Ségolène Royal, the French presidential candidate, was embroiled in a damaging row on a visit to the Middle East yesterday after appearing to condone a Hezbollah MP who denounced US insanity and compared Israel to the Nazis.
Ms Royal, the first woman with a realistic chance of winning the French presidency, was struggling to extricate herself from the controversy sparked by a meeting in Beirut with MPs, including Ali Ammar of Hezbollah.
In a 20-minute tirade Mr Ammar attacked unlimited American insanity for sending troops into Afghanistan and Iraq. He then said that Israeli Nazism was no better than Hitlers Third Reich.
Ms Royal, who is on her first overseas trip since winning the Socialist Party primary, replied: Thank you for being so frank. I agree with a lot of the things you have said, notably your analysis of the US.
Her remark provoked a furore in France, where Philippe Douste-Blazy, the Foreign Minister, said that she had a simplistic vision of the Middle East. François Goulard, the Research Minister, said: Ségolène Royal obviously doesnt know what shes talking about.
Ms Royal was trying to limit the damage last night. She said that her interpreter had failed to translate Mr Ammars comparison between Israel and the Nazis. If he had, she would have walked out, she said.
Ms Royal went on to claim that she had not meant to attack Americans in general for insanity but only the Bush Administration over the war in Iraq.

Ping!
Every time I think I might be going a little hard on the French...
If there's one other nation besides Germany that may want to avoid talking about nazis, it's france.
Regards, Ivan
Sounds like she has the youth vote sewn up.
I wish US libs were as honest.
She said that her interpreter had failed to translate Mr Ammars comparison between Israel and the Nazis.
OPTIMIST:Yeah, it's kinda like messing up the punch line of a a joke....
Right, Mr. Kerry?
I have to doubt that her interpreter was incompetent (or dishonest) as she suggests. Therefore, I think she's lying.
In addition, I don't think being anti-Jew is an electoral handicap in france. Only the appearance of it is a political liability. She probably won't lose a single vote over this.
Recall Hillary Clinton's embrace of Suha Arafat, right after Suha made the "blood libel" accusations against the Israeli Jews. In New York, a state crawling with Jews, none of that hurt her a bit in her Senate campaign.
Ribbit...ribbit...ribbit...
These guys vascillate between saying Hitler was a very bad guy and claiming the Holocaust never happened. .....whatever suits their rhetoric at the time.
Nor did the numerous allegations (from reputable folks) of her making anti-Semitic statements throughout her life. Hillary could do everything but lead a neo-Nazi parade and leftist Jews would vote for her.
I'm sure Ms Royal won't take it personally, if I make a connection between French & retreat in her attempted backpedal.
If Israel is the same as nazi Germany, why haven't the Israelis invaded France?
Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.
Come on, honey, tell the truth. John Kerry's been advising you, hasn't he?
Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.
hilaryclinton kissing suhaarafat redux.
Peace, love, dove...
hilaryrodham was an early supporter of the PLO.....long before Arafat became acceptable in polite LIBERAL society.
Of COURSE she thinks Americans are Nazis--or Capitalist Pigs if you prefer--and that Bush is a Texas cowboy (dirty word, for the French), and that America is the Great Satan.
I'm of the view that it won't hurt her chances for election a bit. Of course she has to make a mock apology, for diplomatic cover, but it would be suprising if she's the least bit sorry she said it.
For what seems like the thousandth time on FreeRepublic, that's a fricken myth.
It hurt her a lot. So much that she should have lost.
In her first election she received 52-53% of the Jewish vote. That is death for state wide Democrat candidates in NYS where a winning Democrat gets near 75% of the Jewish vote. Less then that, when a Republican got a significant amount of Jewish votes, Republicans (D'Amato, Pataki) won.
She won because of unusual support from White Catholics.
In this 2006 election I don't know but I assume she got the usual Jewish vote. She has been acting as the perfect pro Israel NY US Senator.
The correct question is:
If the Israelis are the same as Nazi germany, why hasn't France surrendered to them?
Don't you mean the "youth" vote?
You're right. I forgot the quotes! :)
<< hilaryrodham was an early supporter of the PLO.....long before Arafat became acceptable in polite LIBERAL society. >>
Missus Clinton and her gang are as dangerous to America's and to Judeo-Christian/Western/Human Civilization as are the collectivized forces of islamanazism.
BUMPping
Why are there trees along the Champs Elysées?
So the IDF can march in the shade.
<< ... She has been acting .... >>
And woefully poorly and patently obviously, at that.
And yet New York's millions of criminal aliens still vote for her.
The political left does the same thing in this country. Invariably sides with the bad guys.
Boredom, the Israelis like at least a bit of a challenge.
Why don't the people of France who lived during the Nazi occupation, you know, the ones ... WE LIBERATED! ... come out and call this woman an idiot? GOOD GRIEF!
Why isn't there a single Republican with the guts to call for severing ties to France?
Yeah, blame it on the translator. How typically patrician of her. LOL!
Royal: Well, I agreed with his statement before I didn't.
Surely a Kerryism.
Why isn't there a single Republican with the guts to call for severing ties to France?
They took French in high school and like Perrier too much?
Never sever the ties that wine you!
Anti-semitism has never been a negative in French politics.
The problem here is she shows her lack of foreign policy knowledge and experience. She is Hillary in a chicer pantsuit.
"hilaryrodham was an early supporter of the PLO.....long before Arafat became acceptable in polite LIBERAL society"
And it hasn't hurt her one bit.
Kissing Suha Arafat and calling people f*ing Jew bastards hasn't hurt her one bit either.
The New York Jews are also busy buying Mercedes and BMW cars.
Notwithstanding that, Hillary has now won the NY Senate seat twice in a row and handily. No squeakers. Her bizarre appearance with Suha may have lost her some NY Jewish votes, but it failed to stop her. If she tries running for president, that will be her Waterloo. Americans do not like her.
LOL I know, but I think she must figure that those of us who were "stupid" enough to vote for him won't have the capability to put it all together like that. It's like she's patting us on our little heads with a soft platitude, so we'll go play while the grown ups can talk about important worldly things.
This is like comparing apples to fish, I dont see the Isralies opening death camps for Muslims.
I have observed that the two characteristics go together quite well.
I am sure such things help her immensely among the moonbat left, although I have heard moonbats complain that she is not radical enough. Why, to them, Hillary is some sort of a "moderate." That is scary.
Sounds like she'd get along with Nancy Pelosi quite well.
PBear
LOL. I interact w/foreign nationals quite a bit. A few years back one of them told me I wasn't being 'cosmopolitan' enough w/my hatred of the French. I don't give a rat's rear end about the French, their food, their culture, their inability to stand up for what's right, or for their own freakin' government in the face of Dhimmitude. Screw 'em.
And why habven't the French surrendered?
Not this white Catholic.
