Phone Senators this morn -- Cornyn SKIL Act giant increase in foreign workers ready to pass
YOU'VE STOPPED EVERY OTHER IMMIGRATION DISASTER THIS YEAR ...
... NOW STOP THIS LAST ATTEMPT BEFORE CONGRESS GOES HOME
Please phone the congressional leaders listed below and urge them:
"Do NOT entertain debate on Sen. Cornyn's H-1B bill. Oppose all increases in H-1B visas."
Capitol Switchboard 202-224-3121
By the time you wake up later this morning and read this, Sen. Cornyn (R-TX) will be well on his way to ramming through a bill to radically increase foreign workers in the tech, nursing, physical therapy, science and engineering fields.
Believe me, the only way to defeat this last-minute desperation attempt by Robber Baron Tech Corporations to keep wages low is if Senate offices are stunned today by the public outcry against this disreputable maneuver.
A swarm of Microsoft lobbyists -- surely reeking of the musty odor of giant wads of campaign contributions -- buzzed and stang their way through Senate offices Wednesday, demanding that they and others of their ilk be given hundreds of thousands more foreign workers next year.

Unfortunately, the US isn't producing enough qualified tech people. Our game players can easily beat theirs, though.
I thought you all were against "illegal" immigration. I guess you want to stop legal immigration of those with professional degrees as well? That is just stupid.
"Unfortunately, the US isn't producing enough qualified tech people. "
Kids swarmed to tech jobs during the tech boom. Colleges expanded their programs. Then American businesses started offshoring. Of course someone with a computer science degree can always retrain, right?
So now, kids are smart enough to stay away from jobs that can be shipped offshore. But now, it's difficult to offshore 100% of the jobs. Domestic production is cratered, so we import talent.
A benefit of free market?
"Unfortunately, the US isn't producing enough qualified tech people"
Sure we are. Or nearly enough. Companies always say "shortage" because that's profitable. They are not in the truth business but the money-making business. If the populace gets restive they hire some opinion makers to spew out "conventional wisdom."
"I guess you want to stop legal immigration of those with professional degrees as well?"
How about not providing businesses with incentive to go out and get cheaper foreign labor and import it for domestic use?
I disagree, although I do wish it were otherwise. The number of US college students studying in a tech field is quite small when compared to those in liberal arts or other such fields.
We need educated, qualified people in this country so the jobs don't go offshore.
Exactly. And if we aren't producing enough to meet demand, I see no problem importing the balance.
Needless to say, the USA has no shortage of lawyers, management consultants, or government employees.
1. These aren't illegal workers.
2. American companies need to compete in a global market. If these companies can't hire h-1b's, they'll be forced to move projects overseas.
Needless to say, the USA has no shortage of lawyers, management consultants, or government employees.
And we'll have even more government employees to cover the staffing needs created by ill-advised "swarm" tactics like these.
"And I am a software engineer. Told the asshat that I will mobilize the vote against him and that will be his last term in office."
He is totally unafraid. US politicians count on two things:
#1 - Americans have tragically short memories and attention spans. He'll bet that you forget about this. And if you do remember, you will be like most and simply complain without taking action.
#2 - If the assumptions of #1 fail, he will have enhanced his personal wealth through lobbyists and other less than ethical means such that he won't need the stinkin' job.
Either I'm cynical, or a realist, but I don't think I'm wrong.
"Exactly. And if we aren't producing enough to meet demand, I see no problem importing the balance."
And we'll continue down the road to national suicide until we realize we're dealing with PEOPLE, not resources, or assets, or human capital.
If you spend 4-6 years training for a job and find that while it was a hot commodity when you started your education, you can't find a job when you finish... how many will follow in your footsteps? This is a place where government has to have a role... for national financial health, as well as national security.
Unless you're comfortable with having the Chinese engineer our next generation of weapons? I'm sure they would never compromise our security if we're paying them, right? I mean, is there anything more valuable than money? No, of course not.
Amen.
"You are right... but it is still my duty as his constitute to tell him that I will no longer be voting for him if he proceeds."
I hate being right about such things. And you're right, doing something is better than doing nothing.
That's a nice story. Thanks.
If that's the case, there doesn't appear to be much difference to the American employee if the employer hires a foreigner to move here, just so he won't send the job over there. The job might as well have moved, since it has been filled by a foreign employee.
