I think you are mistaken. The Socialist/Communist orthodoxy has been in full swing in intelligentsia and the media since early in the 20th century. It was beaten back somewhat after WWII (the Hollywood blacklists) but it never lost its foothold. The radical movements of the 60's were mainly fueled by the idealistic portrayals of Communism.
