Local radio stations may go Spanish (Air America going off in Boston)

Boston may soon have a new Spanish-language radio station as WKOX-AM drops its liberal talk format, sources said.

The progressive talk currently heard on WKOX-AM (1200) and WXKS-AM (1430), including Air America Radio, is being dropped in favor of a Spanish-language format sometime in the beginning of next year, several sources said.

WKOX and WXKS, which are owned by Clear Channel Communications, air syndicated talk shows from the Jones Radio Network and from the bankrupt Air America Radio network.

Station officials confirmed the liberal talk format will be discontinued, but were mum on what will take its place.

But sources with knowledge of the change said a Spanish-language format is in the works. The number of Spanish-language stations across the country has grown rapidly as programmers, led by Clear Channel, flip to Spanish formats. Clear Channel has reportedly launched Spanish stations in 28 markets since 2004.

The change in format comes as Clear Channel plans to boost WKOX’s power to 50,000 watts. Right now the station simulcasts on WKOX, which can only reach 10,000 watts, and WXKS-AM, which reaches a height of 5,000 watts. WKOX will likely be able to reach 50,000 watts by August, station officials said yesterday.

Private equity firms Thomas H. Lee Partners and Bain Capital agreed to buy Clear Channel last month for $19 billion.

Layoffs were made this week at WKOX’s sister stations on the FM dial WXKS-FM (Kiss 108)and WJMN-FM (JAM’N 94.5).

And down in Providence, lib talker Arlene Violet is leaving WHJJ 920--to be replaced by Sean Hannity. WHJJ once dumped
its conservative lineup to go to Air America and its ratings plummeted. The program director came out and said "The
Air America experiment has been a failure."

WJAR-TV:

Talk-radio icon Arlene Violet has been let go by her station, WHJJ-AM (920) after more than 16 years on the air. Her last day on the air will be Thursday. The station announced that she will be replaced Monday in her 3 to 6 p.m. time slot by a syndicated program featuring conservative commentator Sean Hannity. Violet, a former Catholic nun and Rhode Island attorney general from 1985 to 1987, announced her departure to her audience on her show this afternoon.

That leftists have been the biggest backers of open door border policy makes this all the more hilarious.

Providence's WHJJ 920 is also adding Mark 'Get Off The Phone Ya Big Jerk' Levin, 6-8 pm right after Hannity.

Bush is a lame duck. The Dems have recaptured the Legislature. Nancy Pelosi is Speaker of the House.

You would think this would be a perfect storm rising Air America and liberal talk radio to the heights. And you would be wrong.

Air America's going off in Boston??!! I didn't even know it was on here . . . you mean I missed the whole thing? I might have tuned in out of morbid curiosity if I'd known it was there . . . . Well, maybe not . . . . ;-)

Difference is that AAR was paying a half a million to air on the LA station.

It was coming for a while, AAR is off the air in Davenport Iowa as of Tuesday;

AAR is now leaving stations they no longer have on their webpage, so at this time their real affiliate count is a mystery. They'll also lose a few on Saturday when Jerry Springer's show goes away.

Friday is the end of the extension of the extended deadline for ARR's bankruptcy. If they survive expect to be hit over the head and neck with reports by the media that it's one of the greatest triumphs in human history, even though they're bleeding affiliates no matter what happens. I bet they're keeping that news from the judge.

Tomorrow could bring another extension, or chapter 7. I think what's holding up the bailout is the potential buyers are trying to grab the few assets without any of the liabilities. The buyer's plan is probably to continue on the same course that got AAR where it is now. Only a moron would approve that.

The more AAR retreats (so immediately after the 2006 election), the more blatantly obvious it becomes they were a shell organization created to propagandize for the 2006 elections, skirting campaign finance law.

Soros, et al, saw an unregulated pathway to advertise the democratic agenda. Look for the shutters to be fully installed within a few months, you'd suppose.

yes, and on a lib board I trespassed on, when I brought that up they said "oh, the Providence station only carried two
AAR shows--they weren't really an affiliate". Yet AAR
considers a station an affiliate if they only have ONE
show, and they were listing one station in Montpelier VT
that had NO shows! The "AAR Experiment" statement came
when they dumped Franken. They kept Rhodes on for awhile.
Then replaced her with--Michael Savage!
