No Time for Soldiers

Out of the French army's soul-destroying trial by fire in Algeria there has so far emerged one superlatively good combat commander, a 42-year-old ex-bank clerk from Toul named Marcel Bigeard (TIME. April 28). So notable is Colonel Bigeard's tactical genius and so successful his Spartan training methods that for three years, whenever French troops scored one of their rare clearcut victories over the Algerian rebels, French newspaper readers automatically looked for the name of his 3rd Colonial Paratroop Regiment. Last week, to their confusion, Frenchmen learned that there was no longer any place in Algeria for Marcel Bigeard.

At the root of Bigeard's troubles lay the publicity that his military triumphs had won for him. Had the tall, sinewy colonel been a graduate of St. Cyr (France's West Point), his superiors might have put up with him. But they begrudged such acclaim to a "jumped-up ranker" who perennially poked fun at "generals with middle-aged spread.''

Noncom's War. Last April, Bigeard's enemies succeeded in getting him assigned to command a special school designed to train junior officers in "revolutionary warfare." Unlike many other paratroop officers, he stood aloof from the army coup of last May, earned the further dislike of the balcony generals and colonels of Algiers by scornfully condemning their coup ("The army, instead of waging war, is indulging in politics").

Yes, this story is almost fifty years old, but why does this Colonel Bigeard remind me of LTC Allen B. West, an Infantry Battalion Commander, who was relieved of his command for talking mean to a captured Iraqi terrorist during his interrogation and firing his pistol to frighten the terrorist? Then, in the paper today there was an announcement that eight Marines were being charged with murder for simply following their training and returning fire on terrorists in Haditha, Iraq. Can you imagine how demoralizing this must be to our troops in Iraq? The truth of the matter is the leadership of our country has become just like France’s; too civilized and too effete to deal effectively with any threat to our nation's well being whether it is in the Middle East or along our borders. Could it be we are now coming to the same level of national insignificance France reached fifty years ago? More on Colonel Bigeard at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcel_Bigeard

Our military handicapped by political correctness.
Our soldiers charged with murder fo doing their jobs.
Our Border patrol agents having to seek a pardon after shooting a smuggler.

Our Senators traveling to Syria seeking to surrender to the Islamics.

Our Speaker of the House is having a 4 day Inaugural.

Sandy Burglar walks while Libby is prosecuted in a case that has no resemblance to the investigation for which he was questioned.

And who is responsible for this nonsense? I find it so hard to comprehend and understand.

"And who is responsible for this nonsense?"

I think uninformed voters just might have something to do with it.

Many things are responsible, but mainly liberals.

They hate the war so they go after our military
They want the Hispanic vote so they go after the Border Patrol.
Liberal Senators like Kerry actually believe they are relevant
Sphincter is just plain STUPID
Pelosi is having an ego trip
Sandy Burglar was protected by the Clinton cobal.

I dont see Republicans as totally innocent either. As for illegal immigration, the President is as guilty as anyone.
Also if he doesnt do anything to stop these Senators from carrying out their own foreign policy he bears responsibility for some of that.
Hopefuly before leaving office he will pardon the soldiers from Haditha,The President cant do much about that now that the process is started ,but he can pardon them before leaving office. As for Sandy Burglar, President Bush came into office and refused to prosecute Bubba or anyone in the Clinton administration and has turned the other way on any prosecution of any part of them. Obviously Burglar cut a deal.

Thanks for the summation. I guess I really knew about the varied corruptions and lack of performance to protect our assets - just to hard to believe and comprehend. I wholeheartedly agree that President Bush should pardon the Marines and border patrol agents.

"I think uninformed voters just might have something to do with it."

"Uninformed" being your polite way of saying
"Dumb as cardboard."

LOL!
