Slowly but surely. Coal makes sense because we have more of it than any other resource. If we can use it in responsible ways then why not? I know the environment purists (nazis) don't like anything with hydrocarbons in it but until we have something better this is one way we can lessen our dependence on international oil.

In addition to being cheaper than oil, advocates point out that the fuel is environmentally friendlier and would also help America wean itself of foreign oil imports. So mining for coal is more environemtally friendly that oil drilling of the coast of FL, or drilling in ANWR? I'm sure the enviro-wackos are going to support more coal mining!

I saw the stupidest interview by an ABC bimbo over this topic. To paraphrase she looked at one of the owners of the company producing this stuff and asked him if because of the fact that the Nazis in WWII and South Africa during apartheid were forced to use this fuel would we be looked at internationally like they were? I just sat there with my mouth open, I couldn't believe she would say such a stupid thing. I still think bio-diesel from algae is a better solution because it is renewable, but if it can slap OPEC's greedy little fingers I am all for it.

They're trying to liquefy coal, and turn hydrogen into a solid (sodium borohydride). Carburetors turn gasoline into a vapor. Why can't people just be happy with the way things are?

Liquid coal?
Sounds like turkey bacon, or meatless burgers, or Fat-Free oil...or sugar-free hard candy.

What the Hell is nuclear power? Chopped liver? I'm sick and tired of these "alternative energy" articles. If they were feasible, they'd be on the market already, without being sustained by taxpayer subsidies.
Nuclear power is the most common sense energy right now for heating homes and buildings. For transportation, just drill for more oil domestically. How hard is this?

If we can use it in responsible ways then why not? Because those who currently hold the reins of the oil drilling, delivery and refining infrastructure do not yet hold the patents for the processes to refine liquid fuel from coal.
Until they do...and when oil is no longer available to be pumped from underground...we will not see cheap, clean fuels from coal.
Not too cynical am I?
