Brother of OU bomber charged again
Tulsa World ^ | 12/06/06 | Correspondent reports

DENVER -- The brother of a University of Oklahoma student who blew himself up outside the OU football stadium last year has been charged with threatening a second FBI agent.

The additional charge against Thomas Carlisle "Tom" Hinrichs of Colorado Springs is contained in an indictment that was made public Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Denver.

Hinrichs originally was charged Nov. 21 with threatening during Nov. 15-16 interrogations to assault or murder an FBI agent identified only as "Todd" in Colorado Springs.

The new charge alleges that Hinrichs threatened in an Oct. 12 telephone call to "bury" William Burruel, another FBI agent in Colorado Springs.

Hinrichs, 25, is the brother of Joel "Joe" Hinrichs III, who was 21 when he died Oct. 1, 2005, from the blast of a bomb he was carrying outside a packed Oklahoma Memorial Stadium during a football game.

His father later said his son was severely depressed.

The day after the bomb death, the FBI began investigating Tom Hinrichs as a domestic terrorism suspect as part of a broad probe to determine whether Joe Hinrichs' death was an isolated event, a federal law enforcement source

said Nov. 21.

The investigation of Tom Hinrichs was closed April 17, but an FBI court affidavit says the FBI and Colorado Springs police asked Burruel to monitor Hinrichs' behavior monthly "to ensure that he was not a danger to himself or others."

The affidavit says that on Oct. 12, Hinrichs told Burruel, "Your blowing smoke at me, I'm fed up . . . I will . . . bury you."

Colorado Springs police arrested Tom Hinrichs on Nov. 15 for allegedly assaulting his father, Joel Hinrichs Jr., 62, of Colorado Springs.

Authorities said Tom Hinrichs had an assault rifle, two boxes of ammunition and a military helmet when they arrested him.

He remains in custody in that city on a state-court charge pertaining to the alleged assault, according to a new court filing by a federal prosecutor.

Hopefully this article from the Tulsa World has not already been posted. The Tulsa World had this buried at the bottom of the back page of yesterday's World. This raises a lot of questions.

I still say there is much, much more to this event than we have ever been told. This story adds to my suspicion.

The story of the suicide bombing (which is what it was) won't ever be told because it violates to many PC rules.

If the he's mixed up in his Islamist brother's plots, the FBI should be 'hounding' him to get to the bottom of whatever was behind the failed OU attack, but really: ". . .I'll bury you," at the end of a exaspirated tirade won't pass muster as a threat under any of the versions of true-threat doctrine set forth by the various courts of appeals.

Amazing. And I definitely agree. There is so much more to this that was covered up. Wish I knew why.

Someone is trying to destroy the X.500 Directory Services protocol?

(Sorry, couldn't resist a bad techie joke.)

No joke. There is something very, very wrong in that family.

Probably not. It sounds like the FBI is using that as leverage to try to get something from him - or possibly from someone else.

But this was such a nice family! (sarcasm)

All I can say is that those of us who were at the stadium that night were very fortunate and when some say God is a Sooner, that night they were right because that is the only explanation for the lack of loss of human life except for the bomber that night.

The kid was no lone suicide bomber who was just mad at football. He was out to kill people that night and thanks to security for cars entering the oval, we avoided a major disaster according to sources here.

I would suggest that perhaps Joel Hinrichs was both depressed and a terrorist. One does not preclude the other.

In fact, it is standard Islamabomber SOP to prey on the outcast or the mentally weak in order to recruit suicide bombers. If you are going to try to convince somebody to blow themselves up with a bunch of innocent civilians, you have a big head start if you begin with somebody who wants to kill themselves in the first place.

What a messed up family.

I bet they start every reunion with "now put that down!"

The press treatment of what was clearly a Muslim-inspired suicide bombing attempt is of greater concern than the actions of this loonie, though.

Whatever the source of that kid's motivations, and whoever else might have been helping/assisting/motivating him, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind he planned to go into that stadium that night.

Yes, that's what all the media reported--that they were such a NICE family, and what a tragedy yada yada. It's starting to look like the public will never know the facts of that event--but most people, just like some of us here, really don't buy the "suicide" story.

Nothing is known for certain (by the public, at least), but there is plenty of circumstantial evidence that he did have contacts with active Muslims in Norman. Whether those contacts included radical Islamists is another question.

Meanwhile, according to this story, the FBI started investigating his brother for terrorism connections THE DAY AFTER THE BOMBING. We sure didn't hear anything about that at the time, did we?
