. 11 Commission's security recommendations.
_Allowing the government to negotiate drug prices for Medicare patients.
_Cutting energy industry tax breaks.
_Lowering financial hurdles for access to higher education.
"Democrats pledge to address the concerns and issues that affect the lives of working families," Hoyer said.

That pic just begs for tars, feathers, a strong rope, and a lamp post.
Looks like Murtha inherited the extra facial skin than Nancy had lopped off
"In the days ahead, the Iraqis must make the tough decisions and accept responsibility for their future,"
And then once American troops are out, you'll manufacture some BS impeachable offense to kick Bush out and make sure the Iraqis can't take control of their future by cutting off our support, just like you did in Vietnam. Better beef up your bodyguards if that happens, pal.
2) Expect to be poorer.
3) Buy your burqas now, befroe the price goes up.
It may be a swamp now but when Nancy gets done it will be a cesspool.
In two years these folks will put the economy in the crapper and be blaming Bush for it.
Murtha looks like he's asleep or passing gas or some hideous
thing. Nan and this other clown look like they are on drugs.
I suppose who gives a rats rear end !
Nan could use some rogaine
Can Nancy actually close her mouth?
That's "common ground" to you, sir. /s
come to think of it,I've never seen it closed.
It should read 'Speaker-Elect, Nancy....'
She is not yet Speaker.
And this brings up a question...Since the dems insist on every vote counting, what about the undecided races.
Don't those dem winning candidates have a voice or vote?
Answer: No, it is all about Dem Imperialism. The crowning of Ms. Pelosi. (Not Hillary for the DUers.)
And, when the dems last held the gavel, there was no Internet or Cable TV (of importance). Soon the World shall see how they treat their minions.
Steny, a Southern Marylander, talking about ethics refore and transparency is kind of astonishing to anyone familiar with that part of the world for all these years. But then again it is matched by the same kind of stuff coming from Tommy D'allasandro's daughter. It is only matched by the similar talk from a guy who has been so close to the Vegas mob for so many years. It all depends upon completely uninformed listerners.
"In the days ahead, the Iraqis must make the tough decisions and accept responsibility for their future," Hoyer, D-Md., said during the weekly Democratic radio address. "And the Iraqis must know: Our commitment, while great, is not unending."
If he said this about the welfare state in America, I might support him! But he'd never say that, of course, and Iraqis can't vote for him...
Yup. Only guy not smiling in that picture. Guess he won't get what he wanted.
After withdrawing funding for the Vietnam conflict, the Dimocratz "killed" one to two million VN.
This time, they'll only kill 500,000 to one million Iraqis.
The Dimocratz are losing their edge, they should be able to kill more, ohh, I forgot about how many babies they're killing.
Thirty thousand people dedicated to make trouble is a very large bunch. You have to consider the greater number who support the gunmen and their relatives who at least tolerate them. Look at Ireland.
Probably will cause an all out civil war between Shiites and Shia. That will envelop the entire middle east. Look for millions dead and no gas anywhere, unless you are classified as a 'high priority' driver. It will be Jimmy Carter on steroids.
Thanks for trying.
It didn't matter here in California, the state GOP wouldn't even do anything to back the GOP Senate candidate.
No seats changed hands state-wise, and we lost Pombo to boot.
'Hoyer'. Just another clever way to spell 'whore'.
Ahnold wouldn't lift a finger for any of the GOP candidates.. not even fellow moderates like McPherson (whom Arnold appointed!) and the lady running for state senate and Orange County.
When Arnold is done as Governor in 2010, and he'll probably leave behind a party in shambles, just as Pataki did in NY, and Weld/Celluci/Romney have done in Massachusetts.
I can live with Arnold being a centrist, but it'd be nice if he'd at least try to establish a party organization and perhaps groom a successor who is able to stop Jerry Moonbeam from making a triumphant return as Guv.
I think Nasty's new face is melting. She must have spilled some water on it.
What does any of what he said have to do with working families? Anything about the border? drilling for oil. cutting taxes. Social security. Keeping us safe. Iran, North Korea.
I love these liberal jackasses lecturing Iraqis on what they must do. I'm sure the Iraqi government will get right on everything Hoyer says.
This trio of unpatriotic liberal socialist blimpophiles and others like them, will become targets for those who have made such sacrifices. The sad part is that such violence will come to socialist liberal politicians of the USA through these appeasers of Islamofascism themselves.
These dem idiots know not what they do, and just don't get it. They can have as many body guards as they feel necessary, and in the circumstances where they have turned our military into cut and run specialists, their lives will indeed be at risk no matter how many body guards they have.
This game of hard ball is not one that they can win by screaming, for that will not protect them, and the MSM slimes will not be able to protect them. And they have no idea what is about to happen to them. I await their utter destruction with a curious mixture of sadness and glee.
Nancy lost more than just an election when Murtha lost.
