Iran: Parliament shortens Ahmadinejad's term
YNET NEWS ^ | December 3, 2006 | Dudi Cohen

Vast majority of Iranian lawmakers vote to move up presidential elections by 18 months, final say on matter up to Ahmadinejad's arch-rival.

Will Ahmadinejad's term be cut short? The Iranian parliament voted on Sunday to unite the presidential elections with the upcoming parliamentary ones, this according to the official Iranian news agency.

The proposal, which passed with a surprising 80 percent majority, may cut the term of sitting President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad by 18 months.

The bill must still be ratified by the Iranian constitutional committee, which is headed by former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Ahmadinejad's arch-rival, a fact which many see as indicative that the bill will indeed be authorized.

Rafsanjani himself is considered one of the most powerful politicians in Iran and is currently running for a position in the Assembly of Experts, an 86-strong body of ayatollahs who monitor the Iranian Supreme Leader (a position currently held by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei). The Assembly has the power to dismiss the Supreme Leader. Already existing tensions have heightened between Ahmadinejad and Rafsanjani as the latter is pitted directly against Ahmadinejad's spiritual mentor Masbah Yazdi who is also vying for a spot on the Assembly of Experts.

One of the reasons cited in the proposal for bringing the two elections together is cutting the costs brought on by a double election. Opponents to the bill claimed that cutting the president's term is unconstitutional and that parliament's term should be extended to meet the original date for the presidential election.

An interesting development?>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Ameananutjob is now preparing to cozy up to the Democrats, after the Dec 6 report in released

He has written an open letter to the American people

Bush is entertaining the idea of talks with Syria and Iran, and the Mullahs shirk in abject horror.

This is not what the Mullahs want, they want a WAR in which the Madhi will appear. All this cushy plan to negotiate is not on their menu.

So now they want an even bigger megalomaniac than Ameananutjob. They are supplying Iranian arms to Muqtada Al Sadrs Iraqi Al MAdhi Army directly from their arms factories without black marketing them. The Saudis are pi$$ed.

The Iranian people have little to do with it.The Saudis are on the march and mean to carry the battle to the Shiites in Iraq, because the USA will not. The Saudis are angry and hold the trump card of barring the Iranians from pilgramage ( Haj) to Mecca. Or killing the Haji Iranians on the way by the thousands. This has the Mullahs worried and in a tizzy. So they want no truck with the Western Dems. They need a new man who can placate the Saudis, and at the same time keep feeding arms to Muqtada Al Sadr. The Saudis mean to assassinate Muqtada, and they likely will, with the help of Jordan. That is why Al Maliki ran away after meeting with the King of Jordan, and did not meet with President Bush. He got the black spot when he shook hands with the King of Jordan. The Muslim jig is up. The Saudis are on the war path, whether the US wants it or not.

Glad to see you know about "stinky."

He went bonkers when an opponent called him that. LOL

He knows we're leaving Iraq in 07' and might as well deal with Iran before we come home.

Huh? He did meet with President Bush. They had a breakfast meeting on Thursday and then held a joint press availability in Amman, Jordan.

Hmm, let me guess... the next guy will be "moderate" and "somebody we can work with". Can we send Jimmuh Carter to verify the elections?

Best news I've heard all day. Maybe we all won't get blown up in the next few years. Maybe I'll win a million dollars and sip margaritas on the beach for the rest of my life. Maybe the liberals will stop backing mass murdering sociopathic dictators. Yeah, right...

As the next parliamentary elections are scheduled for February 2008, but the next presidential elections for June 2009, the new bill would reduce the four-year presidential term of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad by almost one and a half years.

Can we do the same to Hillary if she manages to get elected?

It really doesn't matter which of the Khomeinists winds up running the Islamic Republic. Iran will have the bomb well before then.

I think they are more scared of the USA.

If they were, they'd not have allowed a bunch of college students (Ahmanutjob among them) to take over a US embassy and hold a bunch of our diplomats hostage for 444 days in the late 1970's.

Smart move by the Iranian parliament (and probably the Iranian religious leadership).

Many freepers kindly helped to get a FRhomepage organized on Internet Explorer and Safari. It should look organized, now.

There's a whole lot of wishful commentary going on. The Iranian Parliament only wants to syncronize the presidential election there with their parliamentary elections.

And a more "moderate" Iranian president is likely to be a more dangerous one.

Now there's an absolutely phony reason. The cost of an election is probably a day's worth of oil revenues.

I think that if they cut his term short, Ahmadinejad can always be Chairman for the DNC.

British Peers shocked by extent of rights abuses in Iran

Monday, 04 December 2006

NCRI – On November 28, the representative office of the National Council of Resistance of Iran in London organized a press conference at the House of Commons on the human rights situation in Iran.

Two video clips of public hangings in Qazvin and Boroujerd were shown which had taken place in recent months.

Lord Alton of Liverpool chaired the conference attended by Lord Waddington, former Conservative Home Secretary; Baroness Gould; Hossein Abedini, member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the NCRI; and Nasser Zia’i whose parents were murdered by the mullahs’ regime owing to their support to the People’s Mojahedin of Iran when he was only one year old.

Lord Alton said that the appalling human rights record of this regime has led to its condemnation by various UN bodies for 53 times. He expressed regret that the situation had deteriorated since Ahmadinejad became the mullahs' president.

Nasser Zia’i, a young victim of cruelty in Iran spoke about his painful experience when his parents were murdered. He called on the audience who where shocked by his story to condemn human rights violations in Iran and denounce international community's inaction in face of crimes committed by the mullahs. “How many people have to die like my mother and my father before the world decides to react?” he asked. “After all these people who have died so far, isn’t it time to do something?”

Then two films were shown on recent public hangings in the towns of Qazvin and Boroujerd that supporters of the Iranian Resistance managed to smuggle out of the country. The horrifying films further revealed the nature of this medieval regime and the extent of brutality in Iran.

On the dreadful scenes of hanging of young people in Iran, Lord Waddington said that he had never seen anything like them in his entire life. During past 27 years, the ruling mullahs have executed more than 120,000 members and supporters of the PMOI and the Iranian Resistance, which is shocking, he said. He further stressed that it was a shameful decision by the British government and other EU member states to have unfairly labelled the People’s Mojahedin as terrorist just to please mullahs' regime suppressive regime.

Lord Waddington ended up by saying that in his view there was no doubt that all the sacrifices made to bring freedom and democracy to Iran would eventually bear fruit. He regretted that in the West it had been for a long time that instead of helping the Resistance, governments had created obstacles on its path. He emphasized that it was time to remove the terrorist label from the People’s Mojahedin and the West had to side with the people against the mullahs’ regime.

Baroness Gould, Labour member of the House of Lords, said that it was necessary to show those films in a plenary session of the Parliament and everywhere else so that everybody can see the true nature of the mullahs.

As the last speaker, Hossein Abedini reiterated that it was high time for the regime’s human rights dossier to be referred to the UN Security Council and that its leaders were tried for their crimes against humanity in an international tribunal. This regime, he added, does not deserve to be a member of the International Community.
