Former President Carter turned down a request to debate Alan Dershowitz about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying the outspoken Harvard law professor "knows nothing about the situation."
Carter, author of a new book advocating "peace not apartheid" in the region, said he will not visit Brandeis University to discuss the book because the university requested he debate Dershowitz.
"I don't want to have a conversation even indirectly with Dershowitz," Carter said in Friday's Boston Globe. "There is no need ... to debate somebody who, in my opinion, knows nothing about the situation in Palestine."
"President Carter said he wrote the book because he wanted to encourage more debate; then why won't he debate?" said Dershowitz,...
Brandeis was founded in 1948 as a nonsectarian university under the sponsorship of the American Jewish community. Carter said he initially was interested in going there.
"I thought it would be a good idea to go to a campus that had a lot of Jewish students and get a lot questions," he said. But then the initial proposal evolved into a plan for a debate.

then why won't he debate?"
.
Becaus Dershowitz would make him look silly and he know it. Dershowitz would clean his clock.
In any debate, Dershowitz would turn Carter into peanut butter.
He does not want anyone questioning him.
If Alan "....knows nothing about the situation in Palestine", then they would be on equal footing for the debate.
LOL! Like Hillary Clinton, Jimmah can't stand the heat of real discussion.
The breathtaking arrogance of the leftist. Like, what insight does Jimmah have that makes his view superior?
Carter is not only an anti-semite (as is most of the left), and the worst president we've ever had, he is also a coward.
Anyone who writes anything - be it a master's dissertation, or a high school paper - or a news column - should be ready to defend it.
But then a man who breaks two hundred year protocol of a past president NEVER denigrating a sitting president - is a coward.
He even ran from a "giant" rabbit....
Come on, Jimmy, be a man - a mensch - defend what you wrote.
This is not exactly true. He loves being interviewed by the sycophantic fellow travelers in the main stream press.
So Jimmy's come out of the closet as a true "do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do" Limousine Liberal!
Jimmah' won't debate because he knows he'll get crushed...
like a peanut.
IMO, they should be asked to demonstrate the others lack of knowledge by agreeing to one debate to prove their point, after which, if they succeed, they will not be asked to debate any more.
When they refuse to prove their point, they should be asked why they have so little faith in the sanity and practicality of their own beliefs. Then just stand back and watch them self-destruct.
Da Dersh is certifiable, a lunatic. Watching open a can of whupass on Jiminy Carter is too much fun to contemplate.
"There is no need ... to debate somebody who, in my opinion, knows nothing about the situation in Palestine."
"Joos don't know nothin'."
"...then why won't he debate?"
-----
Because Carter, like most utopian leftists, are lying hypocrites in their faux reality and he would AGAIN be exposed. If it were not for the media, Carter would be in a rest home where his sick, anti-American mind belongs.
Jimmah' wanted questions only from students, who might not be as willing to put him on the spot...
Too bad the "superior intellect" of Carter won't use this opportunity to teach the world. Liberal idiots such as Carter won't debate because their ideas can't stand up to the slightest scrutiny so they have to force them on people without questions being asked. This is why liberals must have their activist judges - because they can't get their socialist/communist ideas implemented by discussion and vote.
Now if it were a conservative who canceled their debate appearance the MSM would make it front page news, mocking him. I won't hold my breath on this news item.
"I don't want to have a conversation even indirectly with Dershowitz," Carter said in Friday's Boston Globe.
"There is no need ... to debate somebody who, in my opinion, knows nothing about the situation in Palestine."
Carter is a COWARD
Carter said the PROFESSOR knows NOTHING about the situation...
The FIRST and FOREMOST trait of a true liberal is ARROGANCE. Carter abounds in arrogance.
Because he's a chickens**t.
"He's not a fawning sycophant like the media, and he'll hold me to account for my anti-semitic views, as well as my logical fallacies. Without THOSE, I can't build a case."
"There is no need ... to debate somebody who, in my opinion, knows nothing about the situation in Palestine."
I know. But Dershowitz is willing to debate you anyway.

Kerry's disease must be contagius. Now Carter is saying, "I was for the debate before I was against the debate".
Carter's press secretary Jody Powell: "What was obvious, however, was that this large, wet animal, making strange hissing noises and gnashing its teeth, was intent upon climbing into the Presidential boat."

A rabbit with rabies might behave like that. I wonder how many people here would want to share their boat with a rabid rabbit for a while?
As for Carter the "world peace maker", Jimmie is definitely a "legend in is own mind", and avoiding Dershowitz indicates a slight connection with reality as well as a desire to preserve the illusion a little longer that he might have something useful to say on the subject.
Dershowitz should have the debate with an empty chair, with some good reader behind a curtain reading portions from JC's book, which could them be publically ripped to shreds as he could do if JC were there in the flesh.
It would be good theater. I think that approach has been used with some success in the past by challengers to an office holder who tries to duck debates. This would be a great time to give it a try.
Brave, Brave, Sir Jimmah, he Bravely ran away......
What arrogance. I disagree with Alan Dershowitz on practically everything, but to say he "knows nothing about the situation in Palestine" is just ridiculous and rude, considering that Dershowitz has written books on the issue.
But rudeness is unfortunately becoming President Carter's cardinal feature. I say that with some real sadness, because I believe President Carter to be a Christian and would like to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I agree. Please see post 35.
Maybe Jimmah' could debate Cristopher Hitchens instead...
Am I wrong,,but,,are his pants like way too short?
Seems they ought to be about 13/4 inces longer?
He is a bumpkin. And man, I wouldn't want Dersh after me for being a certifiable jew hater.
You read his book on terrorism? I would highly recommend it if not. I disagree with his politics but I think he's got his head screwed on right concerning Islam and terrorism.
Of the Carter brothers I liked Billy best.
Not to mention the bow tie is to big and his head is to small.
You know, I haven't read any of his books. I was basing my opinion on a debate he had with Alan Keyes once, his support for Clinton during impeachment and (of course) his defense of OJ.
But you're right - I should probably check out his books on terrorism. Probably I would agree with a lot of it.
Killer rabbit ! Reminds me of the movie, "Monty Python - In Search for the Holy Grail". Classic !
Billy Carter had some dealings with Omar Khaddafi in Libya.
Bob Hope had a line that "the main difference between Jimmy Carter and his brother was that Billy had a foreign policy."
chrissy wallace would be better choice no?
What Jimmy Carter is really saying is: "Don't want to be confused with facts, my peanut sized brain is already made up."
I think, I hope, we are witnessing the early stages of a total Jimmy Carter breakdown.
That has already happened years ago. Started with the Iran hostage situation in 79.
