CHICAGO (AP) - A man was arrested Friday by federal agents on charges of planning to set off hand grenades in garbage cans at a shopping mall. Derrick Shareef, 22, of Rockford, was arrested when he met with an undercover agent in a parking lot to trade a set of stereo speakers for four hand grenades and a handgun. Federal officials said he planned to set off four hand grenades in garbage cans at the CherryVale shopping mall in Rockford, about 90 miles northwest of Chicago. He was charged with one count of attempting to damage or destroy a building by fire or explosion and one count of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. Federal officials said that in September, Shareef became acquainted with a witness who was cooperating with the FBI and confided to him that he wanted to commit acts of ``violent jihad,'' as well as other crimes.

I read the whole affidavit on Smoking Gun. This guy was definitely a practicing Muslim (he mentions his Mosque and also uses several Islamic phrases) who wanted to commit terrorist acts against the United States. The attack he was planning was definitely terrorism, including a goodbye Martyr video.

From the sound of it, he was a lone wolf. For example, to get the money to buy the grenades, he was first going to ask his sister. He ends up trading a pair of stereo speakers. Not exactly a well-oiled machine when it comes to planning.

Scanning the affadavit the FBI agent filed for this mope's arrest warrant, he would appear to be a prison convert. Might want to take a closer look at the Islamic chaplains in the Illinois prison system.

I didn't say that the carnage wouldn't be terrible... Words mean something. Until recently, WMD referred to "chemical, biological, or nuclear." By this definition, we've found tens of thousands of tons of "WMDs" in Iraq...

This is yet another case of words having thei meaning stripped in order to accomplish some sort of political ends.

I was just listening to a guy on the radio, he being seemingly about my same age (60).

The subject was the "evil" in the country and in the world these days. He mentioned that he lived in Milwaukee back in the 50's. He said that one year there were only two murders in his city. He also noted that there are over 100 now.

I guess you can make quite adequate guesses as to why that is.

But be assured, there are tragedies every day in this country. There needn't be a jihadist to make it happen. Remember we had the 'Great Society' and we have 'The War on Drugs' ....... courtesy of the good old (tragic) Federal government.
