AP) Grand Forks, N.D. The University of Minnesota's athletic director said the school has not strictly enforced a 2003 policy that discourages games with teams using American Indian nicknames and mascots. But that's about to change, according to Joel Maturi, university athletic director.
Maturi said his school won't compete against the University of North Dakota in any sport except men's and women's hockey because of UND's Fighting Sioux nickname.
Maturi said the policy won't affect other schools in the University of Minnesota system, such as Crookston and Duluth.
North Dakota Athletic Director Tom Buning said Minnesota's decision won't affect the school's Division One plans, adding that it is unfortunate that student athletes won't get the chance to play Minnesota.

Macaca
Will they play the Fightin' Irish?
I guess they wouldn't play the San Francisco Flaming Faggots on Politically-Correct Grounds either, then.....
In any event, it's typical of how phoney these PC types are.
Expect another fantastic letter from the President of UND to the U of M...
I bet a dollar that the tribe wasn't offended by the nickname.
Beside It is North Dakota. Dakota is a Sioux. What? Next they are going to make them change the name of their state?
WHAT A GREAT TERM... MACACA...
Maturi is far more of a clown than that. Hockey is also the only sport that puts both teams in the same league. If Minnesota refused to play we would be looking at frequent forfeits. Look at all those points lost in the ranking game.
They should play the University of Northern Colorado Junior Varsity basketball team.
The fighting Sioux need to tell this pansy ass to shove it up his pansy ass.
The Fighting Oglala or Dakota, anything but Sioux!
With apologies to J. Cash
the team logo was even created by a local Sioux.
What exactly is offensive about "Fighting Sioux"? Would they prefer "Appeasing Sioux"? "Crying Sioux When Pushed by White Man"?
*snort* They should just offer to change it to the Fighting Dakotas and see what happens. I doubt Maturi is knowledgeable enough to get the joke. :)
Are they going to play University of Alabama? Alabama was also the name of an Indian tribe.
I guess the NYU Homos are off the schedule too.

the Sioux Study Group ?
u of m....the biggest bunch of pc a-holes...in the big twelve!!!
The Indians would probably Scalp them anyway!
Pray for W and Our Troops
My name is Sioux! How do you do!
Now you're gonna die!!
You know, with a little re-wording that song would make a great fight song.
lol!
Go to basement and get Fighting Sioux cap off display rack. Wear to work the rest of week as well as several more trips out for last minute Christ-mas shopping!
How 'bout those Tar Heel Skaters ?
I think the UND team should Sioux the U of M . . . . . .
I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, HATE PC!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was the Sioux tribe in North Dakota that got UND to change it's name to the Fighting Sioux in the first place. Prior to that UND was know as the "Flickertails". The tribe thought it would be good public relations. The tribe still supports the Fighting Sioux nickname.
Does this mean U of M 'yellow gophers' won't be playing the U of I FIGHTIN' ILLINI anymore? If not, GOOD FREAKIN' RIDDANCE!
This PC crapolla really blows!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
So does this mean that Minnesota will not play the Fighting Illini of the University of Illinois? Seems like they are both in the Big Ten (Eleven).
oops! you beat me to it!
Great minds think alike....like screw U of M AND the ncaa!
My wife has a cousin with a boy who plays baseball for UM and every spring they come down here and spend a weekend playing against the West Georgia "Braves".
That was North Dakota State that should have beaten Minnesota this year.
This whole thing is bogus anyhow as UND is a DivII school that is in process of moving to DivI. The only sport UND is DivI is ice hockey.
What about "The Fightin' Yiddish" of Yeshiva University?
When are they going to change the name of the University of Minnesota (Land of Lakes) from its Indian origins? It's demeaning to the Indian language to use it in the name of a state university.
I don't think the Sioux warriors had Title Nine women's bow and arrow training programs either.
