Residents use pig races to deter building of mosque

(11/29/06 - KTRK/KATY, TX) - There's an awful lot of exciting news when you round the corner on Baker Road. One of two big yellow signs announces a new neighbor is coming soon.

K.I.A., that's the Katy Islamic Association, plan to build a mosque here.

"It's not an appropriate place to have a mosque or church," said resident Barbara Simpson.

It isn't going over real well.

"As a house of worship, they shouldn't be disturbing the peace and tranquility of 15 homes," said resident John Wetmore.

Neighbors tell us they're concerned about traffic and drainage and a little fear of the unknown.

Some of the homeowners even offered to buy the land back for more than a million dollars.

The K.I.A. doesn't seem very interested in the offers.

"We're not going anywhere," said Katy Islamic Association member Alvi Muzfar.

So it seems the community at the end of Baker Road has a pretty good fight.

But this fight has gone much farther than many between two neighbors. You see in these fights, sometimes neighbors throw mud at one another, in this instance they're wallowing in it.

Craig Baker owns pigs.

He's the guy behind the second big yellow sign on Baker Road. That's the one announcing Friday night pig races.

"What does it matter, I can do whatever I want with my land right," asked landowner Craig Baker.

Sure can.

But aren't pigs on the property line racing on a Friday night a little offensive to a Muslim neighbor?

"The meat of a pig is prohibited in the religion of Islam," said Katy Islamic Association member Youssof Allam. "It's looked upon as a dirty creature."

Yeah there's that and also that Friday night is a Muslim holy day.

"That is definitely a slap in the face," said Allam..

Now before you go thinking Craig Baker is unfair, or full of hate, or somehow racist, hear him out.

Baker has long roots here, his family named the road and when the new neighbors moved in, he tells us, they asked him to move out.

"Basically that I should package up my family and my business and find a place elsewhere," said Baker. "That's ridiculous, they just bought the place one week prior and he's telling me I should think about leaving." That new owners deny they ever said anything like that, but Baker isn't budging.

Baker admits the pigs are a message he is not leaving.

The 11-acre property is sandwiched between a pricey subdivision and Craig Baker's business.

K.I.A. eventually plans to build a mosque, a gym and a school there. There's no date for the groundbreaking ceremonies, or the first pig race.

Amazing....the confluence of things we do.Yes; all the time, synchronicity making the ordinary - less so.

. . . Yesterday, wanted to make an appointment; but thought too late and then spent more than an hour, looking for the card of the establishment to call; just in case. . . When I finally found it - just got it between my fingers - the phone rang. . .the woman on the other end asked me if I remembered I had an appointment 'today'. It was mistakenly put on her calender; and had someone elses phone number - which did not work - they looked to confirm my phone number from their file. . .and then called me.

But yes, all the time; red flags out there; aka 'coincidence'; reminding us; that there is so much more. . . ;^)

As for The Brylcreem Boys; had not heard of that movie. . .but sounds like good a 'good one'. . .

The site for the mosque ought immediately to be designated a dog park.

WTF?

I am so sick and tired of the *&^%&*# muslimes telling us what we can and can't do with our country. My suggestion to them, is move your slimey @$$ back to your muslime country.

And after the race, the losers get BBQ'd Saturday and Sunday.

Setup a BBQ stand and sell to people driving by.

Hell, I may have to make a road trip.

"It's looked upon as a dirty creature."

Funny, that is what we think of Muslims!

It figures our dear Saudi Arabian friends are behind the funding. Their noses seem to be into everything that concerns the wonderful religion of pieces. Nothing surprises me anymore.

Are the pigs named Mohamed and Abdul?

"Mohamed is rounding corner 1 with Abdul close behind."

Excuse me? WTF??? Soak the ground of their mosque with pig blood. Time to stop playing nice.

Pig roasts, prayer meetings, nativity scenes, crosses and stars of david on cars and yards, bacon wrapped korans left here and there.......I'm sure the neighbors can keep it interesting for the sand maggots.

I don't know what Bush's thing is with Muslims, but I don't trust him an iota on this.

Hush! It's an affair of the heart. ;)

Had I been President Bush, I would have gotten conservatives to run it.

He'll be leaving quite a legacy.

Too bad he doesn't put in a pig farm - a full fledge one at that.

This reminds me of something that happened years ago. In my hometown of Carmel, Indiana, there was a person who owned property around 116th St and Spring Mill Road. The owner was interested in building 3 story professional office building. Along Meridian Street (US31) especially around Meridian & 116th were these 7+ story buildings owned by an investment company. The owner of the company got in cahoots with the City Council and Mayor of Carmel and prevented this person from getting the zoning changed so he can build his office building. However, the property was zoned farming/agriculture. He decided to put in a full fledged pig farm as his response. The people in the investment company were pretty p*ssed. I don't know what kind of farming this person does since I left Indiana about 12 years ago.

They should have online betting and web cams for the pig races.

Government to people: "Online betting is bad for you. The Nanny state will protect you from yourselves!"

Add a few pole dancers, and plenty of beer;) And some fried pork (the losing pig from the previous weeks race) on the menu for the visitors of the races. And in the tradition of Americans being good neighbors they should take their new neighbors a plate full of this tasty American favorite food welcoming them into the area and invite to the races on Friday nights.

I say put in a chitlins factory right upwind, so all the pigfat smoke wafts through the mosque.
