VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) A teenager clocked driving 142 mph because he didn't want to get home late has put the Subaru Impreza he was driving up for sale.
"Several people expressed an interest," said the teen's mother, Cindy Raap. "That kind of concerns me."
Brandon D. Raap, 16, faces speeding and misdemeanor reckless driving charges and could have his license suspended after being stopped at 12:40 a.m. Saturday along a rural stretch of U.S. 30, police said.
The parents said in a written statement that their son made a "horrible choice" when he took his passion for racing to a local highway.
"We are grateful that this story will end with severe legal punishment rather than deadly consequences," Dan and Cindy Raap wrote.
The Raaps released the statement to explain their son is a "wonderful young man" who wants to be a race car driver but made a mistake. They said he accepts the consequences of his actions.
The Raaps moved to Valparaiso in July from Colorado. Before the move, the Raaps wrote, Brandon took a defensive driving class and earned compliments on his driving from his teachers.
"This training gave us confidence in his ability to handle the car," Dan and Cindy Raap wrote.
Brandon Raap also planned to go to racing school next year. His mother, reached after releasing the statement, said she's not sure whether that will still happen.
"We haven't visited that at all," Cindy Raap said.
The Raaps said they want their son's experience to remind other youths of the responsibility they accept when they get on the road.
"We hope this publicity provides an opportunity for families to talk and set the expectations of their youth," they wrote.

Good for them, at least they aren't trying to justify his stupidity or try and shield him from the law. My mom once took me to the police station when she heard I was involved in something with some other kids one night. I still remember her dragging me by my hair through the door. The officer had a huge grin on his face when he heard her story and why we were there, sure made an impression on me, happened 30 years ago and I still remember it quite well.

I didn't realize a 16-year-old could sell a car.
Are minors allowed to enter into contracts?
That said, his parents should have put the car up for sale about two minutes after they got word of the 142.

"We hope this publicity provides an opportunity for families to talk and set the expectations of their youth," they wrote. It sure does. Don't let your kids drive or buy junk. We need to know the conditions, type of road, time of day, etc. to determine if this was really 'dangerous' (well beside the fact he was driving a Subaru). 140+ in a '68 Mustang Fastback on a straight country road late at night, not as dangerous. A Subaru, any Subaru, over 140+? That in itself is risky.

If he didn't have Z rated tires, he was taking a real risk.
The issue is not the speed. The issue is you cannot manuver a vehicle at those speeds unless you are really good.
I've done 120+ on the interstate, but only to get away from a drunk. And I am a trained professional and my car was equipped to handle the speeds.

My first car was a 68 dodge coronet. I took it up to about 120 just to say I did it. I hit a bird, and the vents were open on the floor on both my side and the passenger. I still remember the puff of feathers that came in and startled me, causing me to swerve a little. got the heart beat going let me tell ya...

That Subaru Empreza goes for about $35,000 and has a top speed of 155 MPH. Where'd a 16-year old kid get something like that? Do mommy and daddy deserve "Dumbass" awards?

NASCAR needs this kid. He's a self-promoter and the next time he does 142+ in a car, it will be 100X safer and in somebody else's car. C'mon Mom, it's a no-brainer. Put this kid in racing school!

My buddy had a '77 Cutlass with a 455 in it (aftermarket.) Thing was held together with bondo, but he got it up to 150 and there was still room to go.
I will not ever ride in a car going that fast ever, ever again.

With all due respect, are you nuts? 140+ in a car with 40-year-old technology (even if it were brand new) is better than 140+ in a new track-worthy Subaru WRX? Ok, you take the 'stang and I'll take the Subaru and we'll see who lives longer!
No, I don't know the kid had a WRX but it seems like a good bet based on the context.

Exactly. I had a Camaro that would do 110, but not faster. If it would have gone faster, I may not be here to tell you about it.

Being originally from Indiana, why did they move from beautiful Colorado to fugly Northwest Indiana "The Region" ? I had family there at one time (grandmother & uncle/aunt). If somehow I ever move back to Indiana, that part would be the last place I would move to ! I would take Southern IN such as Bloomington/Lake Monroe.
The car the kid has - Subaru WRX, don't know if it a STi but I have a WRX, it is hard to keep my foot out of it as well !
I will be curious on what happens to the kid (the tickets) when all of this is done. In Indiana, it is easier to get tickets fixed versus here in Colorado.
To: mysterio
I had a '74 plymouth sports fury, that baby could cruise. "I got me a car as big as a whale". Of course it got about 7 mpg. Fastest I got it was 110. (I chickened out, was on interstate 80 in Iowa, back in '78)

Nah. Wiped out going 100+ on a motorcycle --- big bruise, but my helmet and full body kevlar/leather suit saved my arse, literally. (This was in my "seeking" days. LOL.)
That, and it occurred basically on a salt flat near Jal, New Mexico, so I didn't hit anything as I slid to a stop.

There are several flavors of the Suburu Impreza. The stock car is only good for maybe 110 mph. Then there is a WRX which adds a turbo and an additional 50 HP. Then there is the WRX STI (think Suburu version of a factory race tuned). That is a $35000 300 HP screamer that is almost track ready off the dealer's lot.

This reminds me years ago, my brother and our cousin went to some store called Harvey's in Warsaw, Indiana. They ended doing some shoplifting but got caught. Oh my Dad was furious ! My aunt didn't say much, left it to my Dad. It left an impression with him. The ironic thing, he never went back to that store.
When they got caught, they ended up at the police station and my Dad told them to do whatever they needed to do.

One's heavier than the other so it's less likely to go airborne. And having done it in a Mustang and just a little over a 100 in one of these new cars, yes I feel a lot safer in a old musclecar. Especially after looking at that little washing machine on wheels. 140 in that?!? The kid needs to be locked up on the principle he wasn't in his right mind. What's the turbo in it? Two extra hamsters?

I drove 125MPH on the Autobahn once. Believe it or not, it was in a VW Golf that I rented with some friends.
One time I was in my friends car (also on the Autobahn) while he was doing 130-140, and we were passed by a Porsche that was doing at least 160-170. That impressed me!

I have already warned all 3 of my kids not to run to me if they get caught doing something stupid and expect me to help them. I told them that their ear would be grabbed and taken to the police station by me, whether they were still attached would be completely up to them.
