NET senior editor James Kim and his family are missing.

The 36-year-old Kim, his wife Kati, and daughters Penelope (4 years) and Sabine (7 months) left their home in San Francisco last week on a road trip to the Pacific Northwest. They were last seen on Saturday, November 25, in Seattle, according to the San Francisco Police Department, which has opened a missing persons' investigation. They were driving a 2005 silver Saab station wagon with California personalized plates of "DOESF."

Those with information about the Kim family's whereabouts are asked to contact the SFPD immediately--at 415-558-5508 during normal business hours and at 415-553-1071 after-hours. The Portland Police Department can be reached at 503-823-4000.

We've just had about five days of some of the worst winter weather we've seen in decades - maybe ever. They could be slid off the road somewhere. It just cleared up today, maybe someone will find them if that is the case.

Missing for this long bodes ill for them all. Bad weather on top of it adds more hopelessness to the mix. It would be a real miracle if they are not dead.

Prayers.

Yeah, I can't say this sounds too good. If they'd gone on a hiking trip or something, I could understand them being gone for 4 1/2 days if they were lost. But if they took their 4-year-old and 7-month-old with them, I'm guessing they were just doing a standard family drive, and probably didn't have more than a few hours' worth of food with them. :(

You are not getting this on the news folks, but between the rain and the snow and cold that has hit us this month, this state is in bad shape outside of the cities.

My business partner has been without water, power, cable, phone for the last six days. In Stanwood, along the rural roads, it looks like the military came in and bombed the place. None of the powerlines made it. Six days later, and there are conductors littered everywhere.

Property owners are picking them up and moving them because they don't have a choice at this point. Along some of these routes, it looks like black snakes on the road.

A guy I graduated with who lives in Poulsbo was driving home the same night (Nov 25th) out of Neah Bay. His 4WD hit a patch of black ice on a turn and put the car down a steep embankment, putting the car into a wide, swollen creek. He and his family were able to get the windows down before the power was lost and spent some quality time on the roof of the car. He managed to jump into the creek, grabbed a fallen tree, pull himself up to the other bank, flag down a car, and then get EMS to rope traverse the family off the car.

Mt Rainier State Park is virtually destroyed. There are new creeks where they didn't exist before, entire sections of river bank have been established, bridges wiped out, etc.

These guys at the papers and stations need to get in a car and go for a spin.

I have a powerpoint of the Mt. Rainer damage, and its breathtaking. You can hit me privately if you want a copy.

I was thinking the same thing, if they were headed north on Friday, they drove right into it. I still can't get out of my driveway. We got 4 more inches last night, on top of the thirty that we already had, then it started to melt. It was like an avalanche every time the snow slid off of parts of my roof, today.

Bay City News Wire
SAN FRANCISCO FAMILY VANISHES DURING ROAD TRIP
11/30/06 8:20 PST
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)

Police tonight are looking for information in the case of a San Francisco family of four who are missing after setting out on a road trip last week.

San Francisco police say James and Kati Kim and their daughters Penelope, 4, and Sabine, 7 months, left to drive to Seattle on Friday, Nov. 24. They made it to Portland the following morning, then vanished.

The family was expected to return to San Francisco on Monday.

Police say both James and Kati Kim failed to show up for their appointments on Tuesday, and co-workers are worried for the family's safety.

Investigators say the Kims are known to keep in touch with their friends and colleagues daily by phone or e-mail.

The Kims were driving a 2005 silver Saab station wagon with personalized California plates that read "DOESF."

James Kim is described as a 35-year-old Asian man, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 150 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. Kati Kim is described as a 30-year-old white woman with brown hair and hazel eyes. She is 5 feet 7 inches tall and 125 pounds.

Anyone with information about the Kims is urged to call Inspector Angela Martin with the San Francisco Police Department's missing persons unit at (415) 558-5508. After hours, callers can contact the Police Department's operation center at (415) 553-1071.

Photos of the Kim family can be found on the Police Department's Web site at http://www.sfgov.org/police.

San Francisco Police were looking for information on a family missing since the Thanksgiving weekend that was last seen in Portland.

S.F. detectives said James Kim, his wife Kati, and their children Penelope and Sabine took a trip to Seattle for the holiday.

They were supposed to return home on Tuesday, but co-workers became concerned Wednesday when the couple did not show up for appointments.

Police said friends and family knew them to usually keep in daily contact.

They were driving a 2005 silver Saab station wagon with California personalized plates of “DOESF.

According to San Francisco station KNTV, the family was last seen having brunch in Portland on Saturday, and announced plans to head to Gold Beach on the Oregon Coast.

Portland Police so far had no record of the case. San Francisco Police were investigating.

It doesn't take long to get out of cell phone range in the NW. I spend alot of time in the Tahuya Forest, adjacent to Belfair. No coverage there, or many places just as close in.

The Tin Foil Hat Clan has been successfully fighting these brainwave reading creatures from outer space for years, much to the angst of their pursuers, who often pose as lost or injured hikers, equestrians, or ORV enthusiasts.

How strange. I looked up Gold Beach, as I'm not familiar with the area at all, and it is way back south, towards San Francisco - about 300 miles south of Portland.

Doesn't *sound* like Seattle was part of the plan at all. And that's a whole lot of land to cover between Portland and Gold Beach. Not looking good, that's for sure. Prayers for the Kim family.

Probably "Does Science Fiction". SF is the traditional purist's term for the genre, not "sci fi".

I'm not far from Gold Beach. Temperate weather, and no reports of slides or road blockages recently. It's about four or five hours to Portland and no major passes in between. The coast road (as opposed to I5) can be tricky. But seldom if ever icy. Even in Portland the weather that was so bad in Washington, wasn't much there. The Seattle area where it was bad, is five or six hours north of Portland.

I had the same question.
A little digging shows Doe SF is an artsy store in San Francisco where Kim lives.

A little more digging shows James Kim is the administrative contact for their web site.
