Sen. John Kerry, whose botched joke about U.S. troops in Iraq dealt a blow to his presidential ambitions, will travel to Iraq this weekend to meet with soldiers, political leaders and military officials.
"I've talked to plenty of guys who've come back from Iraq, who are there now, who understand exactly what happened," Kerry said of his joke in a telephone interview Tuesday with The Associated Press. "They laugh at it."
The Iraq stop will be part of a nine-day Mideast trip that includes stops in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Israel.
A week before the midterm elections, Kerry told a group of California students that individuals who don't study hard and do their homework would likely "get stuck in Iraq." He said he meant to say "get us stuck in Iraq," but the botched joke intended to criticize President Bush forced the senator to apologize and then lay low for the remaining days of the campaign.
The Massachusetts senator, who was widely criticized for the quip, said he'd be happy to apologize to any soldiers he encounters in Iraq who don't understand what happened.
"For anybody who misunderstood (the joke) or got only the White House presentation of it, I'd apologize, obviously," he said.

Yeah, they totally understand that Jon Carey is a dufus.
Yeah, Right. Either you are lying Jon Cary, or they are laughing at YOU and your lame excuse.
OH I'm sure they will find a Kerry friendly to chum it up with the sick SOB good for all kinds of quotes and photos.
Just wonder if anyone who chums it up with this filth will be able to look a fellow service person in the eye afterwards.
don't our soldiers have enough to endure without this? and during the Christmas season? they should give bonus pay to whoever has to be in his detail.
"They laugh at it."
"It" is an interesting way to describe yourself.
everyone understood exactly what he said and what he meant.
kerry has yet to understand that his quick "revise and extend" remarks routine isn't working and isn't going to, no matter how many times he repeats it.

WTH is HE doing going to Syria? Lebanon is bad enough..but Syria??/
This is why our foreign policy gets so screwed up...you have the dems socializing with the enemy..surely telling thme how rotten Pres. Bush is...but, just wait until THEY are in power..they will take care of Assad..
Kerry ought to wear one of those powdered wigs.
Wow. I wonder how long it took to find a few soldiers who would meet with this joke.
If I were him, I would stay away from anyone in or associated with the military in Iraq.
I am guessing that he won't be welcome.
A very necessary and helpful addition to this thread, STAR.
The pity of it is, they will have to treat him respectfully.
Just picturing carry and Dodd walking into the offices of the heads of these countries is enough to make me sick.
Dodd is a Castro and Chavez apologist...and we know that carry sent a "welcome me to the White House" letter, back in 2004, to Iran....
These two guys are gonna cause trouble for Prs. Bush...I betcha.
Can't wait to see the photos. Mr. "Don't-you-know-who-I-AM" will no doubt just have to play dress up again, to connect with the common folk, dontcha know. Maybe he'll ride around in a tank, looking like an emaciated Dukakis bobblehead, lol.
Or is he meeting with our soldiers this time?
Or he's making it up, or talking to these "deserters" like Sgt Patrick Hart, who should have an innie instead of an outie, because he is another word for a cat.
The world is going crazy. Those getting in the news are the least of us..I'm sorry I am eluding to crudeness, but, nothing explains kerry but CRUDE!
Dear God make it stop. Haven't the poor troops been through enough?
JOHN KERRY's suddenly going to Iraq this weekend is because this week...
KENNEDY drops support for a KERRY presidential run in '08
...just for the TV of it.
As KENNEDY himself prepares to appear on this Sunday's 'FoX News Sunday' News Interview program.
He is meeting with USA personnel isn't he? Or the enemy? You never know with him...
I guess we should be pinging all the Freepers who have family over there, or who are there themselves. Word should spread fast, so wherever he goes the troops will have time to "not feel good" enough to stand with forced smiles as this traitor uses them for his political photo op.
OH... He's meeting with ~our~ soldiers.
I guess that ~is~ news. ;-P
Let's hope the troops refuse to talk to him, to shake hands with him, refuse to make any sounds whatever not even dainty soft polite clapping when they are forced to endure one of his inane speeches.
Let him get the Silence treatment from the troops and let the press cover/report it to high heaven.
I'm not so sure. He was booed at a gathering of the troops recently. ;*)
Well, I've talked to my son who is over in Iraq and he understands exactly what Kerry said and meant as do all of the guys.
The picture says it all.
I just can't believe that this guy is so dense.
And God bless them, everyone. He isn't good enough to wipe their boots.
I wish they could turn their backs on him.
No comment that is acceptable on this forum.
Little more to say...................FRegards
I hope he takes his wife to impress the heads of state....
I hope he takes his wife to impress the heads of state....
What he really ought to wear is a hempen necktie.
"Sen. John Kerry, whose botched joke about U.S. troops in Iraq dealt a blow to his presidential ambitions..."
So it's a fact now that it was a "botched joke"?
He got a pocket full of diplomas from some diploma mill in his state to hand out.
Hannity & Colmes on Monday had Hannity's meeting with some US troops in Iraq during his recent trip there. One of the black officers Hannity spoke to took Kerry's remarks as an insult to the troops, and seemed to be saying that opinion was widely held.
What's the over/under on how many times Kerry is going to say, "You know I served in Vietnam"?
Thanks for the ping, and I agree with you.
It isn't lady like, for me to say what I really hope for.
"I've talked to plenty of guys who've come back from Iraq, who are there now, who understand exactly what happened,"
He just can't hide his superiority complex and his condescending attitude. So anyone who doesn't buy his fake story about a "botched joke", yeah, right, is just too stupid to get it. What happened to his "I APOLOGIZE TO NO ONE"....now that was probably what he really thought.
He'll probably spend he rest of his days thinking we were just all too beneath him to understand his greatness. What a close call that this preening poser almost made it to president.
