Well put. I remember those times clearly (unfortunately) and have always thought that Ford has been underestimated by history. It took guts for him to pardon Nixon, but that was exactly the right thing to do at that time. The ultimate "time to move on".

I also thought he handled that crisis with North Korea very well.

President Ford was the recipient of the worst press coverage I can recall. The press constistently portrayed him as a bumbling idiot and took delight in highlighting his physical mishaps even though he was he most athletic president in history.

You can replace Ford with Bush and it sounds exactly the same.. The press hates anyone with an "R" after their name.

You got that right. His wife was a dancer when young. Ford was very athletic. I wish him the best. He has lived a long and full life, a good man who came along at the right time as a much needed transitional President who could calm the country down. And he did.

It's amazing how few Americans even know about those camps. America's "long nightmare" did indeed end, but Vietnam's continues.

Do you have a link to a good source for how many people were sent to and died in those camps? I'm making Christmas cookies right now (slacking on Free Republic while I wait for the dishwasher to finish) so don't have time to do much research.

For some reason, I hear the airhead reporters saying this verbatim. It's not like he's the oldest dead ex-president, so it seems redundant.

Nothing on the website from the local (Palm Springs area, where we and he live) paper about this yet. A quick driveby to Eisenhower Medical Center would probably reveal a few hints, however.

He's been in the hospital off and on many times this year and was apparently fitted with a pace maker in addition to having angioplasty performed. He's had stroke in the past and brushes with pneumonia.

Bottom line: he's old and we don't last for ever.

Thank you; I had forgotten that. In the very first election in which I voted, I'm proud to say that I voted for President Ford over that sanctimonious twit of a peanut farmer. I have always thought that Ford, a pragmatist, was treated shabbily by the media and press, following the same tired template that they do for all Republican presidents.

Literally dodged the bullet once and a near bullet (whacko dame with a .45 but not with a round in the chamber) another time. He's had some close one's I'll say. I will recall him for taking on the Khmer Rouge in the Gulf of Thailand over the SS Mayaguez even though Americans were sick and tired of conflict in Southeast Asia at that time.
