Didn't think of that. I hadn't heard about the obviously horrific weather there. News media not reporting it or did I miss something?

Expensive, but there are satelite telephones.

Some expensive new cars ( On- star with GM ?... etc. ) have the hardware installed at the factory.

It has been major - but, I only knew about Seattle. Don't know anything about Oregon's weather or if they had the same snowstorms - sounds like they did.

How strange. I looked up Gold Beach, as I'm not familiar with the area at all, and it is way back south, towards San Francisco - about 300 miles south of Portland.

Doesn't *sound* like Seattle was part of the plan at all. And that's a whole lot of land to cover between Portland and Gold Beach. Not looking good, that's for sure. Prayers for the Kim family.

what's DOESF mean? Do ESF?

Probably "Does Science Fiction". SF is the traditional purist's term for the genre, not "sci fi".

Duh, never mind. When I read DOESF I thought I saw two S's.

I'm not far from Gold Beach. Temperate weather, and no reports of slides or road blockages recently. It's about four or five hours to Portland and no major passes in between. The coast road (as opposed to I5) can be tricky. But seldom if ever icy. Even in Portland the weather that was so bad in Washington, wasn't much there. The Seattle area where it was bad, is five or six hours north of Portland.

>>what's DOESF mean? Do ESF?<<

I had the same question.
A little digging shows Doe SF is an artsy store in San Francisco where Kim lives.

A little more digging shows James Kim is the administrative contact for their web site.

I noticed something odd - he's editor of CNEt but hasn't logged into the web site in two weeks, nine days before he was last seen.

As I hear it, 410 (White River) is still okay, but that's just what I hear, not what I can verify.

Prayers for the Kim family.

They could be slid off the road somewhere.

Yep, in Florida when people mysteriously disappear and they were last seen in their car, it's usually because they've driven into a lake or canal.

This is the 2nd weird missing Asian guy with a white wife and small child out of SF story that I know of. There was another unsolved one about a year ago too.

The wife and child did not go missing, but he did. They've never found him.

Hmmm.

I am a bit confused here, were they heading from SF through GOld Beach to Portland and then Seatlle, or, did they go to Portland and then down to Gold Beach and pland to head down to SF from there? If that was the case, the higway down the coast of Oregon can be a bit tricky at times, having driven it during teh summer in perfect weather.

I understand that the recent storms around Lincoln City ripped the highway and terrain to peices, with Lincoln City itself cut-off from Salem..(HIghway 18 closed).

Unfortunately it sounds like a traffic accident, going off a cliff or ravine.

If the family were going from Portland to Seattle, the going there isn't too bad, major higway 5...

We can only hope and pray...

I wonder what he really knows about this. I bet the husband is involved somehow.

Oops read too fast I guess his is missing too. What reason would they have to disappear. Begin a new life? Did he do something illegal and trying to disappear before the activity is brought to light? I guess I am a cynic after watching Without a Trace. lol.

As I said in my earlier post, I don't think Seattle was really the destination at all; I think Portland was. They left SF on Fri., 11/24 and were expected in Gold Beach on Sat., 11/25, after having arrived in Portland.

Gold Beach is between SF and Portland, so they had gotten to Portland and turned around to head home.

Here are a couple more snippets of media articles to add to what is in the stories already posted:

~~~~
" ... The family made two phone calls to a Gold Beach hotel last Saturday, the second call at 5:45 p.m., Detective Angela Martin of the San Francisco police department told KGW-TV in Portland.
According to police, the family reportedly asked the hotel clerk to leave a key outside since they would be arriving late that night.
The phone call was the last reported contact with the family. The Gold Beach hotel did leave keys out for the Kim family but the keys were still there the next morning, KGW reported.
....
[CNET co-workers - repeat of statement about usually being in contact by phone or email]
"We're all upset," said co-worker Sarah Cain.
Kati Kim's father, Phil Fleming, who lives in New Mexico, said he and his wife are waiting by the phone for news.
"I don't know if there's much we can do right now but stay at home base," Fleming told KGW-TV. ..."
